30668. Albertus HENDRICKSON,³⁰³ son of Hendrick HENDRICKSON and Trintje Van DYKE, was born on 7 November 1641 in Leiden, Zuid Holland, Netherlands ^{²⁸^,303} and died in October 1732 in Chester County, Pennsylvania at age 90. Other names for Albertus were Albertus HENDRICKS, and Albertus HENDRIX.

"I am now convinced that Albertus Hendricks came to the Delaware as a servant for Joost de la Grange from Leyden, the Netherlands. Joost de la Grange came to the Delaware with 'his wife, three children, six servants, and two maids,' all of who were aboard the Gulden Arent on 5 Feb 1662. On 29 May 1662, Armegot Printz, wife of Johan Papegoja, sold her father, Johan Printz' Tinicum Island (patented to Printz by Queen Christina) to Joost de la Grange for 6,000 guilders. Printz' plantation, previously known as Pritnhof, was renamed "New Leyden" by de la Grange. Having successfully sold her father's land, Armegot Printz sailed to Europe, collecting 2,000 guilders from de la Grange's bankers in Amsterdam on 31 July 1662. But, subsequent bills of exchange were dishonored. Joost de la Grange died and his widow Margaret married an Englishman Andrew Carr, who was granted a patent for Tinicum Island by Governor Francis Lovelace of New York on 1 Oct 1669. Armegot Printz then came back to America to collect the money due her or else claim Tinicum Island. On 8 March 1671/2 she filed a petition in the New Castle Court, noting that Andrew Carr and his wife were planning to leave for Holland and praying that Carr be required to pay the balance of 3,00 guilders outstanding or else forfeit Tinicum Island to her. The case was referred to the New York Court of Assizes where, on 14 Oct 1672 Armegot Printz Papagoja was awarded judgement for the unpaid principal, costs of suit and damages. On 23 Apr 1673, Peter Alrichs, William Tom, Walter Wharton, and Edmond Cantwell took an inventory of Tinicum Island, finding that its total value (2145 guilders, Holland money) was less than the judgement that Armegot Printz had obtained. At the end of this inventory was the following notation:

"Memorandum that Albert (who is the husbandman) is to perform his condition formerly made with Mr. Andrew Carr to Jufroe Popegay (Mrs. Papegoja).
"From my analysis of all extant records of the Delaware prior to the Quaker invasion of 1681-82, I have found only one person named Albert, namely Albertus Hendricks. This must be a reference to him. Assuming this to be true, it would appear to me that Albertus Hendricks initially was an indentured servant for Joost de la Grange and that, after Andrew Carr married de la Grange's widow, he became an indentured servant for Carr, finishing out his term in the services of Armegot Printz, as a result of her judgement against Carr. Armegot Printz had her own plantation at Printztorp, southwest of Upland (Chester) Creek, granted by Governor Peter Stuyvesant of New Netherland, 28 Aug 1656. This was not far from the lands which Albertus Hendricks later purchased from Jon Gustafsson."

Dr. Craig did not address the question; it can be deduced that Albertus arrived in the American Colonies a single person. He married Aeltje (Anglicized to Helchey), one of the maids, during his indenture or contract period. This is discerned from the birth of their oldest son Jacobus (later legally changed to James) in 1667.

It can be deduced from well-documented history that Albertus arrived in the New Netherland Colonies and was settled in the area around the Delaware River. Subsequently, this area was ceded to the Penn Colonies, which is now known as Pennsylvania.

He was a landowner in Chester Co. PA. Chosen as one of the twelve persons to serve on the Provincial Council, 20 Feb, 1683. Proof came from the PA Land Records, Minute Book G, pp. 266, 27`, 301, 336: " The Petition of the Freeholders" from Chester Co, PA c. 20 Feb 1863 (Papers of William Penn-Pen Papers, HSP.

I believe he was one of the eight children of Hendrick Hendrickson. In 1681, Albert Hendrickson was a juror in Chester Court that year and in almost every year through 1694 according to records of Chester Co. In 1685 he was elected supervisor of highways for the township of Chester for one year (ChCt 55). Also mentioned was the fact Albert Hendricks(on) was the (from Mrs Florance Hendricks Moore's book) "first Dutchman to receive land from William Peen along the Delaware River. He was a member of the Society of Friends. Children of Albert Hendrickson and his wife, Elizabeth were Tobias, James, John, Albertus, Elizabeth, Isabelle, Catherine, Bridget and Margaret. Tobias was the first and born c. 1660. Other sources show Hendrick and Albertus can be found in the Holland Society Year Book of New York, pp 159-166; Tepper-Immigrants to the Middle Colonies, p.39; Carl Boyer, 3rd-ship passenger list, p 129, and other researchers I can mention.

