Introduction

This page is part of the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group Web Site jointly hosted by myself, Ryk Brown, and my research partner, Chuck Speed.  The research presented on this page is not ours alone.  It is the product of all the Fellow Researchers of the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group.  We are indebted to them for their generous contributions.  This page is intended as a place for researchers to freely and cooperatively share our research with each other.  The first-time reader is advised to begin with the introduction found on the Principal Families Page before proceeding on with this page.

The Stewarts in Torrie and Brackland were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran.  Please refer to the Gartnafuaran page for a full introduction.

This branch is being researched by Belinda Dettman and the information below is based almost entirely on Belinda's report, Descent from John Stewart in Brackland, Branch Eight of Gartnafuaran family.  This family is being discussed on our Gartnafuaran Discussion Forum.

The final cadet branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran is identified in Stewarts of the South as going by the name of Clan Stiubhartaich Chireu which means "The Dusky Brown Stewarts".  The author of Stewarts of the South says they got this name because of their "ruddy complexion."  He goes on to describe them as "in general, [they] are not of the first rate, however they can take care of themselves."  Their primary residence was the property of Brackland, nestled in the hills above the town of Callander in Perthshire, Scotland.  Brackland was subdivided into three holdings: Easter, Middle and Wester Brackland.  These are located near the banks of the Keltie Water and some of its tributaries.  Wester Brackland is also found on modern maps with the spelling of Bracklinn which gives us a clue to the likely Gaelic etymology of the name, which probably derives from brec linne, meaning "a speckled mill-dam or channel."  The name probably derives from a mill presumably located near Bracklinn Falls.

The origin of this clan is not fully known.  Stewarts of the South records them as the last cadet branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafaruan.  So we can say with confidence that they descend from the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, but just how is a matter of ongoing debate.

One suggestion is that the Stewarts in Brackland may descend from a natural or younger son of one of the Stewarts of Blairgarry.  Presently, Patrick McAndrew Stewart, 5th of Blairgarry is favoured.  On the assumption that Stewarts of the South has arranged the various cadet lines (relatively) in order of seniority then we can suggest that this branch should descend from a point on the Gartnafuaran tree that is earlier than any of the preceding branches.  This principle seems to have been practiced throughout the accounting of the other branches of Stewarts of the South, though not without error.  As we know that the Stewarts of Glenogle, Branch V, descend from Alexander Stewart, 2nd of Gartnafuaran, then it seems most likely that the Stewarts in Brackland descend from a younger son of Andrew Stewart, 1st of Blairgarry.  The Blairgarry line is accounted for above.

The earliest verifiable ancestor of the Stewarts in Brackland is John Stewart in Wester Brackland (shown below) who presumably married about 1715 to Elizabeth McLaren, although we have no record of their marriage, and began having children in 1715.  John's eldest known son was Patrick who was born in 1717.  Although Patrick is the eldest son we have on record, it is possible that John could have had an older son by Elizabeth or a previous wife who is not accounted for in the Callander OPR.  The Callander OPR only commenced in 1710 and should not be considered complete, especially in its earliest years.  Without knowing for sure exactly when John was married we cannot say with certainty that Patrick was his eldest son.  However, on the assumption that Patrick was John's eldest son then we can suggest that John's father's name was probably Patrick.  If this assumption is correct then Patrick McAndrew Stewart, 5th of Blairgarry is a perfect chronological and onomastic match.  Furthermore the Stewarts of Blairgarry descend from Andrew Stewart, 1st of Gartnafuaran, as we should expect the Stewarts in Brackland to do.

Buchanan of Auchmar in his 1728 genealogy refers to the Stewarts of Blairgarry and says "That family is now (1728) represented by Alexander Stewart [8th] of Gartnafuaroe in Balquhidder parish."  The phrase "represented by" is open to interpretation and is currently being debated by our researchers.  It could mean that the family of Blairgarry had become extinct by 1728, in that there were no surviving male heirs, and the closest living branch (in 1728) was the senior line of Gartnafuaran.  If this is correct then if the Stewarts in Brackland do descend from Blairgarry they would have to do so by means of a natural son, rather than a lawful son, as any lawful son would likely have been eligible to inherit the estate of Blairgarry and continue that line.  "Represented by" could also indicate that the family of Blairgarry fell upon hard times and were forced to sell the estate and sold it back to their Gartnafuaran cousins.  It could also mean that the (lawful) male line of Blairgarry died out and a daughter of Blairgarry married into the main Gartnafuaran line.  However, this would have had to occur in the lifetime of either Alexander Stewart 8th of Gartnafuaran or James Stewart, 9th of Gartnafuaran, and both of these men are recorded as having married Campbells.  We do know that the later main stem of Gartnafuaran did reside at Blairgarry, so it would appear that the estate of Blairgarry did pass back to the main stem of Gartnafuaran by some means.  We know that James Stewart, 9th of Gartnafuaran, was residing in Blairgarry after 1743 when his children's births are recorded there.

