Artz Cemetery
-------------------

NE of Aledo, Section 4 (see Cemeteries Page for map and other Mercer Cemeteries. Artz is on Map 11). Family Names: Hindman; Artz; Trembly; Lambert; Dulin; Ashbaugh (Return to Surnames Page).

The Artz Cemetery as walked down by the DAR in the 1960's contained less than a page of tombstone inscriptions. We are including the inscriptions in full as contained in Volume 3 of the Mercer County Cemetery Records in the National DAR Library. We have followed this with Family Group Sheets with information we have discovered in a variety of records in the hope that it will help researchers. The Hindman family is the principle one of interest on this site as they had the New Boston connections. We are including a family group sheet here until such time as we can make a proper page for them. Daniel Hindman was married to Viola J. Willits (as second wife) and more on Viola can be found on the Levi Willits Page under James Monroe and Sarah Myers Willits.

We have received three articles from the Aledo Times Record from Lois Retherford (two from 6/1/2005 and one from 6/8/2005) with photos and information about the Artz Cemetery. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see them as it is a pdf file Artz Cemetery Articles.

In February 2009 we received an additional article from Lois - see Artz Cemetery 2009. This article mentions that William H. Ashbaugh is buried there with a rusty G. A. R. marker. It is barely readable and his stone is broken but he died July 1868 at the age of 27 years and a few months.
