When his estat e was later probated in Richmond County in 1704, the Inventory listed certain a ssets "from across the River." This meant south of the Rappahannock River, whic h was in an area where Thomas Hanks had owned property. It seems evidence of so me connection.
Resided near the corner where Richmond, Lancaster, and Northc umberland Counties, Virginia meet. There is no record in the Grantee book of th e first land that he owned; it is probable he inherited by primogeniture.
Wi lliam I was known as the "Carpenter". He farmed, coopered, and was in business. He prospered and added farm lands to his holdings. At his death there was quite an estate; divided into four equal parts; one for the widow, Sarah, who had ma rried Richard White; and the balance to his three sons. There is no record of d aughters.
White was a widower and probably had a complete household for he r eceived non of the cooking utensils, which it would seem the former widow would have wanted! The son, William II received, among other articles, the carpenter and the cooper tools, of which more later. Luke I received two looking glasses and a case of pistols. John got much cloth, including 'penniston', a coarse su iting used by foresters. He also got a set of wedges. Obviously the latter twob rothers were woodsmen and felled the trees and their elder brother worked them up into lumber and houses.
Incidentally, the widow Sarah did not have her se cond husband long. He died in 1708. Then the youngest Hanks son, Joh, had a gua rdian appointed for him. Parents: Thomas HANKS III and Elizabeth LEE.
