...Connecting the Dots...

Johns Family
of  West Putford, Devon, England

nn      nnnnnnnnnn

This page focuses on the descendants of Richard (1805-1867) and Elizabeth Walter Johns (1809-1896)
of West Putford, Devon, England.

All of their fourteen children survived to adulthood, and many lived into their 80's or beyond.
Five of their children: Grace, Richard, Ann, Mary and James emigrated to Canada or the U.S., as well as children of Thomas, Walter William, Susan and Daniel. Their son John Johns, b. 1836, emigrated to New Zealand.  According to Clive Johns (see below), James Johns offered to pay passage for any of his nieces or nephews who wished to emigrate to Canada.  At least five took him up on the offer.

It is clear that the descendants of Richard and Elizabeth Johns number in the thousands. It is hoped that the information gathered here will be of interest to them. My grandmother, Annie Grace Pickard Moore, was one of the 91 grandchildren of Richard and Elizabeth. She grew up in Ontario, and never met her Johns grandparents, or the aunts, uncles and cousins who remained in England.  This page is an effort to gather all the Johns family together in the same place, and is dedicated to Grandma Moore.

Although I have tried to document and verify all information here, there may be errors or omissions.
Please contact me with any additions or corrections.  JMS

Letter from Clive Johns

Alton Clive Johns (1893-1985) was the son of John Johns and Martha Henwood of Auckland, New Zealand.
During WWI, Clive enjoyed a brief visit with Johns family members while on leave in England.
The letter is full of details about the Johns relatives in Devon and Cornwall who Clive was meeting for the first time.
