Second Generation

At the time of the 1900 US Census, he resided in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at 40 Irving Street. The 1900 Census entry states that Thomas owned his home, yet he is listed as a "boarder" in the household of his brother, Peter Norton. It might be possible that he owned the house, but it might also be that the enumerator entered incorrect information, perhaps for the following line.

He married Helen (UNKNOWN) about 1903. (Helen (UNKNOWN) is #198.) Helen was born in Massachusetts about 1867.

At the time of the 1910 US Census, Thomas and Helen resided in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at 1 Tremont Place, and owned their home under a mortgage. Thomas's occupation: self-employed molded counter manufacturer. The 1910 Census states that Helen had no children still living. The number born seems to be "un" (for unknown?). The same Census states that Helen's mother had been born in Ireland, her father in Finland.

Thomas J. NAUGHTON and Helen (UNKNOWN) had the following family:

child 5 i. Helen3 NAUGHTON (#199) was born in New York about 1905. Helen was adopted. At the time of the 1910 US Census, Helen was attending school. The same Census states that Helen's birth mother was born in Massachusetts, but that her father's place of birth was unknown.

He married Anne M. MCVANN in 1892, after 15 April. (Anne M. MCVANN is #16.) Annie was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland, November 1871. Conflicting evidence states that Annie was born in Ireland, 1873. Annie immigrated in 1886, or perhaps 1889. Annie died in 1948. She was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.

At the time of the 1900 US Census, Peter and Annie resided in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at 40 Irving Street, and were renting their home. Peter's occupation: shoestock (foreman).

They were still renting the same home at the time of the 1910 US Census. Peter's occupation: counter work, counter factory. He was probably working for his brother Thomas.

At the time of the 1920 US Census, after Peter's death, Annie was still renting the same home.

John's death date, from Norton/Beck headstone, may be questionable, as family members recall Florence living for some time with her sister Grace after John's death.

At the time of the 1910 US Census, Florence resided with her parents, and was attending school.
