"In the spring of 1850, the Charles Rice Wagon Train left MO for OR. Family
tradition states there was no trouble with the Indians. Members were:
Charles Rice, Captain
James Rice, George Rice, Charles Rice, his Sons.
Elizabeth Rice, Rebecca Rice, Harriett Rice Powell, his Daughters
Silas Powell, son in law and Harriett & Silas children David and Sarah
Daniel Powell, Silas' brother.
Elizabeth (Lett) Rice Williamston, her one son and 3 daughters.
Two Trail Drivers.
Elizabeth Williamston and two daughters, Arminta and Sarah died of mountain
fever when the train crossed the Blue Mountains in eastern OR. They were
buried beside the trail near La Grande, OR.
On 10/20/1850 they started over the Cascades through Barlow Pass. A snow
storm forced them to leave their wagons and possessions and travel on foot
into the Willamette Valley. The smaller children were carried and provisions
were back packed. After 2 1/2 days they came to the valley where they
reached a settlement. After the weather cleared, the men returned for the
wagons.
Charles filed a donation land claim on 318 acres near Brownsville."
