BULKWORTHY is a village and parish in Bideford union, containing, by the census of 1861, 128 inhabitants, and 1115 acres ; in the deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire; 8 miles south-west from Torrington, and 10 from Bideford, on the banks of the river Torridge. The living is a chapelry, attached with that of East Putford to the vicarage of Buckland Brewer, in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Adams Colling, B.A., and the patronage of the Crown; joint annual value £326. The chapel consists of nave, chancel, and south aisle, and was erected by Chief Justice Hankford. The Bible Christians have a place of worship here. J. C. Moore Stevens and the Rev. John Dayman are the principal landowners, the former being lord of the manor.
