THE LIFE OF CURTIS JETT
(Taken from "Pioneers of Eastern Kentucky, Their Feuds and Settlements" By Bernice Calmes Caudill, Copyright 1969

Curt Jett was born in Jackson, Kentucky, on December 19, 1875. His ancestors were Virginians and his great-grandfather on the paternal side was a Bryant, relative to the wife of Daniel Boone. Curt was the son of Hiram and Sis (Sewell) Jett. Mrs. Jett was the half-sister to Judge James and Alex Hargis, and Mr. Jett was a brother of Tom and Jim Cockrell's mother.

When Curt's parents were first married, they lived in a typical mountain home near Jackson. They were considered good law-abiding people, and the father was always able to take care of himself and his family.

From the time Curt could remember, there had been feuds in and around his community. His father once had a fight with a man, and was wounded while the broker of Hiram Jett was killed. Curt said that after dark, everyone locked their doors.

Mr. and Mrs. Jett decided to leave Breathitt County in the year 1877. They and their small children rode horseback, going by the way of Beattyville, Kentucky to Madison County, where they finally settled at a small village named Daysville.

After Curt learned to write, he began taking notes on the feuds from conversations he would hear, and he soon built up a resentment in his mind. Once his mother received a letter from her home, telling her that her brother, Willie Sewell, had been ambushed while making cane molasses and fell in a vat of boiling residue. This made the young Curt very angry.

There was a nearby neighbor of his parents, whom he admired, and through his influence Curt took up drinking which soon became habitual. He learned to shoot a rifle at an early age, and was considered an expert marksman. He could shoot a quail on the wing, and kill a squirrel from the top of the tallest trees.

Curt and his mother sometimes went back to Jackson to visit relatives, where he would hear about the feuds between his family and their enemies. He compared these mountain leaders with the old "Scottish Chieftains," who gathered their clans about them and fought their misunderstandings out to the finish.

Curt liked to relate the incidents and good deeds he had done as a teenage boy. One such story began as he was roaming about near his home, he became attracted to a noise and went to investigate. He found a colored man beating a small white boy named Frazier, and the Negro, who was called "John the Baptist" said he was going to kill the little fellow. Curt told him to stop it or he would be the one carried away feet first, and the Negro hit Curt in the face with a rock and ran. Curt pulled his gun and fired at him just as he ran into a barbed-wire fence, and fell over the top of it. Curt thought he had killed the Negro, until the next morning when he found out different. He also said he had occasion to keep two persons from drowning, one in Richmond and the other at Beattyville.

Curt's family moved to Winchester, Kentucky, which is in Clark County, and while living there his father died. Curt became a raving, fighting fellow, getting in trouble over and over, then joining the Spanish American War. After the war, he spent time in Florida but finally returned to Jackson, Kentucky to visit his kinsmen.

At the time the "Hargis and Callahan Feud" was in full swing, and he immediately became involved. He shot and killed a man, but was cleared after three trials. He then took the life of John B. Marcum for which he was put in three different jails, spent a year in one of them, was tried by three Judges, and finally received (2) life sentences in prison. He was sentenced on May 4, 1903 along with his accomplice, Tom White. They were placed in prison on June 12, 1903, and Curt was only 24 years old.

The commonwealth lawyers on this prolonged case were Floyd Bird, Thomas and James Marcum, and Captain Willie Hurst whose son-in-law was D.B. Redwine. The defense lawyers were, John B. O'Neil, Judge Noble, James Black, B.F. French, Ben Golden, and J.T. Blanton.

When Jett entered the old penitentiary of 1800, John Turner was the only inmate there from Madison County, Kentucky. The population of the prison in 1910, consisted of 599 white men, 687 colored, 6 white women, and 42 colored.

Jett became the prison gardener and cared for the flowers on the lawn and in the greenhouse, which he helped to build. These were the only growing flowers that most of the prisoners ever got to see. Jett worked at this job for (7) years during which time it became a beautiful project and a worthy task. He also wrote poetry in prison, getting his inspiration from a little sparrow bird that flew in his ventilation window and would sing for him.

"As I sit in the greenhouse thinking today
Of the wrongs I have done and how to repay;
There flies in my window a little sparrow so gay
Whose sweet happy song seems to drive by grief away."

Curt Jett became a Christian worker, and his influence reached many of the other inmates. He told of an invalid woman, whom he never met but who wrote to him and sent verses from the Bible, was responsible for his conversion. He read and studied the Bible, took a correspondence course through the mail, and began working with the other inmates. He was responsible for converting (18) men while he was still in prison.

On December 11, 1918, after fifteen years in prison, Curt Jett was paroled by the state. He went to Asberry College and became a minister of the Gospel, spending the remainder of his life trying to right the wrong he had done. He never tried to hid the fact that he had been in prison, and in the sermons he always made special effort to advise the young men to lead a Christian life and to shun evil.

Curt Jett was an old man when he died near Jackson, the place where it had all began. The Gospel stories he told over a period of years might have yielded him a full reward at the sunset of his stormy life. "For you shall go out with joy, and be led forth in peace; Giving light where there was darkness, and in the shadow of death find rest." These were his favorite words, written while he was in prison at Frankfort, Kentucky.
