91st PA: David Lingenfelter (or Lingenfetter)

David Lingenfelter (or Lingenfetter)

Before the war

He was born on 14 February 1829, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, to Abraham Lingenfelter and Elizabeth Lindsey (6). [sources: date: 6, 3 (37 in 1864), 4, 5 (24 in 1850), 8 (35 in 1860). place: 3, 4, 5, 8. parents: 6; 5]

He married Lavinia Mary Miller. She was born on 12 May 1830, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these five children:

[sources: 6, 8]

In 1850, he was living in Napier Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Lavinia, their daughter Mary, and John Nipple. The previous household is headed by Abram and Elizabeth Lingenfelter (his parents), and includes William and Elizabeth (his siblings). He was a farmer. [source: 5]

In 1860, he was living in Napier Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Lavinia, and with Mary, Margaret, John, Samuel, and Sarah (presumably their children). He was a farmer, and owned $600 in personal property. [source: 8]

When he enlisted, he was a farmer. [sources: 3, 4]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 3, 4]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864. He enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district. He was a private in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 9]

He was wounded on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. [source: 1]

His descriptive list was sent somewhere on 18 May 1865. [source: 4]

He was discharged at Washington, DC, by general order 94, War Department, on 2 June 1865 or 25 May 1865. He was a private, in company B. [sources: 1 (2 Jun 65), 2 (25 May 65), 9] (2).

After the war

On 12 January 1875, he died. He was buried in a cemetery near Cessna, [Bedford County,] Pennsylvania. [source: 7]

The government provided a headstone for his grave under a contract dated 21 August 1883. [source: 7]

Note on identity

According to numerous gedcoms available on RootsWeb WorldConnect, another David Lingenfelter was born to Michael Lingenfelter and Sarah Stine on 8 June 1822 or 8 July 1823, apparently in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, or in Greenfield Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He married Isabella C Dodson, died on 25 February 1890, and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania. I have assumed he is not the David Lingenfelter who served in the 91st Pennsylvania, because (again according to the gedcom's) he is the David Lingenfelter who served in the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry and his widow received a pension based on that service. I assume that his service in the 91st would also be recorded. The age of the David Lingenfelter below also better matches the age of the David who served in the 91st Pennsylvania.

a David Lingenfelter, 45, is living in South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (microfilm series M593, film 1304, page 652 recto = 27 handwritten); he is a laborer, living with John Biddle et al, but no other Lingenfelter's. Could he be my David Lingenfelter?
