BUCKLAND BREWER is a village and parish in Bideford union, containing, by the census of 1861, 922 inhabitants, and 6157 acres; in the deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shebbear, North Devonshire; 5 miles west from Great Torrington and 5½ miles south-west from Bideford. The vicarage, to which is attached the chapelries of East Putford and Bulkworthy, is in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Adams Collings B.A., and the patronage of the Crown; joint annual value £326. The church is a commodious edifice dedicated to Saints Mary and Benedict, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower with six bells. There is also a handsome Norman porch. The fabric was rebuilt in 1770. The Baptists and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There is a Parochial School for children of both sexes. The Hon. Mark Rolle, John Curso Moore Stevens, and Thomas Rogers, Esq., are the chief landowners. The poor have about £4 per annum, arising from a legacy bequeathed by Hester Turner, in 1787.

BILSFORD 1½ mile west, THORNEHILLHEAD, 3 miles south, and TYTHECOTT, 2 miles south, are hamlets forming part and parcel of this parish.
