Compelling factors for expansion
Once the area of the Bay was settled, starting up new plantations became very difficult. Open land was getting scarce as the early successful plantations turned into towns.
In addition to the above, the longer the Puritan governors and influential church leaders were away from the eye of their King and board members of the Massachusette Bay Company in England, the less tolerant of differing points of view on religion (and personal behavior) they became. There was a lot of bickering over the fine points of church services among the leaders and the ministers. One point in particular was Baptism which was an area of major contention that split many churches apart.
In the beginning, most puritans were of a moderate variety and just wanted to purify the English Church of any remaining Pagan Catholic Rites in their services. Unlike the Pilgrims of Plymouth (whom they strongly disagreed with and looked down upon), who wanted to separate from the Church of England and create something new.
In a short span of years our puritans became even more severe in their beliefs, out striding even the pilgrims in their sternness. We all have very vivid pictures in our minds of what they looked like and how they behaved. Anyone disagreeing with their ever-tighting strict point of view was punished and sent back to England as a trouble maker, sometimes banished, mutilated. Later they would just be killed outright.
I am happy to say I had a few trouble makers in my line who stood up for the rights of those with differing beliefs and indeed held some very strong beliefs of their own, which caused them a great deal of trouble.
