The term bounty land is somewhat self-explanatory. Tracts of land were given outright by the states, and later by the federal government as partial compensation(or "bounty") for service in times of military conflict. Such bounty was also occasionally used by the government to incent men to serve in war or conflicts. Bounty land warrants were issued from the colonial period until 1858, when the program was discontinued, and five years later, in 1863, the rights to locate and take possession of bounty lands ceased.

There were a number of different acts, over an 80 year period, which provided for the issuance of bounty land warrants. One of the earliest was the Congressional Act of 16 September 1776, which was an inducement to join the Continental Army, and which provided from 100 to 500 acres, and was dependent on the rank attained while in the Army. In later wars, other acts provided for different types of warrants for enlisted men and officers.

The great bulk of early bounty land at the time of the Revolution was in Virginia, as it existed in colonial times. Since Virginia provided the great bulk of fighting men in the Revolution, the first bounty lands were to be located between the Mississippi, Ohio and Green Rivers in what is now Kentucky. However, this area did not provide enough land, and the Virginia Military Tract was established, which was in what is now the state of Ohio. Continental Army soldiers from Virginia were the only group allowed to settle in the Ohio area, while state soldiers were to use the lands in Kentucky.

We must remember that bounty lands were given by both the state and federal governments. As might be expected, state bounty lands were almost always within the state lands governed by that state, while federal bounty lands were in specified districts and some federal land states. The Congressional Military Tract was established in 1796 in Ohio, and was set up in five-square-mile townships, rather than the usual six mile arrangement. A quarter-township(4000 acres) was the minimum that could be purchased or "redeemed". Federal bounty land warrants were normally for only 160 acres, however, which worked a hardship for individual claimants, causing them to have to band together as groups in order to obtain such high acreage. By 1800, parcels holding as little as 100 acres were being offered.

The War of 1812 saw the bounty land process offered again as an inducement to bring men into the military. Congress created three new military districts to handle the future redemptions of new soldiers. One was in Illinois, one in Michigan and one in present-day Arkansas(then Louisiana). However, lands in Missouri were later substituted for those in Michigan, due to the undesirable nature of the land in Michigan that had been set aside for this purpose. Other later acts of Congress, until 1855, continued to address the needs of soldiers wishing to redeem their bounty land warrants and efforts continued to try to provide suitable land area for these soldiers.

What records are available to the genealogist who is trying to determine if an ancestor received a bounty land warrant, and if so, what might be found in the records? The most comprehensive and complete record of such warrants is contained in the National Archives in Record Group 15, Federal Bounty Land Applications. The records contained in this group range in time from the Revolution to the year 1917. Pension files, as well as bounty land records, are contained in this group. Bounty land applications for the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War are in this group, and there are some other case files covering the period 1814-1856. A tragic fire some years ago destroyed thousands of bounty land warrant application for the years from 1789 to 1800. If your ancestor applied in this period for bounty land, the original documents may be lost, although some abstract information still exists on these earliest applications. There are also registers for bounty land warrants and for claims which run up until 1912. Although the ability to claim bounty land legally was stopped in 1863, there were civil suits and other litigation which caused some lands to be granted as late as 1912. Other important research references include the Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications in the National Archives, which was prepared by the National Genealogical Society, as well as the very useful and popular Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files by Virgil White.

When looking for state bounty land warrants associated with the State of Virginia(where, as noted earlier, the greatest bulk of these will be found), the genealogist should make use of Record Group 49 in the National Archives, which has about 16 different components contained within it, such as the warrants issued under each act, treasury certificates, exchange certificates, scrip records, and others. The term "scrip" basically means the issuance of paper "scrip" certificates that could be used in any land office, and were exchanged for Virginia military bounty land warrants.

Another valuable reference work is the Federal Land Series by Clifford Neal Smith. There are also numerous compilations that are now available that list claimants by land office. There was a land office established for each federal district, and, as the population grew, the districts were subdivided and more land offices were established to handle the overflow.

