Notes for William Snelling:

"In April of 1777, William Snelling was drafted for a period of fix months into the militia under the command of Captain Davis.  In his pension application, William states that the company was marched to Leesburg, and that he and all of the company was hospitalized with small pox.  At the expiration of his enlistment, he was discharged and returned home to Fauquier Co., VA.  He was again drafted into the militia in April of 1779, into a company commanded by Captain Augustine Smith for a period of 9 months.  The company was sent to the Albanan Barracks to guard British prisoners and did so until Cornwallis arrived with his army.  On the appearance of Cornwallis' army, they left the Barracks and were reconnoitering the county while being pursued by the enemy for some three or four weeks.  They fell in with General Washington's army about sixty miles from Albanan Barracks and then attached to a Regiment commanded by General Lafayette and Major Buchanan.  The enemy retreated towards York.  A few days after Cornwallis surrendered to Gen. Washington, the company marched the British prisoners to Winchester, VA and William remained there some time.  He was discharged in the fall of the year of 1779, and returned to Fauquier Co., VA"  - Source page 111,  "The Snelling Family by Jeanne B. 1) I cannot re-locate source of this document on the internet. I originally used it to avoid re-typing what had already been typed. I subsequently have added to it (links and text) and removed all below my direct ancestors to prevent information on living persons from showing. It is possible originator pulled from internet (or changed format so I cannot locate and now credit appropriately) for similar reasons.

2) Much of the hyperlinked information above comes from the Library of Virginia website or the Library collection, itself, in Richmond Virginia. The Fauquier County collection is very good.
