General Notes: Came to America about 1634 together with his brother Robert who settled in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Edward Fletcher in his Genealogy states that they came "before 1634" with their families. Minister at Oyster River (Dover) 1656. No mention of his wife is made although she must have come with him as well as his small son Seth. The daughter Hope must have been born in England as well. William returned to England but seems to have come again. He was referred to in Saco as "Mr." William Fletcher, the only person thus dignified in the town book. He had difficulty with the town while at Dover but the record does not state the nature of it. On March 6, 1661, the town of Dover made a grant to "Mr. Fletcher."
Mr. Fletcher, minister of Saco, exhorted the people to prayer to the Lord to direct them as they were under two claymes of government.
The burial of Mr. William Fletcher is recorded as January 3, 1667/8 in the town book. Thought to have been the father of the minister.
The name Fletcher means "An arrow maker." The allied clan is MacGregor which means "Children of the Mist." The meanings come from the lowlands of Scotland. The Tartan colors are Red & Blue. The Plant Badge is Scotch Pine.

General Notes: The information given here is from an account of the highlights of Sir Robert's colorful life and career which appears in The History of Parliament. He was described as "a gentleman for person, address, and skill in languages, [who] had no superior in England nor equal, except Sir Philip Sydney," and Queen Elizabeth is said to have recommended him to Olive Talbot as asuitable bridegroom. His court career was ruined through a "spectacular quarrel with Edwin Sandys, archbishop of York." He was High Sheriff of yorkshire in 1580-1.