To suggest that John Stewart in Wester Brackland may have been born about 1686 as a natural son of Patrick McAndrew Stewart, 5th of Blairgarry, is a promising theory and is consistent with the evidence presently available to us, but it is far from the only possible option.  Research is ongoing.

It is most interesting to note that the estate and seniority of this branch passed to the younger branch.  This is highly unusual and begs an explanation.  Unfortunately we have no knowledge as to why this happened and we can only speculate.  What we can say is that the patriarch, John Stewart resided in Wester Brackland.  His elders sons, Patrick and Donald, and their descendants resided in Torrie.  Some of their descendants immigrated to the West Indies and are alleged to have been very prosperous.  But the farm of Brackland passed to the third son, Walter.  And there too, it passed to Walter's second son James, while Walter's eldest son resided in Bogton (also known as the Boglotts or Lotts of Callander).  Perhaps the farms at Torrie and Boglotts were superior to that of Brackland and thus Brackland got passed down to the younger sons.  Walter's son, James, is listed first in Stewarts of the South.  In most cases elsewhere in Stewarts of the South the first family listed is the senior-most.  This could suggest that the James' branch had risen in prosperity above the others by 1815, or this branch had lost touch with their own ancestry and really had no idea who was most senior, or the author of Stewarts of the South just presumed James was the most senior because he was still residing in Brackland, while the other branches had scattered, or Stewarts of the South is simply in error on the seniority of the descendants of this family.

Stewarts of the South presents this family beginning as follows:

Commonly called "Stuirtaich Chireu" ("The Dusky Brown Stewarts") from their ruddy complexion. These, in general, are not of the first rate, however they can take care of themselves.

1. James Stewart, [a] tenant in Bracklin [in] Callendar [on the] Earl of Moray's property, [which is] the best farm in the farthest east of the parish.  [James] has seven sons.
   1. John, [who] resides with himself.
   2. James [sic s/b Walter], [who is] a minister who got a parish from the Earl of Moray in the North (that of Alloa); the first Stewarts that ever had a presentation from that family.
   3. Archibald, [a] tacksman of ?Drim-losgt (handwriting illegible) [Drumloist in the Braes of Doune], [in] Doune parish.  Rent �120. Earl of Moray's property
   4. James, [a] schoolmaster of Aberfoil. 
   5. two of them are at their education [and are] intended for the learned professions
   6. ditto
   7. and the other under age.
2. Alexander Stewart, his brother, [who is a] tenant in Bracklin. 
   1. [He] has three sons under age.
   2. ditto
   3. ditto

Both [James and Alexander] are in good circumstances.

James Stewart in Brackland has been identified in OPR records and is presented below.  He did have seven children however Stewarts of the South has their names off a bit.  James' actual sons were: Walter, John, Archibald, James, Alexander, Peter, and David.  Stewarts of the South identifies two sons as James.  John is shown below as residing in Easter Brackland with a large family.  It would appear most likely that the first James should be Walter and that Stewarts of the South has the first two sons in reverse order, and that it was Walter who was the minister in Alloa.

Bracklin formerly was rented by twelve tenants.  At present it pays �150 and is well worth �350.  [The farm] will keep about 60 milk cows.  One-half of this farm formerly belonged to the ancient and respectable family of the Dows of Ardnahaw (Ardnandave in Strathyre) of whom no person in that country knows anything of.  This farm is now in the policy of Stirling of Keir.

John Stewart, [a] tenant in the lots of Greenock in the ancient Barony of Callendar, [which] formerly belonged to the family of Perth [and] now [belongs] to a gentleman from Edinburgh of the name of Hunter.  [John] has four sons:

1. two with himself
2. "
3. and two in the West Indies. The one of which made a fortune there
4. "

This barony of Callendar anciently belonged to the Livingston Earl of Callendar before it fell into the hands of the family of [the Earl of] Perth.  The Livingstons were obliged to leave that country for some injustice done to a man that was hanged in that place.  They left voluntarily when they heard of the injustice of his treatment.

