Mrs. John Esson Passes Away

Resident of this county for forty-five years.

On Saturday morning at 2:00 o'clock at her residence in Brook, Mrs. John Esson passed away after a short illness. While she had been gradually failing for years, her lat and fatal sickness was only a question of a few days. She was the widow of John Esson and came from Illinois with him in 1871 and until 1890 lived on the land where they first settled, only leaving the old home farm to come to Brook. Forty-five years carries one back in the early days of the country when conveniences were few and hardships were many, when neighbors were not so near by mile nor by roads, when the trained nurse and often the doctor came from the friends home across the prairie, when there was no neighboring inn and the latch string was "out" at every house for the wayfarer. It was such a home as this that Mrs. Esson and her husband presided over. It was neighborly kindness and hospitality such as theirs that made the stranger welcome that caused him to stop and cast his lot with them and help in the struggle to build up a new country. Years passed before comfort, ease and modern luxuries came to them. When it did they shared the results of their toil as in their days of adversity. Not a public improvement in the county but what reaped benefit from their prosperity. Mrs. Esson was quiet and unostentatious, leaving to her husband the work for public welfare but willing to have their thrift dispensed with a lavish hand. At his death she refused the burden of wealth, preferring to have her daughter continue the father's work. Age and infirmity had come upon her and she preferred spending her time with her flowers and her books, her relatives and most intimate friends. Her life and that of her husband are indelibly stamped upon this community to which they lived; with her death closes the earthly chapter of a family whose living meant much to this community. The funeral service was held in the Methodist Church and was conducted by the Rev. Woodson assisted by Rev. Snyder. The interment was beside her husband in the Brook cemetery. The active pallbearers were E. E. Hess, Joseph Ade, Coonrad [sic] Kiifner [sic], Bennett Lyons, John R. Hershman and Amos Agate. The escort of honor were Benjamin F. Warr, John B. Foresman, Sr., Fred Merchant, O. P. Merrifield, David Hess, Thorp Beagley, Manroe Sell, and Morris Jones. The relatives from a distance were Elijah and Samuel Esson, brothers-in-law, from Illinois, Mrs. Mary Camblin, sister and her husband from Morocco and Mrs. Eugene Park from Chicago.

Obituary

Emerette Rosaline Park, daughter of Philander and Amelia Park, was born June 30th, 1839, in Mifflin Township, Franklin county, Ohio, in which vicinity she spent her girlhood and young womanhood. She removed to Troy Township, near Joliet, Illinois, when about twenty years of age, where she taught in the district schools for six or seven years. In the year 1866, she was united in marriage with John Esson, of Will Co., Illinois. To this union were born two children, Ida Madge, now Mrs. John Lawrence, and Eva Blanche, who died at the age of nine months. They moved to Washington township, Newton Co., Ind., in the spring of 1871 and broke the ground and placed the first buildings on the land now known as the home farm. In the fall of 1890, they moved to the town of Brook where she resided until the tome of her death which occurred the morning of the 17th of May 1916, aged 76 years, 10 months and 27 days. Her husband departed this life January 17, 1907, since which time from choice she had lived alone near her daughter, Mrs. Lawrence. She united with the Baptist church in the spring of 1876 under the pastorate of Rev. Miller and the ministers who traveled the circuit in those days were always given a hearty welcome in her home. Although in later years she could not take an active part in church work, she was an earnest student of God's word and only recently made mention of the fact that she had read the Bible through twice during the past winter. Only those who were intimately acquainted with Mrs. Esson in her early days know of her sterling worth and kind deeds. She with her good husband were among the pioneer settlers of their community, and few of the new settlers located in the neighborhood without lodging with "Aunt Em and Uncle Jack" for a few nights at least, until they could be comfortably settled in their own homes. In fact Mrs. Esson kept open house most of the time. There was neither sickness or trouble but what they were the first to arrive and lend their assistance in whatever way needed. Mrs. Esson's love for flowers was a passion with her, and even in early days with all her duties on a large farm, her yard and garden was a perfect bower of the choicest blooms from early spring until late fall, which she generously shared with her neighbors and friends. In late years when unable to go among her friends, her flowers and books were her companions and a great source of comfort to her. She was a great reader, and kind providence gave her a splendid eye sight and a keen intellect which she retained to the end. Her thoughts were always pure and no word of gossip ever passed her lips. Her loyalty to her friends was unbounded. In the words of St. Paul - She hath fought a good fight, she had finished her course and has kept her faith. Thenceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give unto her. She leaves to mourn her loss, a daughter, Mrs. John Lawrence, two brothers, Byron and Frank, two sisters, Miss Eunice Park and Mrs. Mary Camblin, and numerous grandchildren, al of whom live in Brook with the exception of Mrs. Camblin, who resides in Morocco.

According to Mark Patterson, a decendant of Emerette Park she was indeed the granddaughter of Amos Park and Sarah Chestnor. She was the daughter of Philander Park.

Emerette Esson stated in the 1910 census that she was the mother of 2 children with 1 still living in 1910. 19 22 27 47
