In 1846, when the settlement of her father's estate began, Matilda C. Carter, wife of James Carter, was living in Tennessee. By the time, the widow Elizabeth, petitioned for her dower (undated but likely in 1847), Matilda had departed this life leaving children which are never named in the estate file.

His father was James Carter, his mother Martha Babb, both born in VA. Miss Jimmie Carter of Paris was the informant. Buried Carter Cemetery, Henry County on June 28th.
