[The return for November 1867, record of events, includes this report:] November 4th 1867.
Inspecting party from Dept Hd Qrt. arrived from Fort C F Smith M.T.--
Mail and train arrived from Fort Reno, D.T.--
Five messengers arrived during the night, reporting that a train en route to Fort C. F. Smith, escorted by 40 enlisted men of 27th Inf. in command of Lieut. Shurley 27" Inf were attacked by Indians at Goose Creek, 20 miles west of this Post.
--Bvt. Lieut. Col. Green with his command, casually at this post, and Co "D" 2nd Cav. Bvt. Major Gordon comdg were sent to Lieut Shurleys relief.
Nov 5th
Bvt. Lieut. Col. Green's command returned to this post, with Lieut. Shurley 27th Inf. (wounded)
Pvt. Partenheimer Co. G 27" Inf killed
Corpl. Donley Co "H" and Pvt. McKeever Co "E" mortally and Corpl. Fitzgerald Co "I" 27th Inf. slightly wounded.--
[The return lists 0 enlisted men killed since the last return, and doesn't include Lieutenant Shurley on its roster of commissioned officers.
Searching back through April 1867 revealed these references to Co G of the 27th Infantry, both from September 1867:]

The Troops have been engaged in guarding trains between this Post and Ft Phil Kearney D.T. guarding wood trains, building barracks, and performing the ordinary garrison duties. On the 4th inst the escort to a train from this Post to Ft Phil Kearney D.T. under command of Lieut E.R.P. Shurley 27th Inf. were while returning to this Post attacked by a large party of Indians near Peno Creek D.T. The Indians captured one mule team wagon and contents, the property of the U.S. and a quantity of Sulters [sic] Supplies for this Post.
Casualities [sic] resulting
Lt E.R.P. Shurley 27" Inf and 3 Enlisted men wounded
3 Enlisted men killed
