Franklin Dickens "joined the army (Co. C., 24th VA) May 24, 1861 as an original member of the company. He was with the company during nearly all of the hard campaigning in 1862 and took part in the invasion of Pennsylvania in the summer of 1863. He was captured on July 5, 1863 as the army retreated from Gettysburg. He was imprisoned at Fort Delaware and held there until the end of the war when he took the oath of allegiance and was released on May 11, 1865." (from the Civil War writings of John Perry Alderman)

James M. Dickens joined Co. C., 24th VA "March 13, 1862 at Hillsville.... He was sent to the hospital sick on May 8, 1862 and the company never saw him again. There is a tradition in the family that he survived the war and was seen afterwards, but the archives flatly state that he died in May 1862 in Richmond of the fever."