Stewarts of the South then continues with the descendants of Donald Stewart in Wester Brackland.  Donald is not identified by name in Stewarts of the South, but Belinda's research with the local OPRs has revealed Donald's name.  Donald was father of:

1. James Stewart, their cousin, [a] tenant in Wester Torrie [in] Port [of Menteith] parish, [of which] one [of the name of] Buchanan [is the] proprietor [of that property].  [James] has four sons:
   1. two with himself
   2. "
   3. and two in the West Indies
   4. "
2. Donald, his brother, who was [a] tenant in the same farm, left four sons,
   1. two of them with his mother
   2. "
   3. one in the West Indies
   4. and one a wright in Stirling.
3. Robert, another of these brothers, [is] in the West Indies, in affluent circumstances and married with a large family.
4. Patrick is in Glengartan (Strathgartney?) in Arasaig mor, [which is] a farm for which he pays �300 or �400 a year [to] Clan Ronald.  [He] has four sons.

The following references from the Appendix to Stewarts of the South cite the members of this family alive and residing in southern Perthshire at the time of authorship, ca. 1815-1820.

Port of Menteith

1. Mr John Stewart, [in] Wester Torry, he says himself [that he is] of the Appin [family], but [I believe he is] of the Combacks of Glenlyon, an industrious man with a good deal of pride, if he could afford it. �20. Buchanan of Torry's Estate, of the family of [Buchanan of] Auchleskine.
2. Mr John Stewart, Tenant in Torry, of the Gartnafuaran family, a young well-doing man, �60, same property (Buchanan of Auchlesikine)
3. Mr James Stewart, his cousin, tenant in same place (Torry), and of the same family (Gartnafuaran), an industrious young man, �60, same property (Buchanan of Auchleskine). There was an active, distinguished character of that [Buchanan] family who signalised himself with the Marquis of Montrose in behalf of the unparalleled Charles I.  His name was Archibald Ruadh Torry [Buchanan] (Archibald Roy Buchanan of Torrie, that is, Red Archibald of Torrie) of the Auchleshie or Bochastel family.

Callander

1. Mr James Stewart, Tenant [in] Easter Bracklend, of the Gartnafuaran family, a very indifferent character, cheap rent �75, Earl of Murray's property, Callander parish
2. Mr Alexander Stewart, his brother, same farm (tenant in Easter Brackland), a rather better character, �75
3. Mr John Stewart, Bogton south from Callander, a brother to the above (Alexander and James), a rather better character, �50, formerly Perth's estate, now [belongs to] Hunter from Edinburgh, an army contractor (not sure if this is a reference to John Stewart or Mr. Hunter), it will soon be in the market again. (Mr Robertson, that is to be married upon Col Stewart [of] Fincastle's daughter, is reported to intend being purchaser of it.)

The following grave inscriptions can be found in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions and pertain to this family.  First from Callander Cemetery:

193       James STEWART, wright (in) Lanrick, 20 MAR 1876, age 87; in memory of (his) wife Mary MACKENZIE, 14 DEC 1844, age 56.

194       John STEWART, late tenant (at) Wester Torrie, died  MAR 1808, age 63, son John 25 JAN 1867, age 78 (and his wife Janet BUCHANAN 24 FEB 1875, age 64, and their son John 11 DEC 1848, age 6 years)  JS 1821 SF

195       by Alexander STUART, in memory of (his) brother Walter, died at Elgin 27 APR 1819, age 23, and brother James (a student) in Divinity died (at) Bracklinn 29 APR 1822, age 25.

196       by ------- STEWART in Bracklinn, in memory of (his) wife) Catharine McQueen 12 OCT 1828, age 62; James STEWART, farmer in Bracklinn died 12 MAY 1837, age 73.

