Descendants of William McLeaird and Elvie Rushing

1. William McLeaird was born on 14 Mar 1792 in Anson Co, North Carolina, died on 14 Mar 1875 in Franklin Co, Georgia, at age 83, and was buried in Old Canon Church, Hart County, Georgia.

In the year of our Lord 1816, the McLeaird and Rushing families were united with the marriage of William McLeaird and Elvey Rushing. Family histories have recorded much about William, but Elvey Rushing remains the elusive ancestor. Nothing is known about her parents so far.

William McLeaird, of Scotch descent, was born in Anson County, North Carolina. He served as a soldier in the War of 1812 and also served in the militia of his State.

The origin of William's surname remains somewhat of a mystery. Some descendants think this surname came from McLeod or McClaren. Others think it may have come from Laird.

Copies of William's War of 1812 records show his surname recorded as McLeaird, McCleard, and McLaird. He wrote to the Pension Commissioners in 1872 stating:
"I am not distinct in my recollection how my name was spelled in the Army Roll or in my discharge, but the following is the correct spelling of my name--William McLeaird."

Over the years William's descendants have spelled their surname in various ways: McLeaird, McLaird, McLeard, Leaird, Laird, Lard, and Leard. Therefore you will find quite a variety of spellings amongst the descendants.

Starting out in Anson County, North Carolina, William and his wife Elvey eventually settled in the Reed Creek Community (Hart County, Georgia) near the Tugalo River.
By trade William was a hatter. He and Elvey were blessed with nine sons and three daughters.

William and Elvey rest in the Old Canon Baptist Church Cemetery. There is a large granite monument placed between the original gravestones of William and Elvey. On this monument is engraved:
"True to their convictions as the polar star, they stood for the right. Feerless of criticism, braver souls never faced a cannon. Honor to their ashes, blessed peace to their immortal souls."

Land in Randolph County, Arkansas

William was given a Bounty Land Warrant as part of his
compensation for serving in the War of 1812. It was Warrant No. 7798. This
warrant entitled William to 160 acres of land.

The document that tells where this land says:

"In pursuance of the Acts of Congress appropriating and granting Land to the
late Army of the United States, passed on and since the sixth day of May
1812, William McCleard, having deposited in the General Land Office a Warrant
in his favor, numbered 7798, there is granted unto the said William McCleard,
late a corporal in Gourdin's Company of the forty third Regiment of Infantry,
a certain Tract of Land, containing one hundred sixty acres, being the
Southeast quarter of Section twenty six of Township eighteen north in Range
one west in the Tract appropriated (by the aforesaid) for Military Bounties,
in the Territory of Arkansas to have and to hold the quarter section of land,
with the appurtenances thereof, unto the said William McCleard and to his
heirs and assigns forever."

William married Elvey Rushing on 28 Nov 1816 in Anson Co, North Carolina. Elvey was born on 4 Jan 1802 in Anson Co, North Carolina, died on 24 Mar 1890 in Franklin Co, Georgia, at age 88, and was buried in Old Canon Church, Hart County, Georgia.

There is a Jesse J. Rushing who was born in Anson Co. in 1804. In 1850 he was living in Anson County and owned 15 slaves. He is buried in an unmarked grave, beside the road, about one mile north of White's Store. At the time of his death Jesse owned about 1100 acres of land in Anson and Union Counties.

Because Elvey named one of her sons, "Jesse J." , some descendants believe this Jesse J. (born in 1804) is indeed her younger brother. The dates would certainly be reasonable; she being born in 1802 and he in 1804.
After the Civil War, Elvey's son William came back to Anson Co. N.C. from Georgia and purchased land on the north side of Brown Creek. The witness was Jesse J. Rushing....his uncle? Very likely, but not proven yet.

2. James W Leaird was born on 18 Aug 1817 in Anson Co, North Carolina, died on 14 May 1881 in Hart County, Georgia, at age 63, and was buried in Reed Creek Baptist Cemetery, Hart County, Georgia.

In the year of our Lord, 1842, the McLeaird and O'Barr families were united with the marriage of James W. Leaird and Mary O'Barr. Both James and his wife were children of Reed Creek settlers who came into the area from the Carolinas. Their fathers were both hatters by trade. The Reed Creek area was known for its beautiful rolling forests and fertile fields. Situated in the northeast portion of the country it was bounded on the north and east by the Tugalo River. The perpetual streams were ideal for grist mills and cotton gins and James obviously took advantage of this as an owner of a grist mill, cotton gin, thresher, and other machinery. He was engaged in farming and was also a large land owner and a hat maker.

