[N1157] Charles took over the photography business in Merthyr Tydfil from his father.
He was a keen producer of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas - see cutting.

John Leslie was the one who called him "The Wastrel" - it is not known why.
Charles' death on the 1 Jan 1957 notified by Ethel Jones (neice) - is this
Ethel Harris (George's daughter)?
Will notes: no will indexed in Somerset House 1957-59

[N1158] Albert Edward was brought up in Merthyr Tydfil. According to Edward Brian
Harris, he ran away from school at the age of 10 as he thought
he had killed a schoolfriend with a penknife.

In Merthyr he worked as a photographer, and then went to the
Slade School of Art. The 1900 Kelly's Directory for South Wales
lists an address for Harris, Albert E as 2, The Avenue, Merthyr
Tydfil.

He went out to India to restore pictures - he knew nothing
about restoration so read it up on the boat out. When he
reached his destination, he found that the Maharajah had been
using the portraits of his ancestors for pistol practice!

He played cricket for the Port of Calcutta, but couldn't stand
the sound of the guns. According to the Calcutta Statesman
newspaper dated 1.9.1927 (reporting his leaving India after 37
years) he had arrived in Bombay in June 1890 and served with
Messrs Johnston and Hoffman as an artist for 6 years, returning
to Calcutta early in 1897 to practice on his own account. The
paper says that he studied at the Cardiff School of Art,
Hatherleys, South Kensington College and the National Gallery.
His early interest apparently was scupture, but he abandoned
this.

He lived in India first at 14 Rowlands Rd., Calcutta, but then
moved to 25/1 Rowlands Rd, Ballygunge, Calcutta before Maria
died. Edward Brian Harris says that he never paid any rent (the
owner lived upstairs) for all the 35 years he lived there, and
he returned to the UK virtually penniless, having sold his
furniture and pictures in order to pay the outstanding rent!
However he did pay for the construction of Lingmathang (cost
700)

In 1919 he was engaged by the Amir of Afghanistan to organise a
School of Art at Kabul, of which he was to be the principal,
but whilst awaiting the firman to enter Afghanistan, news came
announcing the assassination of the Amir.

Diana Harris (Leslie) says that his work-rate was very slow -
quite a perfectionist - Etto (second wife) used to become very
frustrated about it. He was a great enthusiast for Gilbert and
Sullivan and loved Victorian musical evenings.

His first wife was Maria Leonard whom he married in April 1890.
Diana has an anecdote that when he was growing old and senile,
he went to stay with his son Leonard Harris and his wife
Dorice. There on the wall he saw a portrait of his first wife
which he himself had painted. He turned to Dorice and said "and
who is this disagreeable-looking woman?"

Madge Tudor Evans said that he was "the very nicest man" and
far too good for his wife "Ethel treated him like a dog".
Apparently Etto wanted him to die before she did so she could
have some years by herself.

He lived from May 1890 to Autumn 1924 in India, apart from two
half-year holidays.

[N1159] BIRT: We know he was 17 years, 6 months old on the 3rd Jan 1846, which means he was
cf Worldconnect submission by Nick Harris
Cleopas was one of the earliest commercial photographers,
working first in Birmingham and then in Merthyr Tydfil, which
he moved to in 1867.

He was born in Publow, where his grandfather had a tanning
business.
