There were at least two Swisher families found in Mercer County; Abraham Swisher and Abram B. Swisher. They are not found in the 1860 census in Mercer County, but probably lived across the County line in Rock Island County (to be verified.) Abram B. Swisher was mentioned as a teacher at Centre School in Eliza Township in the winter of 1859 (see Schools). He attended the October 15, 1859, meeting of the Eliza Teacher's Institute. A Thomas J. Swisher also attended and was elected secretary of the session. We have no further information on Thomas J. Swisher. Abram B. Swisher married Sarah J. Boruff on 9/19/1861. Sarah was the daughter of Valentine Boruff, Jr., of Eliza Township. The History of Mercer County, 1882 mentions that A. B. Swisher served as supervisor of Eliza Township for eight years (dates not specified). A. B. Swisher owned land in the SE/4 Section 8, Eliza Township in 1875 (see plat map.) A. B. Swisher was school treasurer in 1882 and rendered an accounting of finances for the year 1880 (see Schools). A. B. Swisher also served on the Mercer County Agricultural Board and served as president for the twenty-ninth annual fair of the board held in September, 1882. Abram B. Swisher died August 29, 1885, at the age of 51 years, 1 month, 16 days. He is buried in Eliza Creek Cemetery. Sarah J. Boruff Swisher is buried next to him; the dates on her tombstone are 1841-1918. Next to them is Charlie L. Swisher, died 9/19/1871, age 6 years, 8 months, 15 days. When we obtain the 1870 & 1880 census records we should have additional information about the family. Abraham Swisher married America Gibson on 5/26/1861 in Mercer County. We have no further information on Abraham's life in Mercer County. He is buried in Eliza Creek Cemetery; tombstone dates 1828-1914. Again, we may find further information in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. |