J. Alrich reports:
"We proceeded with them on the proposed voyage, and after some storm and other obstacles, reached the vicinity of the Manhattans. ...through ignorance of the skipper and pilot who were never on this coast, having neared the shore in the evening, she immediately grounded, and so shoved, which continued afterwards harder and harder, that we were not for a moment, sure of our lives, and seeing no escape in the morning, we unanimously resolved to save ourselves on a broken coast, which we, some days alter, understood to be Long Island. An agreement was made with the skipper of the Beaver to charter the passengers to the Colony on the South River. The Beaver set sail from New Amsterdam on April 16 to the South River, arriving at New Amstel, April 25th, with about 125 persons for the Colonie from the ship Prince Maurice, including 50 persons who arrived on other ships.

Thirty-eight soldiers, with the Captain5 and Lieutenant, marched over land because there was no room in the Beaver to allow of their coming by water. The ship experiencing contrary wind, the soldiers, on that account, started somewhat later from the Manhattans, and therefore arrived at the fort six days later."

On 4 May 1686, Garrett Van Swearingen was made Sheriff of St. Mary's County, Maryland. Again on 12 May 1687, he was made sheriff for said county for another year.

• Title: 'Super Cargo' for the ship 'Prince Maurice', 25 January 1656.
Garrett Van Swearingen, son of Dutch noble family was appointed to the post of 'super cargo' for the ship 'Prince Maurice' which was ready to sail for America from Texel, Holand on 25 December 1656. The ship 'Prince Maurice' was stranded near the coast of Long Island on 8 March 1657. Shortly after the incident, Garrett Van Swearingen had to charter the ship 'Beaver' at New Amsterdam (now New York) for the voyage to Fort Casimir and surrounding area. On 25 April 1657, Garrett Van Swearingen and the Dutch colonists took Fort Casimir and surrounding area from the Swedes. As one of the founders, Fort Casimir was renamed as New Amstel (now New Castle, Delaware).

Garrett Van Swearingen wrote the following letter:
'New Amstel, December 8, 1659
'NOBLE, WORSHIPFUL, WISE, RIGH, PRUDENT SIR: --

'With due respect and reverence, have I hereby taken the liberty to greet you, though bound in duty of gratitude, to devote to you all the days of my life. ...I cannot neglect, hereby to communicate my promotion. About a year and a half, after my departure from Patria (my native country), with your Honor's faborable recommendation, I have been appointed Sheriff here subject to the approbation of the Honorables the Principals. Previously, I have taken care of the store as clerk; and after J. Rynevelt's death, as Commissary, from which I have not requested to be discharged, as I have, though unworthy, been recently made Second Councilor, with Sir Alexander Hinojossa, First Councilor, and Captain of the military here, who intends to go over in the Spring, to represent this miserable place.

'If things become worse, I, individually, am ruined, for I have received here, some goods from my brothers, all of which I have laid out in a house, horses and mules, which cost me full, four to six thousand guilders, Holland currency.

'Besides that, I am also married. ...

'Herewith I commend your Honor to the mercy and protection of the Most High God, and remain.

• Occupation: Councilor of the colony at New Amstel in America, 27 August 1661.
On 20 August 1660, Garrett Van Swearingen and his family were granted permission to visit Holland.

On 27 August 1661, the City of Amsterdam in Holland was determined to continue the colony at New Amstel in America. Garrett Van Swearingen was again appointed as the councilor.

Also in a letter to Peter Stuyvestant, Director-General of the New Neatherlands from William Beekman, Garret Van Swearingen was called 'The Honorable President, Van Swearingen.'

I Garrett Vansweringen of ye citty of St. Mary's in St. Marys county, haveing consideredly Many Yeares I have Lived in this World and therefore but a Little time to remain and for Reason of the Uncertainty When this tyme shall be Expired I doe hereby Will and require that When it Should be ye Will of God to Call me out of this Mortall Life My body shall be buried if God Doth permitt.

According to ye custom of ye Roman Catholique Church and ye Priest That shall bury me I doe give him One Thousand Pound of Tobacco and further I doe require My Executors herafter named to take Care In 1664, Colonel Nicols of England, sent by His Majesty, Charles II, and his duputy Sir Robert Carr were to take over the Dutch colony at New Amstel. Garrett Van Swearingen made an deposition in 1684 regarding the conquest of the Dutch possessions at New Amstel by English...