Based on this evidence supplemented with OPR data we present the following accounting of the Stewarts in Brackland:

Possible Origin of John Stewart in Wester Brackland

A newly proposed theory suggested by Belinda Dettman for the ancestry of John Stewart in Wester Brackland gives John's origin as follows:

Rob Duibh Mhor Stewart in Wester Ardchullarie (patriarch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran Branch III) b. ABT 1605 in Gartnafuaran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Alexander STEWART, 5th of Gartnafuaran.  Rob's wife is unknown.  He is suggested as the father of:

1. Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1635 in Wester Ardchullarie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  It is suggested that Alexander died young.
2. Duncan STEWART b: ABT 1640 in Wester Ardchullarie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. 
   1. From whom descends the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran Branch III.
3. Walter STEWART in Kilmadock
   1. Elspett STEWART, bap 23 MAY 1646 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   2. Robert STEWART, bap 17 JUL 1647 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   3. Marie STEWART, bap 13 AUG 1648 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   4. Alexander STEWART, bap 22 DEC 1650 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   5. Johne STEWART, bap 27 JAN 1651 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (twin of Christian).  He is suggested to have married to Helen MacFarlane and had:
      1. Walter STEWART, bap 16 FEB 1678 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. John STEWART, bap AUG 1682 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  He is suggested to be John Stewart in Wester Brackland, below.
      3. Jonet STEWART, bap 16 MAR 1683 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
   6. Christian STEWART bap 27 JAN 1651 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (twin of Johne)

Present Accounting of John Stewart in Wester Brackland

John STEWART , in Wester Brackland, b. ABT 1686 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  John's parents are not known.  Research is ongoing into the exact origins of this branch of the family.  According to Stewarts of the South they are the most junior branch to descend from the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran.  Thus they probably descend from a younger son of Andrew Stewart, 1st of Gartnafuaran.  Based on current evidence the most promising link is to suggest that John Stewart in Wester Brackland may be a younger son or natural son of Patrick McAndrew Stewart, 5th of Blairgarry, however we have no proof of such relationship.  John's eldest (known) son was named Patrick, thus it is likely that John's father's name was Patrick.  John is exactly the right to be a son of Patrick McAndrew and the Blairgarry Stewarts descend from Andrew Stewart, 1st of Gartnafuaran, making any branches that descend from Blairgarry one of the most junior cadets of Gartnafuaran.  However, according to Buchanan of Auchmar's Genealogy, the Stewarts of Blairgarry became extinct after James Stewart, 6th of Blairgarry.  Thus if John is a son of Patrick McAndrew Stewart, 5th of Blairgarry, then he would probably have to be a natural son.  Since the Callander OPR did not commence until 1710 and is likely incomplete in its earliest years, and since we have no record of John's marriage and John's eldest known child was born in 1715, then it's also possible that John could have had previous children either by his known wife or by a previous unknown wife.  In which case we cannot confirm that Patrick was his eldest lawful son and onomastics would not be reliable.  John Stewart in Wester Brackland is presumed to have married firstly ABT 1714 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth MCLAREN b: ABT 1690 in Perthshire, Scotland although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children:

1. Elizabeth STEWART b: 26 MAR 1715 in Easter and Under Bachlan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
2. Patrick STEWART , in Easter Brackland b: ABT 7 APR 1717 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.  The Aberfoyle OPR gives Patrick's mother's name as "___ Stewart".  Patrick married on 31 DEC 1741 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret MCARTHUR b: ABT 25 MAR 1722 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McArthur and Janet Muschet. 
   1. Patrick's descendants are presented below.
3. Janet STEWART b: 10 JUL 1718 in Auchinlach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
4. Donald STEWART , in Wester Brackland b: 23 AUG 1719 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.  Donald married on 15 JUL 1740 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCBEATH b: 24 JUN 1710 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Patrick McBeath and Christian Ferguson.

Walter STEWART , in Wester Brackland b: 12 OCT 1721 in Auchenlarich (Auchenlaich), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Walter married on 26 AUG 1748 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian MCARTHUR b: 7 APR 1732 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McArthur and Janet King.  Christian's sister, Janet McArthur, married Walter's younger half-brother James Stewart in Doune, below.

John Stewart in Wester Brackland married secondly on 15 DEC 1726 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine MCRUER b: ABT 1700 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  They had the following family:

