552. Joseph WILBORE was born 1656 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He died 4 May 1729 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island. Joseph married Anne BROWNELL on 7 May 1683 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island. [Parents]

THE WILDBORES IN AMERICA, Vol. 1, by John Reid Wilbor and Benjamin Franlin Wilbour, 1933, page
The epitaph on his tombstone reads, "In Memory of Joseph Wilbore son of William of Portsmouth who emigrated to Little Compton in 1680, died May 4, 1729, age 73 yrs"
Therefore it would seem that he was of Little Compton, RI in 1680.
By his father's will he received 30 acres of land near the Commons.
This will was made Dec. 15, 1701 and his father died in 1710.
It is very probable that he was living on this land for many years prior to his fathers decease.
He added to this farm and is buried in the old burying ground on the place. He made his will Jan. 11, 1728 and it was proven June 4, 1729.
His wife Anne Wilbore made her will Dec. 12, 1739 and it was proven April 7, 1747. All of their children were born in Little Compton.

553. Anne BROWNELL was born 1654 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. She died 2 Apr 1747 in Little Compton, Newport Co., Rhode Island. [Parents]

554. Christopher GIFFORD was born Jul 1658 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. He died 22 Nov 1748 in Little Compton, Bristol Co., Rhode Island. Christopher married Deborah PERRY about 1686. [Parents]

THE GENEALOGY OF THE GIFFORD FAMILY FROM MASS. TO MAINE, By Christine R. Brown, 1981, Campball Printing Inc., Knoxville, TN. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, UT. 929.273 9366b. page 25.
Christopher Gifford, son of William, was born in July 1658. He married about 1683/84, Deboran Perry, daughter of Edward and Mary (Freeman) Perry. She was born at Sandwich 2 April 1665 and died 23 March 1724 at Dartmouth, Mass. Harry E. Gifford and others have alleged that Christopher Gifford had a first wife named Meribah, however, no original record of this marriage can be found. Christopher and Deborah named their first daughter Meriban and this may have been in honor of a deceased, childless first wife. This was a custom of the period.
Hannahiah Gifford was living at Navesink, Shrewsbury, NJ, by 1668. It is suspected that he may have taken with him this younger brother, Christopher, as there is ample evidence that the two owned adjoining property there. In 1679 titles to land there were confirmed to "Annanias" and Christopher Gifford. Christopher had returned to Cape Cod before 7 July 1682 when he was before the Court for "contemptuously speaking against dispensers of the word of God" and was fined ten shillings.
It seems that his father gave him land in that part of Falmouth called Suckanesset. We find that "Christopher Gifford of Suskanessett in ye Colony of New Plymouth, planter and Joseph Huss, cooper or planter, are indited...for their notorious misdemeaners and trespass against his Majisties authourties, laws and pease." The record related that "Christopher Gifford did...about ye ieght day of December last (1685) and at other times in ye sd December, turbulently and violently, by force and arms, resist ye constable of sd Suskanesset in ye execution of his office, and then and there did wickedly stricke Moses Rowley, Junr., being one of the constables, or assistants...on ye head with a c edrtain stick or club, thereby fetching blood and shrewdly wounding of him in his head to his great damage." And, when arrested "ye sd Christopher carrying himself very unruly and forceable resisting." He and Hull were accused of conspiring to resist the authorities in the house of Joseph Hatch, Sr., and that later in the same month they made "falce please...thereby causing a false imprisement or arrest of sd constable & his assistants & other King's officers." Both were found guilty and Christopher Gifford was fined 7 pounds; Hull 5 pounds plus charges and costs. Gifford's share of the charges came to 5:12s and18s costs. He petitioned for a reduction of the fine, agreeing to pay 20 shillings to Rowley "for the wound he gave him in his head". This episode suggests that Gifford was not under strict Quaker discipline at that time, and contrasts with the rest of the records concerning him.
William Gifford, his father, in his will of 9 April 1687 gave to his son Christopher only a "cross out saw and a new payer of shoose", but the records make clear that during the father's life time he must have helped him to acquire land both in New Jersey and in that part of Falmouth called "Tetaker". Christopher and his brother Robert were deeded in May 1683, a large tract of land in Dartmouth where both brothers settled. By a deed of 29 January 1688 (not recorded until 30 July 1714) Christopher Gifford of Darthmouth sold for 50 shillings paid by William Ricketson (of the same place) a parcel of salt meadow on the east side of the "Coxet" river at Petskechuet, one acre. Christopher and his brother, Robert, made a first attempt to divide their tract 2 March 1688/89. By a "Certificate of Transfer" dated 17 June 1689, Christopher Gifford "of Sandwich" in New England released to the heirs of John Jenkins of the same place his right and title in the share of East Jersey sold by his deceased father, William Gifford, to the said John Jenkins.
An instrument dated 20 Nov 1699 shows that Daniel Wilcox of Portsmouth, in the colony of Rhode Island, yoeman, sold for 75 pounds paid by Christopher Gifford of Dartmouth, yoeman, a tract of land containing about 60 acres "at Poycachuk Point, butting on Coaset River" and 4 acres "on the eastward side" (recorded 6 April 1700, Bristol County Deeds, Vol. I, p. 46). This same item appears as Docket #4558 in the Records of the Superior Court of Judicature, Boston, Court House Annes, 14th floor but the price is given as 70 pounds.
The will of Edward Perry of Sandwich, dated 29 December 1694 and proved 9 April 1695 directs that "my daughter Deborah shall have twenty pounds in money to be paid to her by my son Edward."
The will of Christopher Gifford of Little Compton, dated 5 October 1746, proved 8 Dec 1748, bequeaths to his son Christopher, his daughters Audrie, Mary Borden, Deborah Wilcox; the heirs of his daughter Meribah; his grandsons Elijah and Canaan Gifford; his granddaughters Rachel, Phillis and Dorcas Gifford. The residue of his estate was given to his son Enos Gifford. (Little Compton Wills, Bristol County Probates Vol. 1, p. 43.)