It is interesting note that, insofar as Revolutionary War bounty land claims are concerned, the majority of these were redeemed, except for Ohio, in Iowa, followed by Wisconsin. When searching for bounty land in Ohio, the Index for Federal Land Entries, circa 1802-1849, published by the Ohio Historical Society is often useful, although the Symmes Purchase, the Connecticut Western Reserve and the Firelands are not included.

In sum, the business of bounty land became a very large enterprise in the United States for nearly a century. Although warrants could be assigned by the original applicants, the original applicant was required to apply for the warrant before assignment could occur. There were firms established for the sole purpose of handling bounty land warrants for applicants.

The genealogist should also be aware that there is some bounty land warrant information available in the form of Canadian Refugee Warrants and Canadian Volunteer Warrants, which cover those Canadians who were "refugees" from Canada and assisted the American efforts during the Revolution, and those Canadian volunteers who served during the War of 1812. These records are held by the National Archives. Of the two types, the Volunteer Warrants generally provide more information.

At a County Court held for said County the Court house in the Town of Versailles on Monday the 7th day of January 1833

It was proved to the satisfaction of the Court before Samuel Berry, John Steele, William Woolridge, Thomas McAshford and Barnet Gildner, Justices Sitting as a Court, by the testimony of William B. Wallace the credibility of whom is duly certified who was himself an officer in the Revolutionary War that William Long entered the service of the Revolution in the Second Virginia Regiment, a State establishment in the year 1776 as Captain thereof and continued as such therein until the end of the war and was a supernumerary officer, and entitled to commutation as half pay for life and that said William Long resided in Greenbriar County State of Virginia at the time of the aforesaid service and up to 1786 the last time that said Wallace saw him, and that the said Wallace had been informed and believed said Long moved to Cumberland County Kentucky. And it was also proved to the satisfaction of the Court, by the testimony of John Beard and James Cowan, the credibility of both of whom are duly certified, that said Long did move from the State of Virginia Greenbriar County in the year 1803 to Cumberland County Kentucky and that the said Long was a neighbor and acquaintance of them the said Beard and Cowan and that Long continued to reside in said county until the 26th day of August 1814 on which day he died and always bore the name of Captain Long, and was universally believed to have served as such in the Revolution, that said Beard and Cowan had both lived ever since 1800 in said County of Cumberland as had said Long, and that said Long if he had been living in 1832 he would have been seventy seven years of age, that they were both sixty years old in 1832 and that said Long died intestate and left the following children and heirs at law. Names of the males now living Strother Long, John Long, Thomas Long, George Long, Arthur Long. That there was his daughter named Polly Long who intermarried with Saunder Brown and that they still live together in matrimony, Peggy Long who intermarried with Thomas Cowan and are still living together in matrimony and that there are two more males, William Long who married in his lifetime and left a wife and children living in Mercer County Kentucky at his death, also Lewis Long who intermarried and left at his death three children now living in Cumberland County Kentucky, named Patsy Long, Betsey Long and William Long of whom Polly Frogge is the guardian, that George, Arthur, and Thomas Long are now living in the State of Alabama Jackson County, the said John Long in the Territory of Arkansas, that all the others accept said William's children live in Cumberland County Kentucky, and that said William Long's widow died in a few years after he died. Which ordered to be certified to all whom it may concern.

Sorry! Monroe County is in West Virginia. This is were William Lewis lived (Sweet Springs). I think I said Thomas before, just goes to show what can happen if you don't have your records in front of you. I got mixed up because Wm. chose Thomas as one of his guardians.

I have been investigating the Wm. Longs in Greenbrier County on and off for several years. It appears three different Wm. Longs lived in the county from circa 1780 to circa 1836; when, it appears, my Wm. Long left the county. He died in Peoria County, Illinois, circa 1853. The 1850 census shows his age 76 and born in Virginia.

My first thought was all three were the same person. The investigation proved otherwise.

