THE TRIAL of William WINDLEY

[ Allen and Muriel Findlay visited the Public Records Office in Chancery Lane, London on the 28th October 1984 and found the original parchment record of William's trial and copied the details by hand.]

In Assi 35 / 258 - Essex Assizes.

INDICTMENT.

ESSEX. The jurors for our Lord the King upon their oath present that William Windley late of the Parish of Great Baddow in the County of Essex, labourer, on the 10th day of October in the 57th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith with Force and Arms at the Parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid one shawl of the value of 3 shillings, one handkerchief of the value of 2 shillings and one pair of stockings of the value of sixpence of the goods and chattels of Samuel Baker then, and there being found feloniously did steal, take and carry away against the Peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity.

The jurors for our Lord the King upon their oath present that William Windley late of the Parish of Chelmsford in the County of Essex, labourer, on the 12th day of October in the 57th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith with Force and Arms at the Parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid one sheet of the value of 2 shillings, one shirt of the value of 2 shillings, one handkerchief of the value of 2 shillings and 2 waistcoats of the value of 2 shillings of the goods and chattels of William Wiffen the same goods and chattels being in a certain lodging room in the dwelling of the said William Wiffen there situate let by contract by the said William Wiffen to the said William Windley with the lodging aforesaid then and there being found, feloniously did steal, take and carry away against the form of the statute in such case made and provided and against the Peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity.

Puts himself. Jury say guilty. To be transported beyond the seas for the Term of his Natural life to such place etc. pursuant etc.

ESSEX. The Jurors for our Lord the King upon their oath present that William Windley late of the Parish of Roxwell in the County of Essex, labourer, on the 12th day of October in the 57th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith with Force and Arms at the Parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid from the person of George Doe then and there feloniously did steal, take and carry away one handkerchief of the value of 1 shilling, one smock frock of the value of 10 shillings, one silver watch of the value of 20 shillings and 9 shillings in monies numbered of the goods, chattels and monies of the said George Doe and one bank note for the payment and value of one pound the said note for payment of money at the time of committing the felony aforesaid being the property of the said George Doe and the sum of money payable and secured by and upon the said note for the payment of money then to wit at the time of committing the felony aforesaid due and unsatisfied to the said George Doe the proprietor thereof against the form of the statute in such case made and provided and against the Peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity.