OLD HOMES IN STONINGTON CT, by Grace Denison Wheeler, page 219, 220.
Scattered about this part of our town were the homes of many of the Breed family and it is still called Breedtown.
The stone near the side doorstep of Mr. Henry Breed's house was one of the stones which Mr. John Breed had in his mill for tanning leather, when he lived a few rods west of this house, with his wife, who was the daughter of Deacon Gershom Palmer, whom he married in 1690.
He came to Stonington and bought land of Dea. Gershom Palmer and married his daughter Mercy.
At their graves in Wequetequock, we read, "In memory of a pious pair, this carved stone was erected here, viz, Mr. John Breed and his wife Mercy, who lived together in ye marriage state in a most religious manner about 64 years and then deceased, leaving numerous offspring. He in 1751 about ninety years of age and she in 1772 about 83 years. Erected in the year 1772 by six of their children then living.
Behold the righteous live long on the earth,
And in old age resign their breath,
They and their offspring here are blessed:
When done with life they go to rest."

Job Card (Richard), of New Shoreham, Westerly, South Kingstown, and Charlestown, RI, born about 1653, died before 7 Sept. 1739, when his will was proved at Charlestown. He married first, in Nov. 1689, Martha Acres, daughter and coheiress of John Acres, yoeman, of Dorchester, Mass., and of Providence, Newport, and New Shoreham, RI; secondly, 28 May 1716, Margery (Acres) Tosh, the other remaining daughter and coheiress of the aforesaid John Acres and widow of Daniel Tosh, this marriage being witnessed by Job Card, Jr., and Rebecca Card (New Shoreham Records, book 1, p. 164); and thirdly, at South Kingstown, RI, 27 Aug. 1724, Hannah Bull.
He first appears on 1 July 1674, owning land in Newport, RI, which was in the possession of his mother. He probably moved to Block Island about 1685, as his name was on the list of freemen of New Shoreham in April. 1686 (New Shoreham Records, book 1, p. 138). In 1688 he was licensed there. He was on the New Shoreham list of freemen 10 Jan. 1692/3 (ib., book 1, p. 201), but at this time he was temporarily in Westerly, and the town of Westerly granted him land in "Great Neck" (afterwards in Charlestown) in 1692, after he had been "driven from Block Island by the French" (Westerly town records). In 1691 he was constable at Block Island, and in 1695 he was at Pettyquamscott (South Kingstown). His stay on the mainland was, however, only temporary,m as he constantly appears in the New Shoreham records at this time. On 12 Nov. 1692 he, of New Shoreham, with George Hassell and Rebecca, his wife, sold his Newport land to Joseph Card of that town. On 9 Apr. 1700 he was a member of the New Shoreham Town Council. On 8 July 1701 he witnessed an acknowledgment of Margery Tosh (New Shoreham Records, book 1, p. 253), and on 6 June 1701 he was chosen rate maker (ib., book 1, p. 267). On 15 Dec. 1698 he, in partnership with William Champlin, owned land in South Kingstown at Matunue.
On 14 Apr. 1703 he was second townsman of New Shoreham, and at this time he was also town treasurer )ib., book 1, pp. 365-366). On 17 Aug. 1703 he was also deputy warden (ib., book 1, p. 338). On this date he and Martha Card witnessed the marriage of John Rodman and Margaret Gross (ib.). In 1708 in that same year he was deputy from New Shoreham to the General Assembly. He was of Block Island 8 June 1709, but on 24 July 1713 he, styled "of Westerly," sold land at New Shoreham to Nathaniel Mott (ib., book 1, p. 437).  From that time on he resided in Westerly, in that part of the town afterwards set off as Charlestown, and in South Kingstown. His farm seems to have been in both towns, as he is called sometimes of Westerly and sometimes of South Kingstown. He was a justice at Westerly in 1714 and moderator of the Westerly town meeting 2, 1 mo. 1714/15 (Westerly town records). But at his second marriage, 28 May 1716, he is styled "of Block Island," but it would seem that by this time he had moved for good to South County.
In his will, dated 5 Jan. 1730/1, and proved at Charlestown 7 Sept. 1739, he is styled "of South Kingstown." He makes bequests to his four children, Job Card, Rebecca Tosh, Margery Foster, and Sarah Sheffield, and also to his daughter Martgha or to Josha Rathbone. He states that he has given to Isaac Sheffield the land where his home stands, as the portion of his daughter, Jane Sheffield. He bequeaths to his daughter Sarah Sheffield and to her first son, Joshua Rathbone, and also to the tow daughters of Jane Sheffield, namely Mary and Martha Sheffield. To his daughter Rebecca Tosh he gives lands at Corn Neck, Block Island (Charlestown Town Council, vol. 1, p. 85). On 24 Nov. 1740 Capt. Isaac Sheffield brought in an account against the estate of his father-in-law, Job Cart (ib., p. 79).
    Children by first wife:
Job, Rebecca, Martha, Margery, Jane, Sarah.
