Sarah grew up in Sebastian county, Arkansas very close to several of her mother's family. Someone in the Byrum family must have raised sheep because she related (to her granddaughter) how she, as a young girl, was sent to stay with one of the relatives for a few day's to take care of the young children while the women corded the wool, and spun yarn after the shearing. She was very proud of the fact that she knew how to use a spinning wheel.

When her father had the Capital Hotel she, and probably some of her sister's, helped with the serving in the dinning room. They had a pet deer at one time, and the animal would hide under the long dinning tables and paw at the feet of the diners as they ate.

Sarah, or Sadie, as she was called was 5' 2" and woke early every morning, and retired late at night, and she was busy doing something during all those waking hours.

Sarah left Sebastian county, Arkansas shortly after the death of an infant daughter, Fannie Idella, about February or March 1893. She crossed the Arkansas River at Webber Falls in a covered wagon with two small boys. The river was iced over. Unsure if she drove the wagon herself.