The first record for a Wm. Long in Greenbrier is on Aug. 21, 1783 when he serves on a jury. This could be Capt. Wm. Long. A deed dated Oct. 1785 from Long to Andrew Donnally for a lot in Lewisburg "hereon I now live" is in Deed Book 1 pg. 78-79. The property was used as security for a loan of 45 pounds. On June 27, 1797 Charles Donnally, administrator of Andrew Donnally deceased, took Long to court were he was ordered to pay "3 pounds with interest from 16 Aug. 1783."

On July 20, 1786 he appoints John Atkinson, power of attorney, to "sell all his lands and lots in and near the town of Staunton which he claimed as heir at law of his father William Long, deceased..." The deed is for part of lot #2. The first of these is in Chalkley, Vol. 3, pg. 578. He doesn't give the date. It was Oct. 17, 1786. I have a typed copy of this and other deeds.

The important point is this is a town lot and obtained by Capt. Long's father, William, from Wm. Beverley on February 20, 1756. (Chalkley, Vol. 3, pg. 341-342). His will makes it clear he owned property in Staunton and Jackson's River. I take this to be the Mill Tract. He names his wife, Margaret and "beloved Brothers Thomas Lewis and Charles Lewis to be my Executors to my Estate." I have a copy of the will and his estate appraisal.

In Greenbrier County, on Dec. 4, 1786, he received a deed for 364 acres by survey dated April 18, 1780. Deed Book 1, pg. 255. He sold the land on Aug. 22, 1787. Elizabeth signed the deed with her X.

In Augusta County, on July 19, 1788, a William Long of Greenbrier, sold 20 acres; the deed saying "eldest son and heir of William Long, deceased..." This is Capt. Wm. Long, but the language gives the impression of others. This deed is not in Chalkley, although it is in Deed Book 26 on pg. 215, 216, & 217. Chalkley, Vol. 3 page 584, jumps from deed book pg. 209 to 219!! Chalkley has several errors, it was an exhausting undertaking, and it is best to look at the original record when possible. It goes on to say "it being part of a tract known by the name of ye Mill Tract which was conveyed to the said William Long, deceased by lease for the term of ninety six years bearing date the 20th day of February, 1756 from William Beverly, Esq., and is bounded as follows, Viz: by the lines of a tract of land formerly sold to the said Bowyer and the lines of another piece sold said Bowyer by John Atkinson, my attorney, and the line of another piece of land sold by my said attorney to Michael Bowyer and the lines of another piece of land I leased to John Bosand and then sold to William Crow of Botetourt County..."

You will note, this 1756 lease from Beverly to Long, is in Chalkley, Vol. 3, page 341-342.

The last record I have on him in Greenbrier County is dated June 27, 1798. (Deed Book 2, pg. 12-13). Here he is appointing Andrew and Samuel Moore power of attorney "to receive from the Auditor of Public Accounts whatever warrants on the Treasury ... due to me for my services as Captain in the Second Virginia State regiment..."

This is the only record in Greenbrier County of his Revolutionary War service, but I believe enough evidence to connect him to the William Long that died in 1814 in Cumberland County, Kentucky.

I had in my records that he married Elizabeth Calloway, but scratched it out. I found something that told me this was not correct, but can't say now what it was.

I believe the record is very clear that Margaret Lewis married William Crow after the death of William Long. Have you seen Irvin Frazier's "The Family of John Lewis, Pioneer?" While I don't agree with his report about William Long, I believe he was correct concerning William Crow.

You will remember I mentioned having a copy of Wm. Long's will (1760) and estate appraisal. The list of the settlement, dated Aug. 19, 1773, says "Paid Wm. Crow for boarding, schooling and clothing William Long nine years." The amount was 70 pounds. Capt. Long chose Thomas and Charles his guardians in Nov. 1770. It appears Wm. Crow was being paid for the period 1761-1770. This seems to indicate that Margaret Lewis Long married Wm. Crow shortly after the death of her
husband Wm. Long.

