Notes and cautions
These numbers are very tentative--I hope to get the company descriptive books over the next few years, which should give more reliable numbers.
I have assumed that people whose cause of death Bates does not record actually died of disease (as is true of at least some cases).
I have not included people who died during the war but after they were mustered out (including, for example, George Whisler (K))
I did not include George Alkmus (E), because the only reference I have to him is on a cemetery web page.
I do not know whether Charles Smith (B) died on 31 August or 21 October 1864
I excluded Stephen Kelly (E), whom Bates lists as dying in the Battle of Gettysburg, but who in fact survived the war.