The Hartwell Sun of 21 May 1881 reported the following: "James Leard of Reed Creek Community was suddenly stricken with paralysis last Thursday and died last Saturday."

It is not know when his wife Mary died, but both are buried in the Reed Creek Baptist Cemetery.

James married Mary O'Barr , daughter of William O'Barr and Frances Adams , in Jul 1842. Mary was born on 24 Oct 1823 in Anderson, South Carolina and was buried in Reed Creek Baptist Cemetery, Hart County, Georgia.

Mary was the daughter of William and Frances Adams O'Barr. She was a descendant of the O'Barr family which originally came to Virginia from Ireland. Her father was a colonel in the State Militia from Franklin County and also served as sheriff of Franklin County in 1848 when the Reed Creek was still part of Franklin County. It later became Hart County.

14 M i. James Polk Leaird was born in 1845 in Georgia and died on 19 Sep 1863 in Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, at age 18.

During the War Between the States James Polk Leaird enlisted 10 March 1863 as a private with Company H, 15th Georgia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. He was killed 19 Sept 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga.

9. Caswell Leaird was born about 1835 in Franklin Co, Georgia, died on 10 Jul 1863 in Ft Delaware, Delaware, about age 28, and was buried in Finns Point National Cemetery.

Caswell enlisted with the 9th Battalion Georgia Volunteers, Company A, on 4 March 1862. His brother David also enlisted with this unit at the same time.

Caswell organised the "Caswell Sharpshooters". He was captured by Union forces at Hooker Gap, Tennessee 24 June 1863.

He is believed to have died of small pox at Ft Delaware where he was a POW. The prisoners who died at Ft Delaware were buried in a mass grave now designated as Finns Point National Cemetery. There is a monument erected to the some 2,436 Confederate prisoners buried there. His name is listed on a bronze plate as Caswell Lard.

10. Alfred Leaird was born about 1837 in Franklin Co, Georgia, died on 23 Nov 1871 in Warren County, Tennessee, about age 34, and was buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Viola, Tennessee.

Alfred left Georgia about 1863 and settled in Tennessee. His family in Georgia heard nothing from him until Alfred's son, Byron, went back to Georgia for a visit. Byron shared with the Georgia relatives that Alfred had been a school teacher and that he had died in 1871.

Alfred married Susan Christian on 26 Oct 1867 in Grundy County, Tennessee. Susan was born on 8 Jun 1845, died on 3 Apr 1885 in Warren County, Tennessee, at age 39, and was buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Viola, Tennessee.

William J. Leard served the Confederate States of America as a private with Company K, 26th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He enlisted 10 May 1862. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg 1863 and captured. He was hospitalized at Gettsyburg and later in September 1863 was exchanged for another prisoner. He was back on Confederate duty in November 1864, but was captured again at Petersberg, Virginia, and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 24 June 1865 and released.

After the war William returned home to Anson County, North Carolina, and served on the Board of County Commissioners and was chairman 1868-1869.

When his wife Angeline died in 1886 he married two more times before his death at age 69.

William married Angeline Reece Phillips on 24 Sep 1848 in Franklin County, Georgia. Angeline Reece Phillips died in 1886.

13. Harriet Nuel Leaird was born on 6 Jan 1846 in Georgia and died on 2 Sep 1920, at age 74.

Harriet married Robert William Massey , son of James F. Massey and Frances Townsend , on 16 Aug 1866. Robert was born on 4 Jun 1846 in Hart County, Georgia and died on 1 Mar 1926 in Hart County, Georgia, at age 79.

