17.2.1739 Thomas SMITH of Ipswich, officer of Excise, coming from Dunwich, was found dead on Sizewell Walks, supposed to be frozen to death in this vigorous season. Fee for ground 10/6d. Even the vicar sounds sceptical about Mr Smith's cause of death. It seems that being a customs and excise man was a dangerous undertaking.
