He married Agnes Diedrich 23 February 1876 in Hannover, Prussia5,
daughter of Franz Diedrich and Katherine Engelhardt. She was born 16
September 1858 in Werschausen, Prussia5, and died 12 April 1934
in 481 Archer Street, Freeport, Long Island, Nassau Co. NY5.
Johann Christof Huch was also known as "Christian" Huch and "Christel"
Huch. In the german Roman Catholic tradition, at baptism, two (or sometimes
more) given names were selected for a child, the first given name was a
spiritual, saints name. The second given name was the secular, or call name,
which is the name the person was known by, both within the family and to the
rest of the world. The spiritual name, usually to honor a favorite saint,
was sometimes repeatedly given to all the children of that family of the
same sex. The spiritual name "Johann" , the equivilant of John in English,
was a particular favorite with german families, as were the spiritual names
Anna and Maria for females. For a child's secular name to be only John,
usually appearing spelled as "Johannes" , there usually was no second name
given. After baptism, the person would not be known by their first, or
spiritual name, but by what might be considered their middle name. In many
traditional german naming patterns, this second name is also the name of the
child's sponsor at the baptism. So Johann Christof would never have been
known as "Johann", but only as "Christof".

His "Stammbuch" or family record book with legal documents, entitled "Stammbuch
das Johann Christof Huch of NY " carries the seal of the Katholische
Parish Standesamt D. Kon Residenzstadt in Hannover, and contains the record
of his marriage to Agnes Diedrich, and the birth and baptismal records of
their children. In this book Johann Christof Huch's occupation is listed as
Master Builder. His parents are listed there as Johann Christof Huch, Master
Builder, and Christine Madeheim, residents of Hannover. So we can assume
that Johann Christof was named for his father.

Johann Christof Huch's death certificate states that he was in the U.S.
for 20 years, which would place his date of immigration sometime around
1883. However, in 1883 there is a ships record for the "Werra" arriving 23
February 1883 in New York from Bremen and Southampton. On this ship is his
wife Agnes (Diedrich) Huch, daughter Elfriede age 3, and son Alexander age
2, but there is no record of Johann Christof on the same ship. From the
birth and death locations of the children listed in the Stammbuch, it is
apparent that this family made several trips back to Hannover from the U.S.
They probably immigrated, arriving in New York sometime after 1 August 1880
(Baptismal record of son Franz in Hannover). Daughter Elfrieda (Huch)
Wallner's 1900 census record indicates that her year of immigration was
1880, which would also verify that they arrived late in that year, as they
are not found on the 1880 Federal Census.
In March 1885 the Huch family was in New York for the birth of daughter
Elisabeth. In May of 1888 they were still in New York when their daughter
Bertha died. They returned to Hannover in 1889, as evidenced by daughter
Margarethe's birth record in November and daughter Elisabeth's death
Christmas Day, the 25th of December of that same year in Hannover. The seal
of the church that dated and authenticated the records in the Stammbuch is
dated 5 November 1889, at the time of daughter Margarethe's birth, 13 years
after the first record, Johann Christof and Agnes Deidrich's marriage in
1876.
The family was in the US in 1898 however, and their daughter Elfride's
marriage certificate to Josef Wallner in April of that same year records the
bride's residence as 229 E. 88th Street in New York City.
This family also cannot be located on the 1900 Federal Census, and it is
possible they once again were in Hannover. His death certificate also states
that Johann Christof was a resident of New York City for 2 years at the time
of his death. This may also indicate that the family was in Hannover during
the time of the 1900 census, taken in June.
At the time of his death in 1903, they were residing at 320 Bleecker
Street, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. His widow, Agnes, was listed in Upington's
Directory for the years 1905, 1909 and 1913 still at this same address, her
occupation listed as nurse. Per his death certificate, Johann Christof's
occupation at that time was a "driver".
Daughter Elfrieda's marriage to Josef Wallner took place at St Joseph's
RC Church of Yorkville, New York City, NY. This church has no records of the
Huch family, other than Elfrieda's marriage, and her daughter Hildegard
Wallner's baptismal record.
Johann Christof's cause of death on the certificate is recorded as
Erysipelas Facialis Non Traumatic and Nephritis chronica. All of the entries
and records in the Stammbuch are written in german, and his wife records his
death there: "Johann Christof gennant Christel Huch gestorben am 3 Marz
1903. Begraben 15 Marz. Krank 4 wochen sterb un verleetzen die in Rose
unsurheb" (Johann Christof called Christel Huch died on 13 March 1903,
buried 15 March. Sick 4 weeks and died from injuries "caused by a rose").
The literal english translation of this entry was done by the Mormon
Family History Library german language experts in Salt Lake City Utah.
Several other german translation sources were previously contacted regarding
the translation of this unusual phrase "caused by a rose" after translation
attempts using a german dictionary failed to make any sense out of it. They
all agreed that the phrase and the use of the word "rose" as written, is not
a german word known to them, and the usage is very odd. The FHL advised "it
was no word we had ever seen before". Several theories have been put forth
to explain the use of the word "rose" in this entry. One explanation was
that the "rose" came from the slang term "ein Rose haben" for an infection.
Another explanation offered that "rose" literally referred to the appearance
of the face when broken out with Erysipelas facialis. The face is completely
roseate in color with open lesions from the strep infection, which was very
often terminal. As one source stated "Once one has seen the roseate face,
one would never forget the likeness to a deep red, rose color." Further
research has finally determined that the word "rose" in Agne Huch's entry
must have been a reference to "Rosej", the "old german" language medical
term for Erysipelas which is no longer in use.
Johann Christof Huch died at Kings County Hospital on 13 March 1903 and
is buried at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, 675 Central Avenue, Brooklyn NY
Block 35, Row 8, graves 26 & 27, as "Gustave" Huch with his wife Agnes
(Diedrich) Huch, their daughter Elfrieda (Huch) Wallner and two of
Elfrieda's children, Joseph and Elsa Wallner, along with Johann Christof and
Agnes (Diedrich) Huch's grand daughter, Margarethe Caroline Leopold. The
Eickhorn funeral home who handled the arrangements is no longer in
existance.
Johann Christof Huch's death certificate lists his name as "Gustave" and
the Most Holy Trinity Cemetery also records his burial as "Gustav". In
German, the letters CH and G are interchangeable, due to the similar
sounding pronunciations. Likewise, the letters F and V are also
interchangeable, so with these substitutions of letters, it would explain
how "Christof" became "Gustave" in these records.