'In the year 1664, arrived Col. Nicholas, sent out by his Majesty, King Charles II, whereupon the Fort and country were brought under submission by Sir Robert Carr, and duputied with two ships, for that intent. Sir Robert Carr did often protest to me, that he did not come as an enemy, but as a friend; demanding, only in friendship, what was the King's own, in that country. There was taken from the City and the inhabitants thereabout, to the value, so near as I can now remember, of four thousand pound sterling, likewise arms, powder and shot in great quantity. Four and twenty guns were, the greatest part, transported to New York.

'The Dutch soldiers were taken prisoners, and given to the merchantmen that were there, in recompense of their services; and into Virginia, they were transported to be sold, as was credibly reported by Sir Robert Carr's officers, and other persons there living in the town.

'All sorts of tools for handicraftsman, and all plough gear, and other things to cultivate the ground, which were in great quantity; besides the estate of Governor Debouissa and myself; except some household stuff and a negro I got away; and some other movables, Sir Robert Carr did permit me to sell.

'Colonel Nicholas, understanding what Sir Robert Carr had got at Delaware, took all again from the said Sir Robert Carr, when the said Colonel came there again in person, as I was informed, when I was upon my way to Maryland.'

Swearingen family tradition says that when the Dutch colony at New Amstel surrendered to the English Crown, Garrett Van publicly broke hs sword across his knees, and, throwing it to the left and right, renounced his allegiance.

Shortly after the English's takeover of Dutch colony at New Amstel, Garrett Van Swearingen and his family migrated to St. Mary's City, St. Mary's County, the province of Maryland.

• Citizenship: 13 April 1669, Province Of Maryland.
On 13 April 1669, a bill was passed by the General Assembly of the province of Maryland for the 'Free Denization and Naturalization of Garrett Van Swearingen and others,' upon the following petition. The petition was transcribed as follows:

'To the Right, Honorable, the Lord Proprietory of the Province of Maryland and Avalon, Lord Baron of Baltimore.

'The Petition of Garrett Van Swearingen, Elizabeth de Barrette, wife of the siad Garrett, Elizabeth and Zacharias Van Swearingen, children of the said Garrett and Barbara ... all residents and inhabitanst of this Province, humbly soweth into your Lordship:

'The Petition of Garrett Van Swearingen, was born in Reenstwerdam, Holland, under the dominion of the States General of the United Provinces: Barbara De Barrette, his wife, in Valenciennes, in the Low Countries, belonging to the King of Spain: Elizabeth Van Swearingen and Zacharias Van Swearingen their children in New Amstel, on Delaware Bay, then under the government of the said States General: ... and your Petitioners being now removed into this Province --- being invited to come and dwell in this Province upon confidence of your Lordship's Declaration of July 2, 1649, whereby you did empower your Governor to grant lands to any persons of French, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, or other foreign descent, in as ample manner, and upon the same term, as to any persons of British or Irish descent.

'And during their abode in this Province your Petitioners have been faithful and obedient to your Lordship's Law; yet for that your Petitioners are not of British or Irish descent they cannot take benefit of the laws and customs of this Province, as the good people of British and Irish descent.

'May it please your Lordship, out of your abundant goodness and care, that your Petitioners shall henceforth be adjudged, as natural born people of this Province of Maryland, or as if they were of British or Irish descent as aforesaid, and that they shall be enabled to prosecute and defend all manner of actions and other demands, as liberally and frankly as if they have been naturally born within this Province of Maryland or were of British or Irish descent, any Laws or customs of this Province to the contrary notwithstanding.

'And your Petitioners shall as in duty bound pray & c.'

During the period of 1680 and 1692, the Upper House of the General Assembly of the Province of Maryland held their meeting at Garrett Van Swearingen's house in St. Mary's City, St. Mary County, Maryland.

On 12 May 1684, Garrett Van Swearingen 'Of the City of St. Mary's, Gentleman, aged eight and forty years, or thereabouts,' made the deposition regarding the settlement of Delaware Bay and River by the Dutch and Swedes people.

Garrett married Barbara De BARETTE on 1 March 1659 in New Amstel, New Castle Co., DE ³⁵⁴ ^,355.^,356 Barbara was born in 1636 in Vanenciennes, Lowlands Of Holland and died on 4 February 1698 in St. Mary's City, St. Mary, Maryland at age 62. Other names for Barbara were Debra, and Elizabeth.

i. Elizabeth Van SWEARINGEN was born between 1660 and 1665 in New Castle, New Castle Co., DE ^{³⁵⁷^,358^,359} and died in 1736 in St. Marys, St. Marys, Maryland about age 76.

ii. Zacharias Van SWEARINGEN was born in 1662 in New Castle, New Castle Co., DE, died about 1711 in St.Mary's Parish, Prince George's, Maryland about age 49, and was buried in St.Anne's Chyrd, Annapolis, Anne Arundel.

iv. Mary (Maria) Van SWEARINGEN was born in 1667 and died in 1734 in St. Mary's, Maryland at age 67.