Robert W. Massey served in the Confederate army with Butler's South Carolina Infantry, Company I, as a private and later promoted to a corporal.
3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment [also called 1st Regulars or Enlisted Men] was organized in December, 1860, with eight companies, later increased to ten. The men were recruited in Charleston, Columbia, and Cheraw, and the counties of Greenville, Lancaster, Chesterfield, and Anderson. The unit trained as infantry and artillery, and served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It took an active part in many conflicts in and around Charleston. In September, 1862, the unit contained 628 effectives and during the operations on Morris Island, July 10 to September 6, 1863, it lost 10 killed, 32 wounded, and 22 missing. In January, 1865, it was assigned to Colonel A. Rhett's Brigade and, serving as infantry, was active in the North Carolina Campaign. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonels Richard H. Anderson, William Butler, and John Dunovant; Lieutenant Colonels Thomas M. Baker, Barnard E. Bee, Robert De Treville, and John C. Simkins; and Majors Warren Adams and Thomas A. Huguenin.

Mr. James Robert Leard, 81, prom-
inent Hartwell citizen, died at 9:30
o'clock Monday night, February 9, at
the home on west Howell street fol-
lowing an illness of several months.
Funeral services were held Wed-
nesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock
from the Hartwell Baptist church, of
which he had long been a member,
conducted by the pastor, Dr. Rufus
D. Hodges, assisted by Rev. Willard
W. Cash, Methodist pastor. Deserv-
ed tribute was paid the life and
memory of the deceased, who was
one of the community's oldest and
most highly respected citizens. Many
floral offerings were sent by sorrow-
ing friends here and elsewhere.
Mr. Leard was born in Hart Coun-
ty December 14, 1860, a son of the
late Caswell Leard, who died in the
War Between the States, and Mrs.
Lovic Ann Steifel Leard.
He served Hart County as Sheriff
many years ago, also filling the places
of Tax Collector, Representative in
the General Assembly, and was chair-
man of the first Board of Finance in
this county.
For many years he and the late
Postmaster John C. Massey operated
a large mercantile establishment in
Hartwell, and also engaged in ex-
tensive farming.
A man of unquestioned integrity,
sobriety and high Christian ideals,
Mr. Leard was a great force for good
throughout his long life, and will be
sorely missed.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Miss Elva Massey, to whom he was
married in 1885; four daughters,
Mrs. Claud W. Dooley, of Macon,
Mrs. J. M. Randall, of Lavonia, Mrs.
W. G. Dooley of Gadsden, Ala., and
Mrs. Ralph Jeffers, of Holly Hill, S.
C., and three sons, Lt. Col. Emil W.
Leard, of Hawaii, J. Robt. Leard, of
Petersburg, Va., and J. Olin Leard,
of Charleston, S. C.
The sympathy of a host of friends
is extended the bereaved family.
Interment was in Northview ceme-
tery, pallbearers being W. G. Hod-
ges, L. B. Carlton, W. D. Teasley, C.
J. Leard, H. I. Alford and H. E.
Ethridge. Honorary pallbearers in-
cluded members of the Sunday school
class of which he was a member, and
others.

FIRST HARTWELL AREA CAR WAS HOME-MADE.

In about 1907 or 1908, John Leard of Hartwell, Georgia, had an idea: He wanted to build an automobile. Leard was a farmer by profession, but a mechanic and tinkerer at heart.

At that time no one in the area owned a car, factory-made or home-made. "Those were still horse and buggy days," recalls Miss Pruda Leard, a daughter of John Leard who was not yet born when her father began his plans to build an automobile. That would seem enough to stop the insincere. But it was not enough to stop an ardent mechanic and tinkerer like John Leard.

According to Miss Leard, her father ordered the auto's engine and built the rest of the car himself. Miss Leard says she does not remember the car, but recalls what her mother often told her about it. Miss Leard's older sister, Mrs. Dessie McQueen, says she remembers the car very well. "I learned to drive on that car. I guess I was only about 12 or 13 years old," she said.

Mrs. McQueen said her father did most of the work on making the car while the family lived in Hartwell. The Leard family then moved to Fair Play and brought the car with them. They later moved to Westminster. The sisters said people would come from "a long ways off" just to see the car when it was first built in Hartwell.

Apparently the car ran well, Mrs. McQueen said her father used to drive it from Hartwell to Walhalla and Westminster and from Fair Play to Westminster and Townville. The only problem Leard had with the car seemed to be its novelty. "It scared every mule and horse off the road," Miss Leard explained. "That might have been why he got rid of it -it caused so many horses to run away."

The sisters said their brother Fred Jack Leard of Westminster, is an avid tinkerer and inventor much like his father.

