South Pool Transcribed from - Morris and Co.'s Commercial Directory and Gazetteer. 1870 Please notify me of any errors.  Contact.  Transcribed by Kevin BROWN Checked by Val HENDERSON   Page 866 SOUTH POOL is a parish in Kingsbridge union, containing, by the census of 1861, 413 inhabitants, and 2289 acres: in the deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Coleridge, East Devonshire, at the head of a navigable creek from the English Channel, 5 miles south-east from Kingsbridge. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Richard Dobson Alexander B.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1840, at £387 per annum, with residence and 47 acres of glebe land, and is in the alternate patronage of Arthur Kelly, Esq., and Captain Halifax, the former having two presentations to the latter one. The church is a fine edifice in the Perpendicular style, dedicated to St. Nicholas and St. Cyriacus, with tower containing a peal of six bells. Leonard Dare left an annuity of 21s., and Andrew Horsman 25s. per annum to be distributed amongst the poor.
