John C Zehender

Before the war

He was born in 1827/28 (4 (33 in 1861), 5 (36 in 1870)). He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany (4, 5).

When he enlisted, he was an agent (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and light hair (4).

During the war

He was enlisted prior to enlisting in the 91st (4).

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a corporal on 15 October 1861 (1, 2, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bell (4). He was a corporal in company F (1, 7).

He was promoted on 11 January 1862 (1) or 11 June 1862 (2, 4) from corporal to second sergeant (1, 2, 4).

He was discharged at camp in the field on 14 January 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3, 4). He was a sergeant, in company F (7).

After the war

He may be the John Christian Zehender who died on 7 June 1867 (8).

In 1870, he may have been living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). (Note, however, that two John Zehender's are listed in the Philadelphia city directories.) He was living with Elizabeth Zehender (presumably his wife), and many other people, including three other Zehender's, who may be their children (5). He was a butcher, and owned $10,000 in real estate and $5,000 in personal property (5).

He may be the John G Zehender, 78 years old, who died on 30 March 1911 (6). He died at 3257 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was his daughter Annie E Bidlingmeyer's residence (6).