1. James STEWART , in Doune b: 25 JAN 1728 in Wester Brachland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James' mother's name is recorded as Katherine Nickruer at his baptism. James had a posthumous son born on 10 MAR 1772, thus James died sometime in the 9 months preceding.  James married on OCT 1763 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCARTHUR b: ABT 1730 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McArthur and Janet King.  Janet McArthur was the sister of Christian McArthur who married James' elder half-brother Walter Stewart in Wester Brackland (above).  This family is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South nor have they been identified in later records.  It seems likely that they emigrated.  James Stewart and Janet McArthur had the following children:
   1. John STEWART b: ABT 27 OCT 1766 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   2. Peter STEWART b: ABT 4 NOV 1767 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   3. Janet STEWART b: 2 FEB 1770 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   4. James STEWART b: 10 MAR 1772 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
2. Janet STEWART b: 26 FEB 1730 in Wester Brachland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
3. Alexander STEWART , in Brachland b: 4 AUG 1732 in Wester Brachland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  "1753 Augt 21st Alexander Steuart in Brachland Callander Parish had a child in fornication with McIntyre or McLaren in Achra baptized and called Duncan. Donald Steuart in Brachland sponsor for both this child was baptized by Mr. Richardson Minister at Aberfoyle the day the presbytery of Dunblane met and forfeiting a sallary to the schoolmaster." (Recorded in Balquhidder Kirk Session.) Alexander had the following illegitimate child by an unknown MCINTYRE or MCLAREN:
   1. Duncan STEWART b: 21 AUG 1753 in Brachland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan was the natural son of Alexander Stewart in Brackland.  Duncan is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South.  It seems likely that he either died young or emigrated.

Patrick STEWART , in Easter Brackland b: ABT 7 APR 1717 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as the eldest son of John Stewart in Wester Brackland and Elizabeth McLaren.  The Aberfoyle OPR gives Patrick's mother's name as "___ Stewart".  Patrick married on 31 DEC 1741 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret MCARTHUR b: ABT 25 MAR 1722 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McArthur and Janet Muschet.  Patrick and Margaret had the following family:

1. John STEWART , in Wester Torrie b: 23 MAR 1744 in Easter Brakland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  At their marriage, John Stewart is described being from Kilmadock parish and Sara Ferguson from Callander parish. John's death is recorded in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions in Callander Cemeter adjacent to his Brackland cousins: "194 John STEWART, late tenant (at) Wester Torrie, died MAR 1808, age 63, son John 25 JAN 1867, age 78 (and his wife Janet BUCHANAN 24 FEB 1875, age 64, and their son John 11 DEC 1848, age 6 years) JS 1821 SF." The initials "JS & SF" would refer to John Stewart and Sara Ferguson. The rest of this family has not been found in later records. They may have emigrated.  John married on 27 AND 30 APR 1782 in Kilmadock and Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Sara FERGUSON b: 26 JUL 1761 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John Ferguson and Barbara Campbell, with John described as being from Kilmadock parish and Sara Ferguson from Callander parish.  They had the following children:
   1. Peter STEWART b: ABT 23 MAR 1783 in Wester Torry, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter presumably died young prior to the birth of his same-named brother in 1792.
   2. Barbara STEWART b: ABT 20 FEB 1785 in Wester Torry, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
   3. John STEWART , in Torry b: ABT 25 MAR 1787 in Wester Torry, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is described in the Appendix of Stewarts of the South as: "Mr John Stewart, Tenant in Torry, of the Gartnafuaran family, a young well-doing man, �60, same property (Buchanan of Auchlesikine)."  John is mentioned in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions, buried with his wife and parents in Callander cemetery: "194 John STEWART, late tenant (at) Wester Torrie, died MAR 1808, age 63, son John 25 JAN 1867, age 78 (and his wife Janet BUCHANAN 24 FEB 1875, age 64, and their son John 11 DEC 1848, age 6 years) JS 1821 SF."  John may be the John Stewart found in 1841 living at Callander #1, age 50, employed as a turner, residing with Janet Stewart, age 50 (sister?), and Janet Stewart, age 20 (sic 30?, wife?) and William Stewart, age 15 (unknown).  John married on 15 DEC 1840 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet BUCHANAN b: 1811 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  They had the following children:
      1. John STEWART b: 1 APR 1842 in Town of Callander, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  John died as a child and is buried in Callander cemetery: 194 John STEWART, late tenant (at) Wester Torrie, died MAR 1808, age 63, son John 25 JAN 1867, age 78 (and his wife Janet BUCHANAN 24 FEB 1875, age 64, and their son John 11 DEC 1848, age 6 years) JS 1821 SF.  Mary is not found in any census records and is presumed to have died in infancy.
      2. Mary STEWART b: 1845 in Town of Callander, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