Garrett next married Mary SMITH on 5 October 1676.³⁶⁰ Mary was born on 5 October 1639 in France and died on 5 September 1713 in St. Mary's, Maryland at age 73.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Loving Daughter Tereshea Vanswetingen four Negroes, two feather beds two Rugs two pair of Blankets two pair of Sheets two bolsters one Pint Silver tankard Six Silver Spoons a Chest of Drawers and a Small Looking Glass and to Each of them my Said Daughters a Suite of table linen all which to be Delivered to my said Daughters by my Executor at the Day of their Marriage the above said Legacies being in fuIl satisfaction for their part or portion of their fathers and my Estate.

Item I Give and bequeath unto my loving Son Joseph Vansweringen all that tract or parcel of Land lying in St Maryes County near St Maryes Called the point containing two hundred acres or thereabouts to him and his heirs and assignees for Ever, my Said Son being and is to maintain my Said two Daughters handsomely until they are married.

Item I Give unto my loving Son in Law Mr. William Bladen and my Daughter Bladen a Ring of thirty shillings price to Each of them.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto My Loving Daughter Elinor Carroll two Thousand pound of Tobacco to he paid by my Executor in Convenient time after my decease, it is my Desire that the Negroes which I have Given to My two Daughters Shall be Such as my Said Executor Shall think fit they not Exceeding forty years a piece.

Item I Give and Bequeath all the Rest of My Estate both Real and person unto my Said Son Joseph Vansweringen after all my Just Debts are paid and lastly I doe hereby Constitute and appoint my loving Son Joseph Vansweringen my whole and sole Executor of this my last will and Testament in witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this Seventeenth day of February 1712/13

* In the codicil to a Will, revocation of a deed is rather exceptional. About this, Elizabeth Randolph comments:
Apparently Joshua DOYNE made a Deed of Gift of 200 acres of land to his son Dennis (the son by his first wife Barbara). Dennis died (Will proved, Charles County, 23 February 1697, vol. 6, p 81) and within four months, Dennis's wife Jane also died. [Per Inventory for Dennis, she died in childbirth, 4 June 1697. (Accts. 18.163 Charles County)]

Since Dennis apparently left no heirs, Joshua must have thought it over and decided to revoke the Deed of Gift in case the parents or siblings of Jane might exercise a claim to the land.

Anyway, Joshua had not originally mentioned this 200 acres in his Will; so he wrote a codicil (10 March 1697/98) revoking the Deed of Gift and left any unmentioned land to his second wife, Jane MATTHEWS. Apparently no one contested this and, 40 years later, when Joshua's widow - Jane - wrote her Will, she mentioned this 200 acres as follows:

"IMPRES Whereas My late husband Mr. Joshua DOYNE, late of St. Mary's County, Gent Deceased, Did by one Paragraph of his last Will & Testament Invest me with the remaining part of his Estate . . . he said Husband, Did not mention in his said Will, A certain Parcell of Land Containing two hundred Acres, which he formerly design'd to Give his Son Denis DOYNE (in marriage) And that Justice may take place, & the Land Descend as by my Husband was designed, Then I Give & Bequeath unto Joseph DOYNE, the Second Son of Mr. Jesse DOYNE Deceased (who was Heir at Law to Denis DOYNE aforesaid) . . . ."

Joshua married Jane SANDERS ²⁸ about 1659 in Somerset, Maryland. Jane was born about 1638 in Somerset, Maryland ^²⁸ and died in 1738 in St. Mary's County, Maryland ^²⁸ about age 100.

ii. Jesse DOYNE was born in 1680 in St Marys, Somerset, Maryland and died in 1727 in Charles County, Maryland at age 47.

iv. Ethelbert DOYNE was born in 1684 in St. Marys, Maryland and died after 1698.

vi. Ignatius DOYNE was born in 1700 in Wexford, Ireland and died in 1763 at age 63.

viii. Dennis DOYNE was born in 1678 in Wexford, Ireland and died in 1698 in Charles County, Maryland at age 20.

Joshua next married Jane MATTHEWS, daughter of Dr. Thomas MATTHEWS and Jane COCKSHOTT. Jane was born in 1647 and died in 1698 at age 51.

Taking into account the period of the death of his son, he must have been married when he was still a priest. This was not uncommon in Groningen in those days. ³⁶⁶
