Anthony W. Duffie was born in Maryland about 1843, the son of William Duffie & Elizabeth Dusang. According to William Duffie's obituary, the family came to Hancock County, Illinois, in 1855.
Two tombstones were erected for William at Yetter Cemetery. Many years ago Warren Van Dine read the inscription on the marker placed by the family. It was broken along date of death line. His best determination is illustrated above. There is also a military marker. From the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office:
Name DUFFEE, ANTHONY W
Personal Characteristics
Service Record
*A transcription of the remarks entry reads "DRUMMED OUT OF SERVICE AT CHICAGO ILL." However, there is circumstantial evidence that Anthony drowned at Chicago in 1863. And it's unlikely that the government would have provided a military tombstone for a man who had been dishonorably dismissed. On October 21, 1882, Elizabeth Duffie filed for a pension based on Anthony's service. Almost exactly ten years later, William Duffie, by then a widower, also sought a pension. Neither request was granted. |