It is not confirmed that this John is a son of John Stewart in Bogton. However, this John is found in census and OPR records having children in Lotts of Callander (i.e. Boglot or Bogton). This John is also a perfect chronological and onomastic match to be the second son of John Stewart in Bogton. Walter STEWART b: 2 JAN 1791 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Walter was a student of Divinity who had completed his studies, been licensed to preach, been presented to a congregation, and tragically died only a week before he was due to be ordained.  Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: "James [sic "Walter"], [who is] a minister who got a parish from the Earl of Moray in the North (that of Alloa) [sic "Alves"]; the first Stewarts that ever had a presentation from that family."  The confusion in Stewarts of the South between Walter and James arises because Walter's brother James was also a student of Divinity who also died prior to ordination.  Walter is described in the Fasti Ecclesia for Alves parish in the presbytery of Elgin as follows: "Walter Stuart, licensed by the Presbytery of Dunblane, a probationer resident in Edinburgh; was presented by Francis, Earl of Moray, before 3rd Nov. 1818.  He died at Elgin, 27th April 1819, his ordination having been fixed for 6th May."  Walter's burial is recorded in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions in Callander cemetery: "195 by Alexander STUART, in memory of (his) brother Walter, died at Elgin 27 APR 1819, age 23, and brother James (a student) in Divinity died (at) Bracklinn 29 APR 1822, age 25."

However, Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions indicates that James was also (or subsequently) a student of Divinity.  James' burial is recorded in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions in Callander cemetery: "195 by Alexander STUART, in memory of (his) brother Walter, died at Elgin 27 APR 1819, age 23, and brother James (a student) in Divinity died (at) Bracklinn 29 APR 1822, age 25."
   6. Alexander STEWART b: 23 MAR 1801 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as one of James' two younger sons who were "at their education [and are] intended for the learned professions."  It is believed that Alexander never married.  He died ABT 1852 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
   7. Katherine STEWART b: 1 MAR 1803 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  In 1851, Katherine was residing with her brother David's family. It is presumed that she never married.
   8. Peter STEWART b: 28 MAR 1805 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as one of James' two younger sons who were "at their education [and are] intended for the learned professions."  He has not been found in Scottish census records.
   9. David STEWART b: 11 MAR 1810 in Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland  Baptism date not given in OPR. David is described in Stewarts of the South as a son "under age". In 1851 David has his sister Catherine (b 1803 in Callander) and his nephew Walter (b 1834 in Kilmadock, son of Archibald) residing with him and his family. It would appear that David followed in his brother Archibald's footsteps initially and was employed in 1851 as a Grocer in Kinnoul. However in 1861 he had returned to his family roots of farming and was maintaining a farm in Mains of Huntingtown, Tibbermore, Perthshire, Scotland and employing 5 men.  In 1851 David's sister Katherine and nephew Walter Stewart were residing with them confirming the correct identification of this family.  David married on 1 AND 2 MAR 1840 in Kinnoul and Perth, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian FORRESTER b: 17 APR 1803 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of David Forrester and Janet Young.  David and Christian had the following children:
      1. David Henry STEWART b: 20 JUL 1842 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. David was employed with his father.
      2. Catherine Jane STEWART b: 6 AUG 1845 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.  Catherine is not found with her parents in 1851 or 1861 and is presumed to have died young.
5. Janet STEWART b: 21 OCT 1759 in Wester Brakland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
6. Alexander STEWART , in Easter Brackland b: 23 MAR 1761 in Wester Brakland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Alexander Stewart, his brother, [who is a] tenant in Bracklin. [He] has three sons under age." Alexander is described in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South as: "Mr Alexander Stewart, his [James'] brother, same farm (tenant in Easter Brackland), a rather better character, �75." Alexander is listed in Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions for Callander Cemetery: "224 1851 Francis STEWART, farmer (in) Brackland, in memory of (his) mother Mary AITKEN, 17 FEB 1843, age 75; brother James 5 JUN 1847, Alexander STEWART 11 OCT 1851, age (20 or 90)." Baptismal records can be found for only one of Alexander's children. Alexander's son, Francis, is found in census records. There is a gap where his first son should be, thus Walter is suggested as the name of his first son. Walter has not been found in census records.  Alexander married on 17 MAR 1805 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret AITKIN b: ABT 1775 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  They had the following children:
   1. Walter STEWART, b. ABT 1806 in Easter Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  There is no record of Alexander's birth, however Stewarts of the South says that Walter's father, Alexander, had three sons under age at the time of authorship (ca. 1815-1820).  Alexander would certainly have named his first son Walter.  Walter has not been found in census records.  The fact that his younger brother, Francis, appears to have inherited the farm would suggest that Walter died young.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
