I checked the IGI for all births of John BROWNs and son of a William & Isabel
BROWN. I found just one which I now think mght be the right person: JOHN BROWN
, Birth: 01 JAN 1791, Christening: 09 JAN 1791 St. Andrews And St.
Leonards, Fife, Scotland Father: WILLIAM BROWN Mother: ISABEL MILLER

Obviously the surname of the mother does not fit. However, the date fits with
the age on the 1861 census, and the IGI has no marriage of a William BROWN & an
Isabel MILLER. So I wonder whether "MILLER" is a mistranscription of "ELDER".

ST ANDREWS CITIZEN 25th JUNE, 1949
Mr Thomas Waters Brown, who died at 7 Gregory Place, St Andrews on
Tuesday, had during his lifetime an almost unbroken connection with the sea. A
native of St Andrews, he spent his youth sailing in the cargo boats which
traded between Newcastle and ports in France and had an earlier experience of
shipwreck than most when his ship foundered on the French Coast. Through the
kind offices of the Shipwrecked Mariner's Society, however, he was soon home,
and once more equipped for another voyage, everything he has possessed having
gone down to the bottom in the wreck. A few years after his marriage, Mr Brown
decided to return to St Andrews, and turning to the fishing trade, went into
partnership with his father-in-law the late Alexander Cunningham, in whose boat
he had a share. The first World War intervened and in 1914 Mr Brown was once
more on a cargo boat, this time taking coal from Methil to London for use in
the manufacture of munitions. There was little or no defence against aerial
bombardment at this period, and it was a dangerous trip for all concerned. Mr
Brown, however, came through unscathed and when hostilities ceased, returned
again to St Andrews and the fishing trade, which he followed until it decayed.
Latterly he took to caddying at the links, but a little over two years ago he
had a serious illness from which he never fully recovered. Mr Brown, who served
during the last war as an auxiliary coastguard from beginning to end, was 74
years of age. He was on the committee of the Harbour Trust for a number of
years and held the badge of a rocket apparatus life member. He is survived by
his wife, three daughters, three grandsons and one grand-daughter. Two
daughters still reside in St Andrews, while the other is married and lives in
Cupar.

Greenkeeper (probably ONLY greenkeeper) at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club between
1891 and 1905. He seems to have moved on to Edgbaston Golf Club (Birmingham)
and that is the last heard from him here. One of his sons became Professional
at the Nelson Club in New Zealand, a point confirmed in person by the first
historian of this golf club between the Wars.
E.M. Hardie (2004): "My grandmother was married to Lindsay Ross's eldest son
James Warrender Ross. I never knew him or anything about the Ross side of the
family except that his mother had been born in St Andrews. We have a couple of
not very clear photos of JWR from the ?1910s but that is all. I believe he went
to Australia in the late 1920-30s. However when my father died we found a medal
from Warrender Golf Club dated 18 Oct 1884, inscribed Lindsay Ross, which
explains JWR's second name."

From Ken (email Aug 2010): "Lindsay G Ross is listed as a professional golfer
in the 1902 PGA listings. He has a listing at Braid Hills although no specific
years are given it is probably pre 1891 as a son was born in Edinburgh in
1890.His other listed clubs are as follows -:
Sutton Coldfield (1891 - 1905), Droitwich (1905-1910), Edgbaston (1910-1919),
Aberdovy (1919-1924, - from there he is listed as going to Geneva (another son
was appointed professional there)"
