Samuel S. Guerrant, born July 12, 1867, physician and orchardist at Algoma, Franklin Co., Va., and one of the most active civic leaders and Presbyterian churchmen in his region until his death in 1940. He married three times:


m. 1st Florence Thomson (1897).
Children: Esther D. Hale; S. Saunders Guerrant, Jr.; Sallie Anne Helie; John L. Guerrant; Peter M. Guerrant.


m. 2nd Louise Denison (1914).
One child: Helen L. T. Watson.


m. 3rd, Harriet Denison (1916).
Children: Richard F., William H., Robert S., and Mary Ingles Dodson.

"In 1983 we visited S. Saunders Guerrant, Jr.and his son S. Saunders Guerrant, III in Richmond, VA. Saunders wrote a small booklet about his father S. Saunders Guerrant, Sr. and his descendants. I have a copy of that booklet. I also have a little personal correspondence from S. Saunders Guerrant, Jr". a letter dated September 10, 1982.


Dr. Guerrant, Horticulturist, Dies at Home


ROCKY MOUNT--Dr. Samuel S. Guerrant, orchardist and one of Franklin County's largest land owners, died at his home near Callaway Monday after an illness of several days.
Dr. guerrant was a former president of the Virginia State Horticultural Society and for years had devoted a great deal of his engergies to perfecting apple strains that have become nationally known. A Franklin County native, he had lived at his present home except for a brief time whie practicing medicine elsewhere and on occasions when he traveled abroad.
At the time of his death, Dr. Guerrant was chairman of the Franklin County School Trustee Electoral Board.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Harriet Dennison Guerrant, and the following children: Mrs. John S. Hale of Upland, Cal.; Mrs. W. I. Heile of Exeter, N. H.; Miss Helen Guerrant, Miss Mary Ingles Guerrant and Robert S., William H., Richard, Peter M., John L. and Saunders Guerrant.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 P. M. at the home.
