Family Origin and Deepest Root
The roots of Rege's Prymuszewski family are in Poland. Josephine Barbara Prymuszewski, wife of Wojcieck Zagrodzki, is the most distant ancestor identified, but we do know something about her father. Family tradition says that he was a builder and architect who specialized in apartmenta and churches.
Josephine and Wojcieck met in a small farm village near Plock, which is about 55 mile northwest of Warsaw. The name Prymus (see below) has been found in parish records in the Plock diocese.
The Immigrant Ancestor
Josephine Barbara Prymuszewski, wife of Wojcieck Zagrodzki, is the only known Prymuszewski immigrant. According to family tradition, she arrived in Baltimore at the same time as her two sons Boleslaw (William) and Casimir on December 28, 1913.
The Origin of the Name
The name was originally Prymus but was changed to sound more Polish. The name Prymus probably comes from Latin "primus" meaning first or foremost. A Latin origin does not indicate that the family was not Polish, since Latin-based names were not uncommon among Catholics in Europe. The taking of Latin or Latinized surnames was also somewhat fashionable in early eighteen century Europe.
