Georges With Early Greenbrier - Monroe Co WV Ties

Reuben & Ann Handley George Line
Greenbrier Co (WV) Georges
How is Ann Handley George's husband Reuben George related to them?

Reuben George, born July 31, 1776, who died in Butler County OH in 1837 and was buried in the old George Burial Ground was not the son of Reuben and Mildred Rogers George, as family members once thought. (Having a different birth year wouldn't necessarily disprove him as their son, but being married to a different woman plus different birth and death years does.)

"Our" Reuben was in Greenbrier County VA (now WV) for several years, and married Archibald and Jean (HENDERSON) HANDLEY's daughter, Ann, there in 1797. (Where they lived in Greenbrier County later became Monroe Co, WV.) So the purpose of this page will be to collect the names of George's living in that area around that time in hopes of finding some proof of relationship. This is the area in which Mary Jane George Rieth (granddaughter of Cary George) did so much research.

Other George families living in Greenbrier County, WV may have been related to our Reuben George - or not. This may be later clarified by DNA tests through the George Surname Project. On the Surname GEORGE Study Test Results page, Reuben George 1776 is listed. Also see George Immigrants.

The Monroe County Marriage Record stated that Margaret George, d/o Reuben and Anna GEORGE, married Thomas Raines. In actuality, his wife was Margaret Handley (1788 VA - 1857 IN) and not Margaret George, and they named one of their children Handley Raines. This Margaret is not the William and Keziah Caile Handley daughter Margaret Handley (1789-1861) who married a Mr. Campbell Source: Melva Wheelwright, 11/16/1999 & 10/02/2006

According to Randy Hanley's book, Thomas and Peggy had 6 children:
1. Thomas Rains - -
2. William Rains - 1816 -
3. Jonathon Rains - May 07, 1820 OH -
4. St Clair Rains - Dec 12, 1822 OH -
5. Elizabeth Rains - 1828 OH -
6. Handley Rains - 1835 - (He had a daughter, Eva Rains Silence, a granddaughter, Anna Silence Hawkins, a great-granddaughter, Cora Hawkins Bingaman, and a 2 great-granddaughter, Audrey Bingaman Patterson.)