What the elder Leard did with the car is still a mystery to the family. Mrs. McQueen believes her father traded it for a "factory-made machine." The family has heard rumors that the car is now in an automobile museum somewhere, but they have been unable to substantiate it.

"I would give anything in the world to know where the car got to. I would go hundreds of miles to see it," said Miss Leard.

Miss Leard did remember that a photograph of the car had appeared in a magazine one time. After talking with Otis Mason, the Westminster high priest of tinkering and mechanics, it turns out that the photo did run in a magazine. It was in the June 17, 1946, issue of Life, in a special edition saluting the 50th anniversary of the motorcar.

Mason said he had heard a lot about the car and its builder. "He must have been a very smart man, Mason said. After studying the photograph of the car, Mason said from the design of the car it look as if it had a marine engine. He said he could see what looked like a water hopper. Mason also noticed in the photo that the auto's crank is visible in Leard's right coat pocket.

Since Leard had never seen an automobile, he patterned much of the car's design after what he was familiar with: wagons. The car's body was built of wood, as were the wheels. The braking system was also like that of a wagon--the driver pressed a lever, which in turn pressed a wooden bar against the vehicle's read wheels. The car featured no steering wheel; it had a wooden steering stick.

All of Leard's children and many other relatives have copies of the photograph reproduced with this story. For Mrs. McQueen it brings back memories of learning to drive. For Miss Leard, it brings back stories her mother used to tell about it.

But for anyone, it is surprising that a Hartwell farmer, who had never ever seen a motorcar, could have ordered an engine for one, and more amazingly, built the car on his own in 1908.

Oklahoma Woman Talks On Stone Mountain
The excerpts below taken from an article written by Mrs. Mary Leard Slover of Sulphur, Okla., and published by the Sulphur Democrat, will prove interesting to the readers of the Journal. Mrs. Slover's ancestors were pioneers of Cobb County, maintaining a residence here on the Atlanta Road as late as the sixties. The article reads in part:
"When we came in view of this 'eighth wonder of the world,' greater than Gibraltar, at the base seven miles around and nearly a thousand feet from base to summit at the northern face where the memorial is carved, it stirred all hearts with emotion that was indescribable.
"When we realize that the greatest memorial project of the ages we feel that in our own country, at our own doors, something is being done that rivals the ancient wonders of the Greeks and the Egyptians. Nowhere can this be duplicated, for in no nation on earth is there such a granite mountain. In countless ages, when other memorials have crumbled into dust, this will remain, bearing upon its face the record of deathless memories.
"The originator of this memorial is Mrs. Helen Plane, 94 years of age. She was lifted from her car in the arms of the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, and placed upon the rostrum, which was situated some quarter of a mile from figures on the mountain face. The autos were about half a mile on each side of the rostrum. Twenty thousand people stood to watch the unveiling of the great head of the grand man and hero. Not a sound was heard in all that vast concourse there was no talking, not even whispering, no moving or sound of cars, no smoking of cigars, pipes, or cigarettes---a silence that was felt as we feel the silence around the beloved dead. But when the flags were drawn from each side, and the white veil underneath was slowly pulled away, shouts filled the air, cars honked their horns, and the refuse rock from the excavations came pouring down the mountain from in an avalanche of roaring sound.
"Then came the classic speech of the talented Dr. Plato Durham, in which he paid the highest eulogies to the hero and his armies, which were meritoriously deserved.
"The finished head of the hero as it stands today, covers a greater area than the Lion of Lucerne. It measures 24 feet from the collar band to the top of his hat, an equal distance from the front of the brim of his hat to the back edge of the brim. Sixteen ladies ate breakfast on his shoulder that morning. The horse's legs are like barrels. If nothing else were carved on Stone Mountain but the figures of Lee and his faithful "Traveler" it would surpass any other sculptured figure in the world, but this is only a beginning.
"From the mountain we were invited to Piedmont Driving Club, where was served a most wonderful six o'clock dinner. Then there were more speeches by governors, and the renowned and talented minister of Atlanta, Rev. Ashby Jones, son of Robert E. Lee's Chaplin.
"I visited the monument of Henry Grady. In 1889, just prior to his death, I heard one of his wonderful speeches on 'The New South.' He was one of Georgia's great men---but others have sprung up. Near the farm of my uncle, is the home of Cora Harris, of Whose fame Georgia is justly proud.
"One feature of the memorial will be a huge colonnade of thirteen columns, one for each of the Confederate States, carved from the solid granite of the mountain. Behind these columns will be excavated a great hall, which is intended to include a memorial to the women of the South. It will be fifty feet across and will extend two hundred feet back into the mountain. This will serve as a safe deposit place for documents and other mementos gathered by the Daughters of the Confederacy.
"In this hall will be placed 'The Founder's Roll,' which will be composed of the names of Confederate soldiers. Anyone wishing a relative's name placed therein will communicate with the Stone Mountain Association, Atlanta, Ga., or with the writer, who will give all necessary information."

