He was born in 1818/19 (4 (43 in 1862), 8 (62 in 1870), 9 (74 in 1880)). He was born in Down [?] County, Ireland (4, 8, 9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 July 1862 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (4). He was a private in company G (1, 10-11).

He was discharged at camp near Falmouth, Virginia, on surgeon's certificate of disability on 20 March 1863, by order of General Meade (1, 2 [no date], 3, 4). He was a private, in company G (10-11).

After the war

On 29 [or 27?] July 1863, he unsuccessfully applied for a pension (7).

In 1870, he was living in Upland Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Margaret, daughter Mary, and with Gillen Hamilton (8). He worked in a cotton mill, and owned $150 in personal property (8).

In 1880, he was living in Upland, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Margret and daughter Mary (9). He worked in a cotton mill (9). He had a cataract (perhaps cataracts?), and was blind (9).

He died on 8 February 1881 (7).

In 1890, his widow, Margaret Welsh, was living in Upland, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (5).

On 24 July 1898, his widow, Margaret Welch, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
