On Sunday morning April 12, 1993, my father died in Chester, Virginia. He had been living with us for the last 7 years of his life. Unfortunately, we did not talk much about family while he was still living.
As a small boy growing up in Wellington, Kansas, a small mid-western town, I can recall my father talking about his mother, brothers and other relatives in Kentucky.
In the summer of 1948, I was about 15 years old, our family took a trip to Barbourville, Kentucky. This was my first time meeting some of my relatives in Kentucky. I never visited Barbourville, Kentucky again until approximately 31 years later. On a summer trip to Kansas in 1977, my son and I on our way back to Virginia stopped in Barbourville, Kentucky to visit my Aunt Vera Jones Clark.
Although the death of my father was not a pleasant experience, we did gain some insight and knowledge about my family. We received cards, letters, telegrams, and phone calls from a number of people I did not know. To our surprise these were sympathy cards and letters from my relatives.
From that point on, I became obsessed with searching my family background and history. Beginning in 1996 and every subsequent year, we have traveled to Manchester, Kentucky to the Annual Homecoming to find our “roots” on my father’s side of the family.
This has been a successful adventure because thus far I have been able to trace my “roots” back to my great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmothers.
On my mother’s side of the family, I have traced my “roots” back to my great-grandfather and great-grandmother.
This experience is only the beginning of my family “roots” and I sincerely hope my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will appreciate the time and effort that has been spent in researching and compiling this family's history so far. Further, it is my desire that someone else will pick up the mantle and carry on after I am no longer capable of doing research or have passed on.