Information about Martha Long.

Martha married John Edward Carroll, son of John Harrison Carroll and Rebecca Larimore, on 17 May 1840. John was born on 15 Feb 1820 in East Tennessee, died on 2 Dec 1901 in Murray, Cass County, Nebraska at age 81, and was buried in Lewiston Cemetery, Murray, Cass County, Nebraska.

General Notes: John Carroll, My great great grandfather was a farmer, raised in Tennessee, but moved to Missouri in the early forties, Stayed there a few years and then going to Iowa, where he opened up a number of different farms. In 1855 he again moved, going to Nebraska, where he acquired possession of fourteen hundred acres of fine farming land. At this time the Indians thereabouts were very troublesome, and the settlers were frequently constrained to band together for mutual protection, but Mr Carroll fortunately came out unscathed from his numerous encounters with them and lived to a good old age, he died in 1901.

Information sent to me by D'Rollin Carrell on 4/27/1990 from records from "Old family Bible" is as follows: "This certifies that the rite of Holy Matrimony was celebrated between John Carrell of Andrew County, Mo. and Margaret E Smith of the same county on November the 6, 1846 at 11 o'clock by the Rev Joseph L Cannon. Early days in Nebraska
Written by F.M.Young Jr June 1904

"A STORY OF PIONEERS"

March 4, 1855, William Young and family crossed the Missouri river in a flat boat, landing at Kensosha, Nebraska. The town at that time contained one log building used as a store, occupied by a man named White; besides this there was a small shanty made of rough boards and occupied by George Winters and family, who kindly gave us shelter for the night. Although somewhat crowded, we were comfortable March 5 the settlers near here who were our neighbors in Iowa came to help us move to our claim about six miles northwest of Kenosha, where my father had located in November, 1854. Those settlers who came to help us move lived from two to three miles northwest of Kenosha; they were Rev. Abraham Towner and three sons, Harvey McGowan , William and Peter Ashley. When the wagons were loaded we took our way across the prairie. Myself, then a lad of fourteen years, and Peter Ashley and Mr. Towner's boys of my age drove the cattle and sheep. We passed but one house on our way, a hewed log house south of Rock Creek occupied by William Davis and family. As we came in sight of the house the family all came out, waving their hats and handkerchiefs and hallooed "hurrah for Nebraska." About two p.m . we arrived at our future home. Having no house built we unloaded in the woods and stretched a tent and cooked and ate dinner, after which our friends, with hearty handshakes and man y good wishes for our welfare and prosperity, departed for their homes. From that time on the longest period my father was away from that place at one time until he died April 25, 1899 , was fourteen days. Part of his original claim at that time is my home now, June 1904. As soon as possible we went to cutting logs and soon had enough cut to build a small house, but did not get it ready to move into until about April first. During the time we were living in the tent we had a snowfall of six inches, which soon went away. There were three families living within three-quarters of a mile of us in houses built of round logs with split chunks drive n in the cracks and then daubed with mud to keep the cold out. They were John Clemmons, Abel Crabtree and Joseph Tousignont. Two miles to the south were two more families, and at the mouth of Rock Creek lived Benedict Spiers and son Gus and son in law, William Frans. Just nort h of them lived three families of Murrays. As spring came on the work of making a new farm be gan. My father made that year what is called a sod and ditch fence around fifty six acres and got all the prairie inside broke out and raised a fair crop of sod corn. Some time in April of that year about 500 Indians, I think they were Otoes, camped on the creek half a mile south of us, but as they were friendly no one was harmed. The only Indian scare we ever had was one Sunday when their dog killed a hog for Mr. Clemmons. He shot the dog, and it came near getting him into trouble with them.

FIRST WEDDING

About the middle of March occurred the first wedding in the neighborhood and said to be the first in the county. The contracting parties were Vincent Faught and Christina Clemmons . When they took their seats Levi Churchill and Rebecca Clemmons rose and told the preacher to marry them, which he did. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Abraham Towner of the Methodist church.