Agnes Diedrich Huch
Agnes (Diedrich) Huch was a midwife, and was licensed by the State of New
York, Department of Health, Albany NY, Division of Maternity, Infancy and
Child Hygiene. At the time of Agne's death, they issued a Certificate of
Merit in memory of her work, which included her 1934 license, her
photographs and a notation that she was still licensed at the time of her
death and in good standing with the Dept. This information was found in a
letter from the State of NY Dept of Health dated 20 April 1934 to Agne's
daughter Hildegard (Wallner) Joseph, although the actual certificate has
never been located. A letter sent 14 June 1996 to this agency regarding this
Certificate of Merit was answered by The State Education Department, Albany
NY, who currently regulates the midwifery profession. Their reply was that
they did not have any records regarding midwifery practice for the period of
time in question, and they have no idea what happened to the records from
that time.
After the time of her husband, Johann Christof Huch's, death, Agnes can
be found listed as a "nurse" in the 1905, 1909, 1910 and 1913 Upington's
General Directory for Brooklyn NY, living at 320 Bleecker Street. She is
also listed in the 1933-34 Polks Directory as a "midwife", living at 74
261st Street, Floral Park NY. A letter from the Greater Ridgewood Historial
Society, 1820 Flushing Avenue, Queens NY indicates that the 1899 and 1900
Brooklyn Directories have no Huch entries. It has been speculated that the
family had returned to Hannover for a visit during this period of time. (See

Josef Wallner in St Joseph's Church of
Yorkville, 404 East 87th Street, New York NY. This church was contacted for
records of the Huch family, and the only records they had was that of the
marriage of Elfrieda, and the baptism of Elfrieda's daughter
Hildegard
Elizabeth. Elfrieda's son, Albert Joseph Wallner, was baptised at the Church
of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 259 North Fifth Street,
Brooklyn, NY, and this church was also contacted regarding Huch family
records. They only record they had was that of Albert J. Wallner's baptism.
To date the Huch family church has not been located.
The oral tradition of the family is that Agnes delivered her daughter,
Elfrieda (Huch) Wallner's son, Albert Joseph Wallner, although that fact is
not indicated on his birth certificate and the name of another midwife
appears on this record. She was the sponsor for her grandson, Albert Joseph
Wallner at his baptism, and also the sponsor for her daughter Elfrieda's
first child, daughter Hildegard Wallner's baptism. .
Another oral tradition is that Agnes was the youngest of 8 children. To
date the names of her siblings have not been located.
Agnes "adopted" Arthur Paul Beck, who the family called "Uncle Arthur",
although it is uncertain if this was a legal adoption.

