Humeston Parks

A plat was published in 1885 showing the location of the city park. The land company claimed that the town failed to comply with stipulations regarding the park and offered to give a tract of similar size two blocks farther east on the south side of Broad St. In time the town won and the park remains in the same location today.

In 1919 a war monument had been placed in the park. It was made of wood by John A. Conner. Later a large boulder was brought in from the country and it still remains in the park.
In 1994 the name City Park was changed to Christopher Street Park honoring the IOWA University basketball star, who was born and raised here. His family later moved to Indianola, IA. and then he went on to be a basketball star for the college. He was killed in an automobile accident in Iowa City.

The RV Park, depot and the old wooden water tower, along with a large army tank are great tourist attractions and have been expanding since 1994. They are located on Highway 65. You can also find them on the Wayne County link.

Humeston New Era - May 21, 1941
A giant boulder was brought in from a road working project southeast of town and unloaded in the Humeston park last Wedneasday to be placed on a concrete foundation to replace the painted wood monument that has stood there these twenty years, more or less.

The American Legion sponsored the move and may have an inscription added.