FIRST DEATH

Two days after this wedding, John Clemmons, Sr., who lived with his son John died. Thus the first wedding and the first death in the neighborhood occurred at the same house within two days.

As spring opened other families came and settled, among them the widow Young, a mile and a quarter away; Lewis Young, two and a half miles; John Carroll, three miles; W.R. Ellington, three and a half miles. As summer of 1855 passed away, every few days a new settler would locate within a few miles of us. Considerable prairie was broken that year and nearly all raised corn enough to winter their stock. In January and February, 1856, my father cut logs fo a double log house, and in March hewed them. In April the neighbors were invited and the building erected in one day. This was the first hewed log house in the neighborhood. Owing to the busy season, however, it was not completed until fall. We then hauled stone and built a double fireplace and moved into the house November 30, 1856. The next day, December 1, it began to snow and continued snowing and blowing for three days. This has proved to be the greatest snow storm in the history of Nebraska up to the present date. It was nothing unusual to see a drift twenty feet deep in the hollows, where it blew off the higher ground. On this a crust was formed and teams could travel on top of the snow the country over. During the summer of 1856 considerable trouble was caused by some lawless men coming in and jumping claims held by the settlers. this caused the organization of a "Claim Club" to settle disputes, and protect the actual settler. One Lewis Johnson and his two sons and a few of his kin that were a terror to the neighborhood in March, 1857, with old man Kelly and his son Tom , were arrested by the committee and for some cause were held as prisoners. At night they were escorted over the river, and were never seen again. It has been a mystery to the majority of the people ever since as to what became of them, but it was generally supposed they were heavily weighted and put in the river. After that times were quiet in regard to claim jumping . In the summer of 1857 Miss Mary Stocking taught a subscription school in one room of my fat her's house. In 1856 the government survey of this county was made; then came the entry of the land. Money was scarce and a great many were obliged to borrow money to make the entry. Interest became very high, some paying 40 and some as high as 60 per cent interest. The result was that a great many were never able to pay out on their land, and it went into the hands of the money lender. Some time before this the town site of Plattsmouth had been laid out and the county seat located there, it being quite a trading point. Also the town of Rock Bluffs, three miles and half southeast of us, was quite a lively town.

FIRST COUNTY FAIR

In the fall of 1857 the first county fair was held at Rock Bluffs, and the people of those days thought it a grand success.

In the summer of 1858 William Young and Sam Buster bought the first reaper that was in the neighborhood, a stiff bar hand rake McCormich. We could cut about twelve acres per day, and I did the most of the raking off. Then the old cradle was laid away and people came for miles around to see it work. In 1860 there was quite an emigration to the gold fields of Colorado, also a great deal of freight hauled there on wagons, and we all know what happened in 1861. Thus I have given, to the best of my memory, the most important events from 1856 to 1861.

OBITUARY

Edward B Carrell

Edward B Carrell died suddenly in Bickleton, Monday, June 17th, of heart failure, aged 72 years. Mr. Carrell was taken ill a few weeks ago, caused probably by over-exertions, and apparently was slowly recovering his strength. Monday morning, he said, he was feeling better and made up his mind to walk down town, and see Dr. Brokman about signing some pension papers. He got as far as the hotel and stopped on the porch to rest. Mr. Emmet Wriston offered to go for Dr. Brockman, and have the papers signed there, but Mr Carrell thought if he had some liniment, he had been using for neuralgia, he would be better. Mr. Edmond Gleason procured this and went to call the Doctor. Before his return, Mr. Carrell quietly passed away in the chair. The body was taken to his home. The funeral took place at 11:00 O'clock Wednesday, the Rev C.W. Johnson conducting the services in the Methodist Church. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased. Interment was in the Oddfellows Cemetery. Edward B. Carrell was born in Kentucky in 1840. In early life, he moved with his parents to Missouri, thense to Iowa, where he remained until 15 years old, later going to Nebraska. He was married in 1861 to Rebecca Gray, To this union, 14 children were born, six of whom with their mother are dead. Mr. Carrell enlisted in the army in 1864. He came to Bickleton a few years ago, and was married October 18, 1910 to Mrs Mary M. Jordan ( Worley).

