Ira M. Hurt Marries Helm Sisters

Ira M. Hurt, born April 02, 1830 and often referred to in legal documents as "Ira Hurt, Jr." married twice into the Thomas Helm, Sr. family of Franklin County.  Thomas Helm, Sr., born January 11, 1773, was, perhaps, the wealthiest landowner in Franklin County of his time.  Thomas was married four times and was the father of 13 children.  He and his fourth wife, Sarah Lemon, had two daughters: Elizabeth Ellen and Lavinia Jane Helms.   Thomas Helm died in 1854 and is buried in the Helm Cemetery on Rt. 642 in Callaway.

Elizabeth Ellen Helms Lemon

On October 23, 1855, Ira M. Hurt married Elizabeth Ellen Helms Lemon, the youngest of the two children born to Thomas Helms and Sarah Lemon.  Elizabeth was born August 29, 1834  and was married to Sparriel Lemon prior to her marriage to Ira M. Hurt.  Ira M. and Elizabeth had one son prior to her death on November 08, 1857 in Franklin County, Virginia.  At her death, Elizabeth Ellen Hurt was 23 years, 2 months, 11 days.   It is possible her death was due to complications during childbirth.

Child of Ira M. Hurt and Elizabeth Ellen Helms is:

i. THOMAS I. HURT, b. 1857, Lived about 5 months.

Lavinia "Vina" Helms' first marriage was to Lewis Burwell Harvey.  They had two children before her husband's death.