Mrs. MARY L. SLOVER, a pioneer resident of Sulphur, passed away at the Confederate Home at Ardmore Wednesday morning. Funeral services are scheduled in Ardmore Friday morning, place not yet announced. Members of the Eastern Star will attend. She is survived by one son, Thomas A. Webb of San Antonio, Texas and as stepson, Dr. George Slover of Sulphur. Burial will be at the Ardmore cemetery. Mrs. Slover had lived at Sulphur for a half century and had resided at the Confederate Home for several months.

Theodorick served as a Private with the 17th Texas Cavalry Company B, CSA, during the War Between the States.
The 17th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the spring of 1862 with men from Nacogdoches, Cherokee, Smith, and Red River counties. The unit was soon dismounted and sent to Arkansas where it was captured at Arkansas Post in January, 1863. After being exchanged it was consolidated with the 18th, 24th, and 25th Texas Cavalry Regiments (dismounted), and served in Deshler's, J.A. Smith's, and Granbury's Brigade. This command fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville and then saw action in North Carolina. Only a handful surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels G.F. Moore, James R. Taylor, and Thomas F. Tucker, and Lieutenant Colonels Sterling B. Hendricks, John McClarty; and Sebron M. Noble.

BOBBIE RUTH LEARD
WESTMINSTER - Bobbie Ruth Leard, 90, of 1751 Dr. Johns Road, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at her residence.

Born in Rabun County, Ga. on March 16, 1915, she was a very active member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. She was a retired high school teacher and graduated from Clemson University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree and Master's Degree.

Surviving are son, Robert J. "Bobby" Leard of Westminster; daughters, Jeannie L. Broome and Linda Kay Leard, both of Westminster; sister, Miriam Robinson of Lilburn, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, the late Fred Jack Leard, son Jack Duane Leard and her parents, Jesse Warren and Melinda Hopper Rogers preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Westminster.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family is at their respective homes.

The Sandifer Funeral Home, Westminster is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Allen, 85, died November 3, 2007, after a brief bout with
cancer. He has gone to be with his Lord and Savior, who he so
diligently loved and served.

Born February 20, 1922 in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of the late
James General and Birdie Leard Allen. Due to the early death of both
parents, Richard was raised at his beloved Thornwell Orphanage.

After proudly serving in the United Stares Army during WWII, Richard
lived in Monterey, California, where he managed the Fort Ord Officers
Club for over 50 years until his retirement. He moved to Greenville
five years ago to be close to his family. He is survived by a sister,
Azilee Allen Wham, nieces Brenda Garrett, Patsy Wham Robertson, Kim
Henrikson, Tricia Reamer and nephews William and Edward Allen, and
well as many local family members he has discovered and grown to love
through his passion and study of Genealogy. Richard was predeceased
by three brothers, Clifford Allen of Washington State, Edward Allen
of Charleston, J.G. Allen of Athens, Ga., and his nephew Kyle
Robertson. He is survived and predeceased by many of his dear
Thornwell brothers and sisters, as well.

A skilled artist and caricaturist, he has degrees from the Famous
Artist School in Westport, Conn., and Kingsland School of Puppetry in
Brandon, Vt., where he received training in art, cartooning &
puppetry. He was a very special "Uncle Richard" to his nieces and
nephews, always entertaining them when they were young with his
many "magic tricks." He traveled extensively, enjoying life along the
way, as well as friendship with his friends & family and sharing a
hearty laugh. In his last years, he devoted much of him time to
studying God's word and praising his Heavenly Father.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Wood Mortuary,
conducted by Rev. Tom Riddle. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m.
Monday at Wood Mortuary. The family is at the home of his niece,
Patsy Robertson, 304 Piney Mountain Rd., Greenville, SC 29609. In
lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Thornwell Home, P.O. Box
60, Clinton, SC 29325.