During WW II, he managed a grocery store for Robert Lince (Jim's Market) while Robert Lince was in the war. Clyde later owned a grocery of his own, Clyde's Market, in Selah Washington, which Robert Lince purchased from Clyde several years later.

Clyde was Selah City Clerk for a number of years and served on the Selah City Council from 1953 to 1972. CONLEY RETIRES FROM FIRE DISTRICT #2

It is very frequently the people behind the scenes, those that just keep things moving , are the silent majority that really gets things done, quietly and with persistence. Clyde Conley is one of those people. Clyde Conley retired from the position of Secretary of Fire District #2, Dec. 31, 1990, but his actual retirement date was February of 1989. On the date of his retirement in February of 1989, he was asked to stay on for the sake of continuity, so he did. Upon his retirement, he had spent 34 years as the secretary of Fire District #2. While doing this public Job, Conley was also serving as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure, Conley had to prepare minutes of each meeting and see to it that copies of the minutes went to each of the three fire commissioners, a job that entailed a large amount of detail and bookkeeping. Conley also had to keep fire commissioners informed of previous matters that would have an influence on the decisions that they were making. He was responsible for having the paperwork and accounting ready for auditors and he also had to be aware of annexations and annexation policies and how they would affect the workings of the fire district Fire Chief, John Soden, recalls that Conley never missed a meeting. "He was always attentive, and kept good minutes," Soden said. "He showed a definite concern and interest for the people of Fire District #2." Throughout Conley's time as the secretary, fire district grew . It was incorporated with the City of Selah on Sept 26, 1966, and later incorporations included East Selah, Lower Wenas and Upper Wenas. Each time a new area of responsibility was added , Conley's responsibilities grew. Conley had to be aware of the various types of roads and whether access of specific types of fire fighting vehicles would be possible. All problems had to be anticipated. When Conley started as the secretary, the three fire commissioners were Axel Samuelson, Ed Brown and William Dowdy. Clyde Conley is now (1991) 85 years old, and can, at last, turn the wheel over to someone else. Carl North, firefighter and high-school teacher, is the new secretary of Fire District #2. Conley lives in retirement in Selah. (Source : Yakima Herald, 1991)

GETS BEAR STORY OUT OF DEER HUNT

Clyde Conley shot a nice two-point buck far up in the Wenas on Sunday and he almost got a bear in what he terms the hard way, The bear, probably frightened by hunters, came tearing down the ridge on which Clyde was walking. There was not much room to pass so Clyde let out a husky yell and the bear swerved to the side. About that time Larry Tyrrell got in a good shot and bruin rolled to the bottom of the small canyon and two more shots failed to stop him. Clyde sheepishly reported that Bobby Dubuque, who was in the party, also ran. (Selah news paper, sometime in the 1940's)

