Before the war

He was born on 18 May 1838, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, to Nodiah M Burroughs and Emeline [unknown family name]. [sources: date: 6, 9; 3 [21 in 1862], 5 (42 in 1880), 6 (62 in 1900), 12 (12 in 1850). place: 5, 6, 11, 12 (Me)]

In 1850, he was living in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was living with his parents Nodiah and Emeline Burroughs, and with Mary E Burroughs. He had attended school within the year. [source: 12]

In 1860, he was living in ward 12, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was living with his parents Nodiah and Emeline Burroughs, and with Betsy Burroughs. [source: 13]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 24 January 1862. He enlisted at Washington, DC. He was mustered in, at Washington, DC, as a corporal in company I. [sources: 1, 3 (24 Jan 62), 4, 9 (8 Jan 62), 14 (pvt), 15 (pvt)]

He was wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg. [source: 9]

He was discharged on 28 March 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability. He was a corporal in company I. [sources: 1, 2 (no date), 3, 4 (1863), 9, 14, 15]

He also served in the 1st unattached Massachusetts Militia Infantry. He enlisted on 24 April 1864. He was discharged on 7 July 1864. [sources: 4, 7, 8, 9 (29 Apr 64 - 27 Jul 64]

He also served in company F of the 21st Veterans' Reserve Corps. He enlisted on 3 December 1864. He "stood guard over the body of Lincoln after the assassination of the martyred president". He was discharged on 21 November 1865. [sources: 7, 8, 9]

After the war

On 20 April 1863, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]

On 10 March 1868, he married Medora N Burroughs. She was born on 29 November 1848, in Corinth, Vermont, to Abel W Burroughs and Nancy [unknown surname]. He was a carpenter. In 1900, she had had three children, two of whom were alive, including: [sources: 6, 9, 11]

In 1880, he was living in Alfred, York County, Maine. He was living with his wife Dora and children Clara and Earnest. He was a farmer. [source: 5]

In 1890, he was living in Alfred, York County, Maine. He had a shell wound in his left arm. [source: 4]

In 1900, he was living in Sanford, York County, Maine. He was living with his wife Medora, and children Clara and Earnest. He was a carpenter. [source: 6]

On 22 May 1908, he again applied for a pension. [source: 8]

He was commander of Willard Post, number 70, Grand Army of the Republic, Maine. [source: 9]

He died on 4 December 1913, at Kennebunk, York County, Maine (or Sanford, Maine). He was buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk, York County, Maine. [source: 8, 9]

On 26 December 1913, his widow, Medora N Burroughs, applied successfully from Massachusetts for a pension. [source: 7]

In 1920, his widow, Medora Burroughs, was living on a farm on Dundee [?] Road, Jackson, Carroll County, New Hampshire. She was living with her niece Bertha Dune. [source: 10]

On 16 October 1921, his widow, Medora N, died. She was buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk, York County, Maine. [source: 9]
