ABLETT, EVA ANN nee MILLER

Eva Miller was born in Oamaru in 1894, the daughter of John and Honoria Miller nee Kelly. She married Leonard Arnold Ablett in 1923 in Oamaru, and the couple spent the first few years of their married life in Christchurch, before coming to Hawera in 1926, when Leonard became managing editor of the Hawera Star.

Eva was president from 1951 to August 1955 of the South Taranaki Red Cross Centre, and a delegate in that period to the annual conference of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. She was widely known for her administrative and organising ability. Prior to assuming office as centre president, Eva was Hawera sub-centre president from 1947 to 1951 and an active member in organising the annual street appeal. In the war years, she took a prominent part in the Red Cross canteen service provided for departing and returning servicemen passing through the town.

A life long interest in Plunket, meant Eva served for a number of years on the committee of the Hawera branch and in 1955, received the certificate of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children for her 21 years service.

A foundation member of the Hawera Women's Club, Eva took a keen interest in its early activities. For a number of years she was a member of the executive of the Hawera Girl Guides' Association. Her major interest and enthusiasm in latter years, in addition to her Red Cross work, was the Hawera Women's Bowling Club in which she was a promising player in the junior handicap section.

Eva Ann Ablett died on the 11 November 1955 at Hawera aged 60 years, and is buried at the Hawera cemetery.
