Censuses indicate Archibald was born between 1770 and 1780,

The following may be this Archer witnessing a deed of his father's. If so he had to be at least age 14 or born by 1778. Could also be his uncle of the same name, particularly given the location on the upper Double Creek and the neighbors named.

Archer Walters married Catey Stamps on 16 Oct 1798. The bondsman was William Walters. John Stamps, her father, gave permission. John Atkinson was the minister.

The witness of this deed may be his uncle Archer, since it is on the upper double creeks and includes Samuel Walker & William Walker who would have been a brother-in-law and brother to the uncle.

This deed is also likely the uncle's since he is known to have been in Caswell Co about this time. The younger Archibald did not move to Caswell until about 1832. However Jackson Walters was young Archibald's brother.

Survey: Plat represents tract of land belonging to the estate of Archibald Walters deceased, containing 345.9 acres on which 166 acres was laid off and assigned to the widow Elizabeth Walters and bounded as specified in the report of the Jury annexed. Surveyed June 17, 1847. Henry Bushnell, CCS.
Boundaries shown do not give neighbors. One is "Down the river" and shows 25.38 poles bordering a river. Moon's Crrek is one of the boundaries, as it empties into the River. There is also a boundary to the road and "with the road", which is probably the Mill Road.

ARCHIBALD "Archer" WALTERS and CATHERINE "Catey" STAMPS were married on 16 October 1798 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.^1,32 CATHERINE "Catey" STAMPS, daughter of JOHN STAMPS and ELEANOR DODSON, was born about 1778 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.¹ She died in July 1839 at the age of 61.

Archer married Elizabeth Richardson Rice 2 Jul 1840.

ARCHIBALD "Archer" WALTERS and CATHERINE "Catey" STAMPS had the following children:

ARCHIBALD "Archer" WALTERS and Elizabeth RICHARDSON were married on 2 July 1840 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.¹¹¹ Elizabeth RICHARDSON¹¹², daughter of ?Robert RICHARDSON and Frances HARRISON, was born in 1785.

Elizabeth was first married to James Rice, 20 Dec 1824.
Frances Richardson, mother, gave permission for the marriage of Elizabeth and James Rice. Charles Lucas was bondsman. William Blair was the minister.
Elizabeth's age as 65 in 1850, indicates she was born circa 1785. Why would she need her mother's permission to marry? In 1860, she said she was age 70, but whichever is correct makes her considerably older than 21. It is also said she signed for herself.

Edmund Richardson is seen as Elizabeth's father, but unless there were two Edmund Richardson's that is incorrect. Edmund Richardson was the father of Ann Eliza Payne Richardson who married Azariah Graves Walters, a son of Archibald, as his first wife. I have not yet discovered who was Elizabeth's father and Frances's husband.

Confusion abounds surrounding the ladies Elizabeth and many errors are found online concerning the following three relationships.
1. This Elizabeth Richardson Rice, was the 2nd wife of Archibald Walters. Bondsman: Robert J. Richardson. Witness: J. Holderby. The date was 2 Jul 1840, Rockingham Co, NC. Her mother was the widow Frances Richardson; her first husband, James Rice.

2. An Elizabeth Richards [not Richardson] was the first wife of Archibald's uncle whose name was also Archibald Walters. As a much younger brother of Archibald's father, the uncle was likely only a few years older than his nephew and namesake. The marriage of the slightly older Archibald and Elizabeth Richards took place 23 Jan 1788 in Pittsylvania Co VA. Elizabeth was the daughter of Gabriel Richards and Mary Durrett. She died about four years after the marriage and Uncle Archibald married Edy Slayden, 18 Mar 1793. This family went to Tennessee circa 1810.

3. Ann Eliza [sometimes seen as Elizabeth] Payne Richardson married Archibald's son Azariah as above. They were married about 1832 - no marriage record has been found. Her parents were Edmund Richardson and Mary Dillard "Polly" Harrison. There is likely a relationship between Ann Eliza Payne Richardson and Elizabeth Richardson, but it is unknown at this time.

Robert Richardson was a soldier and received land warrants for three
years' service in the Revolution.

Provided it is accurate, that lineage does certainly suggest that Elizabeth Richardson Rice who married Archibald Walters in his old age, 2 Jul 1840, Rockingham, was a sister to Edmund Richardson [therefore an aunt of Ann Eliza Payne Richardson Walters] and provides a name for the husband of the widow Frances Richardson who gave permission for Elizabeth to marry James Rice.

I did go to the DAR site and Kate Holland Judkins is the only applicant listed for Robert Richardson ....and there is a warning note "FUTURE APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE ". There apparently is not a complete proof of lineage to Robert Richardson now on file. This is somewhat different from the warning often seen as "Future Applicants Must Prove Correct Service".

Kate also applied under Robert Walters & John Stamps, both lines still acceptable.

1850 Census. Elizabeth Walters lived in Yanceyville in Caswell Co NC. Age 65. Value of Real Estate is $1666. Living with her is Iverson B. Carter age 24, born VA, and Susan Carter age 24, born in Caswell, and John, age 2. Also Mary Walters age 4, born in VA. [Mary is a step-grandchild, one of the orphaned daughters of Archibald's son Alexander; her sister Nancy, age 7, was living with her uncle Azariah Graves Walters in 1850. This would seem to guarantee this is indeed Archibald Walters' sidow.]

North Carolina Marriage Bonds show a marriage from Susan Gatewood to Iverson B. Carter on 27 Nov 1847 in Caswell Co. Next household to Elizabeth Walters is Rebecka Gatewood, age 75. I suspect there is some relationship between Elizabeth and the Gatewoods, but have no idea what it might be.

Later research shows that the relationship implied in this census is more likely to Iverson B. Carter who is believed to have been the grandson of Presley Carter and Anne Waddill. Presley's brother Charles Ewell Carter was married to Kesiah Walters, daughter of John who was a son of Thomas & Lucy Walters. Anne Waddill's nephew Noel had also married Selethia Walters, a daughter of Robert, and a granddaughter of Thomas & Lucy Walters. These families all well acquainted. Rebecka Gatewood, age 75, living next door was the step-grandmother of Susan Gatewood Carter.

There is an E. Walters, 70 year old female, b. VA, in Caswell in 1860. Living with her was Thomas Turner, age 33.
Probably this is Elizabeth. I have no information about her death.
The household just previous was I. B. Walters, age 40, b. NC, a single man. I'm sure this would be Archibald's son and Elizabeth's stepson, Iverson - he did not marry until 1861.