Diedrich's marriage in Hannover Germany, and also the births, baptisms and
the deaths of four of their five children. Their children's entries are
written in german by Agnes, the appropriate births and baptisms registered
by the Katholische Parish Standesamt D. Kon. Residenzstadt Hannover.

Daughter Margarethe Agnes Johanne Christine Katherine, known as
"Margarethe", was born 3 November 1889 in Hannover, and baptised 19 November
1889 in Hannover. There is no entry under the remarks regarding her death,
so it is assumed that Margarethe survived her mother.
Daughter Elizabeth Huch, "Else", was born 22 March 1885 in New York, and
no notation appears for her baptism. The entry for her death, translated
from the german reads: Died in Hannover on 25 December 1889 Strangvieder
Church Grave 3699.
Daughter Bertha Johanne Katharina, known as "Bertha" was born 5 July 1887
in New York and there is no notation for a baptism. The entry for Bertha's
death, translated reads: Died on 26 May 1888 Buried Lutheran Cemetery Grave

Agnes also made entries for the births of her daughter Elfrieda's
children, Hildegard Elizabeth Wallner 9 October 1898 in New York City, and
Albert Joseph Louis Christopher Wallner 16 February 1901, along with two
other children that died at birth, Joseph 23 November 1903, and Elsa 7 May
1907. And another entry then appears regarding Elfrieda's death: Born 19
February 1878, Died May 16, 1907 Wed. 12:30 pm 7 days after stillborn birth.

days old and was interred on 21 November 1913, in the same grave at Most
Holy Trinity Church where Agnes (Diedrich) Huch would be interred 21 years
later.
Agnes (Diedrich) Huch died on 12 April 1934 at 3:12 pm at the home of her
grand daughter Hildegard (Wallner) Joseph at 481 Archer Street, Freeport,
Long Island (Nassau Co.) NY. Arrangements were handled by Chester Fulton &
Sons, 49 West Merrick Road, Freeport NY, and the church services were at the
Holy Redeemer Church in Freeport Long Island. She was interred in the Most
Holy Trinity Cemetery, 675 Central Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, Block 35, Row
8, Graves 26 & 27 with her husband Johann Christoff Huch (who is recorded in
these records as "Gustave" Huch), their daughter Elfrieda (Huch) Wallner and
two of her children, Joseph and Elsa Wallner, and Agne's grand daughter

Katherine Christine Elsbeth Elfriede was known as "Elfriede" or
"Elfrieda". The Katherine in her name is probably for Katherine Englehardt,
her maternal grandmother, and the Christine is probably for her paternal
grandmother, Christine Madeheim. The Huch family followed one of the many
traditional german Roman Catholic naming patterns, giving their oldest
daughter the names of both the wife's mother and the father's mother, which
were also always the names of saints. It is unknown who Elsbeth was, and may
be an abbreviated form of the name Elisabeth which appears in the Stammbuch
of Johann Christof Huch 1889 in which the records of the full names of his
children are recorded.
Elfrieda was born in Hannover Prussia, her birth is recorded in the
Stammbuch of her father, Johann Christof Huch of NY 1889, as #662 in the
birth register of K. Pr. Standesamt D. Kon. Residenzstadt in Hannover. On
the June 1900 Federal Census in the Borough of Brooklyn, Kings Co, NY, where
Elfrieda is living at 347 Grove Street with her husband, Josef Wallner and
daughter Hildegard Elizabeth, it states that Elfrieda immigrated to the U.S.
in the year 1880. She would have been approximately two years old at that
time. To date, no record can be located to verify this immigration date.
There is a record however, of her arrival in New York on 23 February 1883
from Bremen-Southampton aboard the ship "Werra" with her mother Agnes
(Diedrich) Huch and her two year old brother Alexander. She is listed as
three years old on the ships record, but would actually have been five years
old. Her father, Johann Christof Huch, does not appear on this passenger
list.
Whether this trip was the return from one of several her family made back
to Hannover, or if this is the arrival of the Huch family for the first time
in the U.S. and an error made regarding her father's record, to date has not
been determined. The oral tradition of the family is that Elfrieda
immigrated when she was 2 years old, which may point to the validity of the
1880 date recorded on the 1900 census record.
The Huch family made one or more trips to Hannover while Elfrieda was
young. Her family's travels, and the dates they were either in New York or
Hannover can be documented by the births, and tragically by the deaths of
three of Elfrieda's four siblings. About five months after the voyage aboard
the "Werra", in 1883, Elfrieda's younger brother Alexander died on 12 July
in New York at age 2 years and 11 months. Then on 26 May 1888, her 11 month
old sister Bertha died, also in New York. On a trip to Hannover in 1889 for
the holiday season, her sister Elisabeth died on Christmas Day. As no record
can be located for her parents on the 1900 Federal Census, it is possible
that they also returned again to Hannover during this period after
Elfrieda's marriage.