Claude J. Leard, rural mail car-
rier from the Hartwell postoffice for
route 2, on Wednesday, January 4th,
celebrated his 33rd year in the ser-
vice.
Beginning in 1906 as carrier from
Bowersville, where he was born and
reared, Mr. Leard remained in the
service there for some 18 months and
was transferred to Reed Creek, where
he handled the old "loop route," the
mail being delivered to him there by
Mr. J. T. Hall, who retired several
years ago. Later this route was dis-
continued and Mr. Leard took up his
delivery from the Hartwell office on
old route 4, which was consolidated
a few years ago.
Mr. Leard is now the oldest man
connected with the Hartwell postof-
fice from the standpoint of service.
Beginning as a youth he has seen
many changes during the past 33
years--including the passing of the
horse and buggy days.
He still has some 14 years' service
before reaching the retirement age.
Many friends in both town and
county, and especially along the
routes he has served during these
years, join in extending congrat-
ulations on the celebration of his 33rd
year in Uncle Sam's service.

Dorothy worked in the Sausalito wartime shipyard infirmary during World War II. Later, while raising a family, she worked at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. After her sons left home during the 1960's she returned to school at UCSF for a maternity nurse practitioner license. She ended her career at Kaiser in 1985 and went on to promote emergency preparedness in Sausalito for 10 more years.

Rev. Lewis Walter Gibson

Black Mountain - Rev. Lewis Walter Gibson, 84, died Thursday, Jan 27, 2005, at Mission Hospitals.

A native of Westminster, S.C., he was the son of the late John Walter and Lillie Maebelle Leard Gibson. A brother, Johnny F. Gibson, also predeceased him. He served in the Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II.

For fifty years Rev. Gibson pastored Southern Baptist churches in North and South Carolina and Tennessee, retiring from First Baptist Church, Highlands, in 1985. He attended North Greenville College, was a graduate of Carson-Newman College and attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a published author.

His beloved wife of 63-1/2 years, Anne Mauldin Gibson, and daughters, Barbara Gibson and Rita Vermillion, all of Black Mountain, survive, as well as three grandchildren, Jay Myers and his wife, Andrea Freeman, of Swannanoa, Amy Vermillion of Black Mountain and Joy Vermillion of Winston-Salem; and two great-grandsons, Rohan and Max Myers. He is also survived by sisters, Mae Foster of Walhalla, S.C. and Jewel (Gerald) Dempsey of Taylors, S.C. This sweet, gentle man was a lifelong source of strength and love for his family and a pastor for friends all around the world.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Black Mountain, with visitation preceding the service at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary. Private burial will be at the VA Cemetery in Black Mountain.

Mae Gibson Harden Foster, of Walhalla, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the home of her son in Clemson.
She is remembered by many in Walhalla as the nurse in the office of Dr. John T. Davis, where she assisted him for 24 years. She was married to Mart L. Harden Jr. of Walhalla from 1946 until his death in 1967. She was later married to C.V. (Verner) Foster of Walhalla from 1985 until his death in 1993.
Mae, born on March 8, 1927, was the daughter of the late John Walter and Lillie Mae Leard Gibson. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jewel Dempsey of Taylors, and she is predeceased by two brothers, John F. (Johnnie) Gibson and the Rev. Lewis W. Gibson.
She leaves three children: a daughter, Mrs. Nedrah H. McBride and her husband, John, of Walhalla; a son, Mr. John M. Harden and his wife, Christel, of Clemson; and a stepson, Mr. Michael Foster and his wife, Kathy, of Oakway. Her grandchildren are Scott McBride and his wife, Stephanie, of York, S.C., Julia McBride of Walhalla, James Harden of Seneca, Mary Katherine Harden of Clemson, Stephen Foster of Clemson, Alan Foster serving with the Peace Corps in Panama, and Daniel Foster of Colorado. A great-grandchild, Olivia Mae McBride, is due in April.
The family is at her home in Walhalla.
A memorial service will be held at College Street Baptist Church on Friday March 3, 2006, at 11 a.m., and the family will receive friends at the church afterwards. A private interment will take place at a later date.

Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Odes and Virginia Schultz Deaton. She retired from Pratt Reed, and was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Collier, Judy Westcott, and Deborah Suddeth; two brothers, Frank and Edward Deaton; two sisters, Annie Mae Stubblefield and Edna Tollison; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

WESTMINSTER, S.C. - Linda Kay Leard, 65, of 109 Jenkins Bridge Road, died Sunday, March 11 at Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 15 at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 14 at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted. The family is at the home of her daughter Denise Crocker, 119 Jenkins Bridge Road, Westminster.

Born in Oconee County on Feb. 12, 1942 to Fred Jack and Bobbie Ruth Leard, she had been employed by Jantzen.

Surviving are son Bill Certain and wife Jennifer of Lexington, S.C.; daughters Denise Crocker and husband Brian of Westminster, Wanda Hubbard and husband Brad of Texas City, Texas, and Tammy Blackwell of Lexington; sister Jeannie Broome and husband Randall of Westminster; brother Bobby Leard and wife Donna of Westminster and five grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, a brother Jack Duane Leard preceded her in death.

CINCINNATI -- Frank Gregorin, 90, of the Cincinnati community died Feb. 13, 2006, at his home. He was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Little Falls, N.Y., to Frank Gregorin Sr. and Mary Yerina Gregorin. He was president of the school board for a number of years in Little Falls. He was an Army Signal Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and owned an appliance store in Little Falls for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Gregorin of the home; two sons, Dr. David Gregorin of Sewickley, Pa., and Dennis Gregorin of Little Falls; two daughters, Donna Schwieder of Cincinnati and Debbie Jensen of Gentry; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Luginbuel Funeral Home in Prairie Grove with the Rev. David Gregorin officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs.

SUMMERS, Ark. — Frank Gregorin, 90, died February 13, 2006, at his home at 13433 Gregorin Rd., Summers, Ark. He was born October 17, 1915, in Little Falls, the son of Frank and Mary Yerina Gregorin Sr.
A 1923 graduate of Little Falls High School, Gregorin was a World War II veteran with the Army 65th Signal Corps. He was active in the Little Falls community before and after he moved to Arkansas. For a number of years he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was elected to the Little Falls Board of Education where he served a term as president. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church and served on its board of trustees. He owned and operated a General Electric appliance store for over 30 years. Up until five years ago (during his last summer to Little Falls) he was still making repair calls to Little Falls Hospital and individual residents as well going on weekly golf outings. He enjoyed his winters as “Mr. Fix it” on his son-in-law, Fred Schwieder’s, farm.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Juanita Gregorin; two sons, Dr. David Gregorin of Sewickley, Pa., and Dennis Gregorin of Little Falls; two daughters, Donna Schwieder of Summers, Ark., and Debbie Jensen of Gentry, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held February 15 in Prairie Grove, Ark. Burial followed at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs, Ark.

PRATT - Wallis, Mary Frances, 83, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at her home in Pratt, Kansas. She was born on April 8, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the youngest of three children and the only daughter of Thomas Allen Webb, Sr. and Eva Mabel Banta Webb. When she was 10 years old, the family made its move to Kansas.
"Fran" graduated from high school in Great Bend, Kansas, in 1942, and ended up in New Mexico as an Ammunition Inspector for Wingate Ordinance Depot during World War II. After the war ended, she moved on to Norman, Oklahoma, to attend Oklahoma University, where she met her future husband, J. D. "Jack" Wallis. Jack and Fran married on April 3, 1947, and in August of that year, they made their first move to New Mexico, where Jack began his first job with Mobil Oil Co. This move was the first of thirty-seven moves over three states; Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana. In each community, Fran was active in both a local church and in Girl Scouts.
She lived in Irving, Texas for 35 years, prior to moving to Pratt, Kansas, in 2001. She retired from Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals of Dallas, Texas, in 1986. Fran was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Girl Scout member for more than 30 years and a Sunday School teacher for more than 35 years. She was a faithful follower and wonderful witness for Jesus Christ all of her life. Fran was a living example of Christ's teachings and a blessing to her family and friends.
Mary Frances was pre-deceased by her parents; an infant son, James; and two brothers, Thomas Allen Webb, Jr. of Pratt, Kansas and Ellis Blaine Webb of Buena Vista, Colorado, and Pratt, Kansas.
Mary Frances is survived by her husband, Jack; two daughters, Sue (Jim) Byers of Pratt, Kansas, and Bonnie (Nick) Collier of Smithville, Texas; three grandchildren, Sean (Tracey) Collier of Atascadero, California, Mica (Chris) Nelson, and Kevin (Kristi) Fischer, all of Pratt, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Evan Collier and Jude Nelson. She is also survived by two step-grandchildren, Kelly (Lori) Byers of Maize, Kansas and Shana Rennaker of Pratt, Kansas; four step-great-grand children, Robb, Josh, and Jessica Rennaker and Jaron Byers.

