LIFE AND TIMES IN HOPKINTON, N.H., by C.C. Lord, pp. 326, 327.
Isaac Chandler, one of the Masonian grantees of Hopkinton, is said to have come to this town from Ipswich, MA. In the record of rights held under the Masonian grant, Isaac Chandler and Isaac Chandler, Jr., held one right each. Isaac Chandler was one of the first selectmen chosen after the incorporation of the town in 1765. the names of Isaac Chandler appears in the annual list of Hopkinton's selectmen eight times from 1765 to 1783, not to mention Sergeant Chandler, Lieutenant Chandler, and Major Chandler, who all appear in the selectmen's list within the time mentioned, and may have all been the same individual. The abundance of shady elms now adorning Hopkinton village are said to be largely the result of the forethought of Isaac Chandler and Isaac Chandler, Jr.
The name of Isaac Chandler appears in the colonial records of New Hampshire during the French War. Isaac Chandler, Sr., is said to have died before the Revolution.
Isaac Chandler, Jr., died December 8, 1809, aged 82; Meril, his wife June 3, 1805. Isaac Chandler, Jr., is identified as a major by his gravestone in the old cementery in Hopkinton village.

THE WILLIAM BARSTOW FAMILY, by Arthur Hitchcock Radasch, pages 6 & 8.
He was called Capt. Joseph in the Hanover records. He and his brothers Benjamin and Samuel represented the Barstows in Hanover when it was established as a separate town. At the first town meeting held June 29, 1727, Joseph was elected moderator. He resided on Broadway, and built the house later known as the Salmond house. In 1720 he and Benjamin Stetson received a grant of two acres of land on the Indian Head River, between Pine Hill and Rocky Run, where they were to locate a forge and refinery, and with three others he erected the forge subsequently known as Barstow's Forge, and which was operated and improved by his descendants for 75 years. It was purchased by the Salmonds when his grandson, Joshua Barstow, removed to Exeter, NH in 1795.
Joseph's farm consisted of 70 acres; he had other lots of land for a total of 826 acres. His estate was appraised at 6926 pounds, a large sum for those days. Among the items in the inventory were: 1/4 of a sloop, 1/4 of a grist mill, 1/4 of the new forge, and 1/4 of a sawmill. He also owned two negro slaves. In the division of his estate, after provision for his widow, his sons James and Joshua each received 2/7, and his three daughters each received 1/7 (PR 1187, Plymouth Co.; or Book 5:846).

THE BOOK OF DOW, by Robert Piercy Dow, page 133.
Appears as buying a Salisbury farm 1731, but he did not live with his father for years previously. There is a clearly defined family tradition that the children of Joseph Dow by his 1st wife, all more or less austere Quakers, regarded with horror what seemed to them the wild life of the family by 2nd wife. No love was lost between them when John came to administer the estate in 1734.

440. Job MILK was born about 1694 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. He died before 1778. Job married Abigail DAVOL on 12 Jul 1719 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island. [Parents]

Little Compton, RI chosen by Jobe Milk for his home, is rolling land. To those who came from Boston and its environs, as the first Quakers in America did, it was a Promise Land--a milk climate, fertile soil, and a refuge from the persecutions of Plymouth. "'Aquidneck, Isle of Pease,' so the red men called Rhode Island; and a place of pease it proved to be for the persecuted settlers who found sanctuary upon it." (Maude Howe Elliott) From the hills one gains a fine view of the pretty farms and pastures. Eastward are the lowlands, necks and "salt rivers." In summer the early settlers cut hay on the farthest points of land and brought it up the salt rivers to their farms by boats and barges. So much hay was transported that it caused controversy amoung local authorities.
Land holdings of Jobe Milk in Dartmouth indicate he may have been a "proprietor" there. He probably bought Rights before embarking at Boston for the then frontier. Although a Will of his father's has not been found, it is probably that he was given a sum of money for that purpose.
