Mr H Russell, solicitor, appeared in support of the summons, and explained that complainant and defendant were members of Shenstone Cricket Club, defendant being captain, and complainant a member of the committee. On Monday evening there was a meeting of the club, at the National Schools, Shenstone, and the question of making arrangements for future matches was gone into. In the course of discussion, complainant had occasion to seriously remonstrate with Captain Tetley as to the way in which previous matches had been arranged. Defendant instead of giving a civil explanation, at once jumped up and struck complainant a violent blow in the left eye, following it up with three or four blows on the head and elsewhere. Complainant gave evidence bearing out this statement and said he and defendant called each other liars before any blow was struck. Defendant admitted striking complainant but said Hawkins had accused him of influencing a member, and twice called him a liar. The magistrate expressed an opinion that it was a gross assault, and fined defendant 5pds including costs. |

Note* | Joan Hall (nee Serman), William's youngest grandchild, has his diary for 1877- 1878 when he drove cattle from Blackall to “Rocklands” He would have met the Noyes through introductions from his mother’s family, the Ryders. In 1878 he mentions coming south by ship from Rockhampton and “camping” in South Yarra with Arthur Noyes. He bought a property at Kergunyah, (still known as Tetley’s paddock on the parish plan) north east of Wangaratta in Victoria and married Kate Noyes. Francis (Frank) was the first born and unfortunately was born 9/10ths blind, probably from German measles. These and other difficulties caused them to move to the more settled area of Stratford in eastern Victoria where they were for ten years. Doris Serman, the youngest of their six children, was born in Melbourne as the family was moving to Keewong, west of Cobar. This was a larger property owned by a consortium which William Tetley acted as part owner and manager. This was the time of property devaluation in Australia when many people lost fortunes and was a very difficult time. The family was there for ten years suffering droughts for the final seven years and left in their horse drawn wagons in floods! They moved to Frankston, Victoria to farm for ten years and then to Berwick for a final 10 years. William retired to 100 Warrigul Rd Surrey Hills in the very early 1920s where he died. Frank retired to a cottage on Olivers Hill, Frankston. He was able to manage his disability in a remarkable fashion using public transport. For example, he kept the eucalypts coppiced at Surrey hills where they formed a back-drop to the garden and built a high paling fence around the property. Their second son, Wilfred, returned from the first World War to farm near Wangaratta Their third son, Norman. was killed at Lone Pine, Gallipolli in 1915. Before the war he farmed on King Island The eldest daughter E.M. (Madge) married Oswald Gibson. son of a pioneering pastoral family in Queensland and had a daughter and son, Jim Gibson who farms near Strathbogie, Victoria Their youngest daughter, Doris married Eric Richard Francis Serman and lived in Melbourne, while Florence did not marry.2 |

Event-Misc* | 7 March 1906 | He wasa bankrupt in 1906. Sittings in Bankruptcy before Mr Registrar Linklater This was an application for an order of discharge by Mr Maxwell Tetley, against whom a receiving order was made on September 21, 1895, the debtor being then described as of an address at Henley on Thames. The liabilities were estimated at 5,073pds 11s 10d, and it was stated that a dividend of not less than 4s inthe pound would be paid to creditors. It appeared from the evidence that the bankrupt had no occupation, and when he attained his majority on October 30, 1894, he became entitled to receive a sum of about 12,000pds and to a reversion under the will of his late father. Thereupon the suggestion of his solicitor and under the advice of counsel, he executed a settlement of his interests under his father's will, excluding a sum of 3,500pds which was reserved to pay existing debts. The bankrupt took a life interest under the settlement, determinable on alienation, and certain relations of the bankrupt covenanted to pay him 100pds a year. He failed to live within his income, which did not exceed 300pds a year, and about February 1895, charged his interest under the settlement to a creditor. Thereupon the trustees of the settlement ceased to pay the income of the settled funds to the bankrupt, and acting under their discretionary powers, paid it to the bankrupt's wife. Bankruptcy proceedings ensued, and the bankrupt attributed his failure to his having executed the settlement of October 30, 1894. The trustee in bankruptcy moved to upset the settlement, but the Courts declined to do so. The bankrupt stated that he executed the settlement simply to defraud the creditors; but it was clear to the Official Receiver that the bankrupt was desirous of upsetting the settlement, and his statements appeared to have been made with that object in view. In these circumstances the Official Receiver discredited the bankrupt's statements regarding the settlement, and did not report that the bankrupt had been guilty of any misconduct in executing it. In the opinion of the Official Receiver the bankuptcy was caused by extravagence in living. Mr Registrat Linklater granted the discharge subject to the bankrupt's consenting to judgement for 50pds. on 7 March 1906.2 |

Death* | 15 February 1935 | Richard Tetley died on 15 February 1935 at age 80.1 |
Obituary | 18 December 1936 | By the death of Richard Tetley Glazebrook, at the age of eighty-two years, we lose one of the most active and efficient science workers and organisers of his generation. Glazebrook began his scientific career under Clerk Maxwell and the late Lord Rayleigh at the Cavendish Laboratory. His first investigations were on double refraction. In the early eighties he became interested in the absolute determination of the electrical units, which continued to occupy him up to the very end of his life. He was for a time senior bursar of Trinity and then principal of Liverpool University, but on the establishment of the National Physical Laboratory in 1899, Glazebrook was appointed the first director, and the present prosperity and national importance of that institution are more due to him than to any other single man. It remains as an abiding monument of his life's work. His retirement in 1919 by no means marked the close of his activities. As chairman of the Aeronautical Research Committee and of the Executive Committee of the laboratory, he was still able to do much to promote the work to which he had devoted his best years. He was elected to the society as early as 1882, and received the Hughes Medal in 1909 and the Royal Medal in 1931. He was created K.C.B. in 1920, and received numerous other honours. The debt which the country owes to him in the development of aeronautics is very great.3 |

Note | The eldest of Francis William's six surviving sons, Charles Francis Tetley (1848–1934), was born at Foxhill, Weetwood, near Leeds, on 24 October 1848. Unlike his father and grandfather, about whose education no details are known, he and two of his brothers (who went on to be employed in the firm as company secretary and head brewer respectively) attended Leeds grammar school and Harrow. In 1868 he went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1872 with honours in the classical tripos. After spending a year learning the trade at two southern breweries he joined the Tetley firm in 1873. On 2 June 1875 he married Alice Margaret (b. 1852/3), daughter of John William Atkinson, a Leeds solicitor; they had three sons and a daughter. Charles Francis Tetley was made a partner in the brewery in 1877, and became chairman of the incorporated company in 1902. He was the first member of the business to play a significant part in Leeds politics, being elected to Leeds city council as a Conservative in 1895 and serving as lord mayor two years afterwards. In 1926 he was made a freeman of the city. He was prominent, as were later members of the Tetley family, in many aspects of the city's life, especially its fledgeling university. For fifty years a member of its governing body, he made benefactions to the University of Leeds, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1922. He was also for fifty years a churchwarden of St Michael's, Headingley. He died at Foxhill on 25 January 1934 and was buried at Lawnswood cemetery.8 |
