A letter of 12 Jan 1799 from Barnstaple, appeared in the Naval Chronicle.- "Yesterday morning was lost in Barnstaple Bay, in a most tremendous gale of wind at N. N. W. the sloop Weazle, Hon. H. Grey, commander : and it is with extreme sorrow I have to say, with the whole crew." Although it was later reported that the purser had survived, and may have been ashore? From the above and subsequent correspondence it would appear that the vessel became embayed and was unable to escape out to sea and went aground.