DIANA - Services for Vernon Thomas "V.T." Leard, 77, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008, at the United Methodist Church of Ore City.
Mr. Leard peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 3, 2008, while at his home between Ore City and Diana.
He was born August 15, 1930, in Gilmer, Texas, to Clyde and Blanch Leard. V.T. was raised in Gilmer, where he attended junior high and high school. As a young man, he worked in his father's men's clothing and shoe store in Gilmer. After high school, he attended Kilgore Junior College and later served in the U.S. Marine Corps. V.T. worked for Texas Eastman for 38 years before retiring in 1991.
He was the devoted husband of Virginia Gaddis Leard. They were married April 23, 1954, and lived in Gilmer for 12 years. They later moved to their quiet home place between Ore City and Diana, where they lived for the past 42 years.
V.T. was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Ore City. He joined this church upon moving to Ore City and for the last 42 years, he faithfully served and happily attended there. During this time, he served on boards and committees such as chairman of finance, Pastor Parish Relations, Nominations and the building committee of the new Faith Center. He also taught Sunday school.
Music was a passion of his, and he generously shared his gift of voice with others as a member of the church choir. In his youth, he enjoyed playing the trumpet.
V.T. had a 'do it all' attitude. He gladly helped his family, friends and church family members whenever they needed help. His family lovingly referred to him as "Mr. Fix It." He completed many projects and received many blessings from volunteering in the community on projects such as the Ore City City Park. V.T. enjoyed woodworking; and, his bluebird houses, along with other wooden treasures, are still cherished by others. He enjoyed nature and the great outdoors and had a bountiful garden each year. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
V.T. was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Blanche Leard; and his brother, Jerry Leard.
V.T. is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Leard of Ore City, Texas; sisters, Anne Brown of Palestine, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Judy Leard of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will include Robert Cook, Tom Minor, Gaston "Bubba" DeBerry, Larry Frantzen, Tracy Leard, Brett Miller, Jonathan King and Larry Kanak.
The Leard family would like to extend special thanks to: Dr. Murry and his staff in Gilmer; Dr. Duncan and Dr. Taylor and their staff of The Longview Cancer Center; Dr. Martin and his staff of Longview; and The Heart'sWay Hospice and staff of Longview.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ore City United Methodist Church Choir Fund.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening, August 6, 2008, at Grubbs-loyd Funeral Home in Diana.

DOD: July 31, 2004 Jerry Lynn Leard was born April 13, in Gilmer, Texas. He attended Gilmer Public schools and Kilgore Jr. College. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music at Stephen F. Austin University and a Master's Degree in Education at The University of Texas in Austin. He served as a band director for several east Texas public schools; was Director of Testing at the Federal Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas; was a counselor and Academic Dean for 24 years at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas; and finished his career as a high school counselor at Palestine High School in Palestine, Texas. He moved from Tyler to Carrollton in 2002 to be near his children and grandchildren. He was an avid collector of jokes, which he told with relish and glee. After retiring, he returned to his first love of stamp collecting and with the advent of EBay found the perfect outlet for his stamp enthusiasm. Without this outlet he would never have been able to find so many stamp collectors to share his passion. He grew up in the United Methodist Church and continued to share his joy for music with active participation with the church choir at Holy Covenant UMC in Carrollton, Texas. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and his eternal optimism will be missed by anyone who had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents Blanche and Clyde Leard and is survived by Kate, his wife of 50 years, his daughter Lynda Morgan and her husband Kevin Morgan, his son Tracy Leard and his wife Janis Leard all of Carrollton. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Brittany, Jefferson, Zack, Karen, her husband Robert and great grandchild Julia. He is also survived by two brothers, one sister and a host of dearly loved friends. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 1:00 pm at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, Carrollton, TX.