On 17 April 1898, Elfrieda married Josef Louis Wallner, son of Josef
Wallner and Elisabeth Brunner at St. Joseph's Church of Yorkville, 404 E.
87th Street in New York City, NY. The marriage was performed by A. Lammel, a
Catholic priest. Her marriage certificate #6172 from the State of NY, City
of NY, Borough of Manhattan, indicates that the witnesses to the marriage
were Louis Wallner, brother of the groom, and Erna Schlanberger. Elfrieda's
residence before her marriage is listed as 299 E. 88th Street in New York
City.
Elfrieda's husband, Josef Wallner, was naturalized eight months later, in
December of 1898, and his naturalization at that time also made Elfrieda a
citizen. Between 1855 and the Cable Act of 1922, a woman automaticallly
became a citizen by the naturalization of her husband.
On the record of Elfrieda and Josef's first child, Hildegard Elizabeth's,
baptism in 1898, also at St. Joseph's church of Yorkville, their address is
listed as 229 E. 88th Street in New York City. It is not known if either
this address, or the similar address where Elfrieda was living before her
marriage, is an error, and are actually the same address; or if these are
two different residences on E. 88th Street. It is likely that they are the
same address and that it is the residence of Elfrieda's parents, with whom
they may have lived after their marriage.
At the time of the 1900 Federal Cenus, Elfrieda is living with her
husband and daughter at the 347 Grove Street, Brooklyn NY address. The
census record indicates this residence was rented.
In 1901, at the time of the birth of their son, Albert Joseph
Christopher, they are living at 345 South First Street in New York City,
near the Zoeller family. Joseph Zoeller had witnessed Josef Wallner's
naturalization application a few years earlier and was related to the
Wallners through the sisters of Elisabeth Brunner, Josef Wallner's mother.
Elfrieda's mother, Agnes (Diedrich) Huch, was a midwife, and may have
delivered Elfrieda's children. The certificate of Albert's birth, #3497,
indicates that Elfrieda had given birth to two children and that both were
living. Albert was baptised at the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, 259 N. 5th Street in Brooklyn NY.
In 1903, another son, Joseph, was born on 23 November and died two days
later on 25 November. He was buried at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, 675
Central Avenue, Brooklyn NY with his grandfather, Johann Christof Huch, who
had died eight months earlier.
The family was living at 209 Onderdonk Avenue, Ridgewood, Queens Co., New
York in 1905, when Josef Wallner was a witness to his brother Louis's
naturalization. Elfrieda's husband's occupation during all of these years is
recorded consistently as blacksmith.
The Stammbuch of Johann Christof Huch records the birth and death of
Elfrieda and Josef's daughter Elsa on 7 May 1907. Elsa was buried with her
brother Joseph, and grandfather, Johann Christof Huch in Most Holy Trinity
Cemetery in Brooklyn. The cemetery's records incorrectly list her as
"Joseph" and may have used her father's name for their record, but the 10
May 1907 date of interment indicates that this is where Elsa is buried.
Six days after Elsa's burial, Elfrieda died. Her mother, Agnes (Diedrich)
Huch, recorded her daughter's death in german in the
Stammbuch: "Gestorben am 16 Mai 1907 Mittags 11:30 Begrabnis au 18
Mai Begraben bei ihr Vater Christof Huch in H. Dreieinigkeit H. Trinite
Kirchoff." (Died on 16 May 1907 Midday 11:30 Burial on 18 May near her
father Christoff Huch in Holy Cemetery Holy Trinity Church.) Another entry
also appears later on in the book, written in English, so perhaps the entry
was made by Elfrieda's daughter Hildegard years later after her grandmother
died: "Elfrieda Huch Wallner Born Feb 19, 1878 Died May 16 1907 Wed. 12:30
pm 7 days after stillborn birth. Blood poisoning/circulation."
Elfrieda (Huch) Wallner was 29 years old at the time of her death, dying
9 days after her daughter Elsa. She was interred on 18 May 1907 in the Most
Holy Trinity Cemetery, 675 Central Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. (The cemetery and
their records are now under the care of Catholic Cemeteries located in
Middle Village NY.) John J. Gallagher handled the arrangements, and his
funeral home is no longer in existance. Her grave is located in Block 35,
Row 8, graves 26 & 27, where she was buried with her father, Johann Christof
Huch, son Joseph, and daughter Elsa.