13 Feb 1936 , Zillah, Yakima, Washington
The Goldendale Sentinel, Goldendale, WA., February 13, 1936, page 8
"Local News"
M.O. Jordan, 42, of Zillah, a resident of Bickleton up to ten years ago was struck and instantly killed last Monday
on the highway near the Zillah school. The car dragged Jordan's body 40 feet and ran over him after striking him
32 feet from the edge of the pavement, breaking the victim's neck and badly mutilating the body. Andrew
Heintzman, 26, alleged driver of the car, and A.C. Mehlin, 41, a passenger, both of Yakima, were placed in the
county jail on open charges.
Heintzman said he was driving the car to Sunnyside for Mehlin. The sedan skidded and ran off a highway while
traveling about 50 miles an hour. Heintzman swerved the car to avoid hitting the pedestrians, but swung it back
again to avoid tipping over. Mehlin had been drinking, the officer said, but Heintzman had not. Jordan is survived
by a wife and six children and a number of relatives, most of whom reside in Bickleton. Mrs. R.M. Spoon, of
Goldendale, is a cousin
JORDAN, PIONEER RESIDENT OF BICKLETON SECTION, KILLED
The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., February 14, 1936, page 1
M.O. Jordan, a pioneer of the Bickleton section, and father of six minor children, was killed instantly Monday
afternoon of last week, as he was returning home from work on the Zillah high school gymnasium construction
job. He and two companions had crossed the highway when he was struck down by an automobile belonging to
Andrew Heintzman and Arthur Mehlin, both of Yakima. When hit Jordan was about 32 feet from the pavement in
a vacant lot. After striking Jordan the car plunged on, breaking off a concrete post at the rear of a service station
lot and then smashing into a car on the hoist at the service station.
Mr. Jordan is survived by his widow and six children: Irene, Uldine, Lillian, Leona, Harold and Cecil; a brother,
Cecil of Seattle, and a cousin in Yakima. The family formerly lived in the Bickleton community where Mr. Jordan
was born. He is a cousin to Mrs. R.M. Spoon of Goldendale. He moved to Zillah about 10 years ago.
Mr. Jordan was struck by the right front founder and head light, thrown up over the hood and fender and carried
along on the car until it struck the parked car on the service station hoist. The body was thrown to the ground by
the crash, broken, mashed and lifeless.
Mehlin, owner of the car which hit Jordan, is the local manager of the Fletcher Oil Co. at Zillah. He was an
occupant of the car, but was not driving at the time. He was, according to the witnesses, dead drunk, and was
lodged in the Zillah town jail.
In commenting on the case the Zillah Mirror said:
"That poor man who suffered such an awful death Monday afternoon was a victim of slaughter on the highways.
He was where he had every right to be \emdash where no automobile driver had any business to take his car. The fact
that the spot where Mr. Jordan was killed is usually filled with schoolchildren at the time of day makes the
reflection of the deed all the more horrible. Only the fact that the public school was closed earlier than usual,
accounts for the automobile driver's killing only one man instead of a man and a number of children."
Charges of manslaughter were filed in superior court this week against the man as a result of the death of Jordan.
Preliminary to starting a damage action to recover for the death of her husband, Mrs. Treva Jordan of Zillah,
widow of Mr. Jordan, has petitioned the superior court to appoint her administratix of husband's estate. Mrs.
Jordan asked that she be named administratix for the purpose of prosecuting the action. Sandvig and Walters
represents Mrs. Jordan.
The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., March 13, 1936, page 1
Damages of $30,198.90 for the death of Marvin O. Jordan, pedestrian killed when struck by an automobile in
Zillah February 3 are asked in a suit started in superior court in Yakima county, March 4 by the widow, Mrs.
Treva Jordan, against Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Mehlin, Andrew Heitzman and the Fletcher Oil Co.
Jordan was struck down while walking on property near the highway in Zillah by an automobile operated jointly
by Mehlin and Heitzman who were acting as agents for the oil company, it is alleged. The accident occurred 25
feet east of the highway entering Zillah from the north, the complaint states.
The automobile which struck and killed Jordan was traveling at an excessive rate of speed and was entirely of
control when it left the highway, it is alleged. Mehlin was drunk at the time, it is charged. Jordan was capable of
earning $100 a month, his widow claims. There are six minor children ranging in age from 19 to six years, who
were dependent upon their father for support, Mrs. Jordan says.
The widow asked $30,000 general damages for loss of her husband and $198.90 for the funeral expenses. D.S.
Fletcher, F.O. Fletcher and Helen Fletcher O'Connell are named as co-partners doing business as the Fletcher Oil
Co., and are made defendants in the action. Sandvig & Walters represents Mrs. Jordan.
