SOUTHALL
Henry Southall, of Charles City County, Va., died in 1795. He was a member of the Committee of Observation {Footnote #14 -- William & Mary Quar., Vol. v, p. 253} of that county, December 17, 1774.
His son John married Susan Hardyman, the daughter of Littlebury and Elizabeth (Eppes) Hardyman. She was the ward of the first Governor Tyler, of Virginia, and lived at the executive mansion in Richmond during his administration. She is said to have been a most beautiful and brilliant woman, and the tradition that Governor Tyler wooed and lost her, is sustained by a poem which he wrote, an acrostic to her name. Her brother, Colonel Stith Hardyman, married Rachel Tyler, a sister of the Governor. John and Susan (Hardyman) Southall died a few years after their marriage, leaving two sons, Norborne and Albert. They were adopted and reared by Governor Tyler's son, John Tyler, who was President of the United States.
The elder son, Norborne, married Mary, the daughter of Chislen and Tabitha (New) Morris.
Their daughter Anastia, married John Eldridge Clarke, whose daughter, Elizabeth Southall, married Douglas H. Gordon, Jr.
