FAMILY BIBLE

The Family Bible of John & Hannah (Robbins) Dickson contained a number of starting points for research, since it recorded (among others) the following events:
Marriages of John Dickson, Sr. and his children's births/marriages
Births of all of the children of Nathaniel Robbins and Ruth Vanroom:  Theodosia, Vanroom, Ann, Abel, Nathaniel Jr., Susannah, Obediah, Job and Ruth
Deaths of Vanroom (27feb1804) and Ruth (26feb1853)
Births of all of the children of Vanroom Robbins and Tabitha Ford:  William, Ruth, Lydia, Sarah, Patience, Hannah, Mary, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Ann and Vanroom Jr.
Death of Hannah Robbins Dickson

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS
The State of New Jersey does not maintain records prior to 1848.

HISTORICAL SOCIETIES
Chesterfield Township Historical Society, Crosswicks, NJ:  Gertrude N. Brick wrote to Wm. D. Johnson, Jr. on 16oct1985 with a good deal of information on Daniel Robbins, Sr. and his descendants  based on the records from the state of New Jersey Archives.  Subsequently, I believe that William visited the Society and gave some memorabilia to it.
Brooklyn Historical Society, Brooklyn Heights, NY:  Among the exciting finds was a 7-volume set on the founding and history of Woodbridge, New Jersey which filled in quite a few details for that period of Daniel Robbins life.  Rand and Sharon Johnson visited this Society on a number of occasions.
Historical Society of New Jersey:  Wm. D. Johnson Jr. corresponded with D. Stratford who sent a photocopy of the relevant pages from the work edited by F. B. Lee (see footnotes).

LIBRARIES
New Jersey State Library Archives:  Wm. D. Johnson Jr. found copies of the wills of both Nathaniel and Vanroom Robbins.
Perkins Library, Duke University, Raleigh, NC:  While Rand and Sharon Johnson were visiting Rand's father during his hospital stay at Duke University, we took the time to do some research--it proved more valuable with regard to the Hawkins line rather than the Robbins line except by negative inference.
New York Public Library:  Visited by Rand and Sharon in June, 1998; some additional dates were found.

CEMETERIES
Crosswicks Methodist Cemetery, Crosswicks, NJ:  Six of the children of Vanroom Robbins Sr. and Tabitha Ford are buried here, as is Tabitha (age 60y9m15d):  Ann, Elizabeth, William, Ruth, Sarah and Lydia.  There are also a Judith Robbins and a Jane Robbins but the relationship to Vanroom's family is unknown.
(Wm. D. Johnson, Jr. visited this cemetery on 11sep1985)
Robbins Cemetery, Clarksburg, NJ off Rte. 524:  only recognizable grave with the name Robbins/Robins was for Zachariah Robbins who died in 1749.  This is the son of Moses Robins who is the son of Daniel Robbins, Sr.  This cemetery is located on land once owned by Moses.
(On 1feb1986, Rand, Sharon, Tim and Rhonda accompanied Wm. D. Johnson Jr. to Clarksburg NJ to visit the Robbins Cemetery and Tim and his father made a seond trip on 22feb1986)
Clarksburg Cemetery was visited by Tim Johnson on November 24, 1985, but no Robbins/Robins were found.

MISCELLANEOUS
On February 14, 1986, Tim and Rhonda Johnson accompanied Wm. D. Johnson, Jr. on a visit to the Robin's Meeting House.

SOURCES
(consulted when seeking information about Daniel Robbins, Sr. before his arrival in Woodbridge, NJ)

The following sources were consulted at the Perkins Library, Duke University, and there was no reference to Robins or Robbins pre-1700 with the exception of the Plymouth Colony:
For Massachusetts:
History of Newbury, Massachusetts, John James Currier (974.45 C976H)
Ould Newbury, John James Currier (974.45 C675)
A Sketch of the History of Newbury, Joshua Coffin (974.45 C675)
History of Haverhill, Bittinger
Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth, Davis (974.48 D265A)-- lists Richard Robbins in 1639 as having moved from Charlestown, MA but subsequent research suggests he is not one of Daniel's antecedents.
The following were consulted at the Long Island Historical Society in January 1986 and although Robbins were found, they do not appear to link to our Daniel:
Genealogical Record of James and Benjamin Robbins of Nova Scotia, The Yarmouth Herald, VOL XLV No. 10, Oct 12 1897:  James and Benjamin are the great, great grandsons of Nicholas Robbins, possibly from the Channel Islands, who was a landholder in Cambridge MA in 1635 and removed to Duxbury, MA in 1638; no sons named Daniel occur before the 1800's.
