The first farmers, the first pioneers were usually the ones who had communities or streets named after them. We know that Gallatin was named for the noted statesman, Albert Gallatin, Rogana for the rugged Irishman Hugh Rogan. Some, however, have a story behind them. How did they come up with these unusual town names?


 

The conversation would start innocently enough between two people... a memory might fail, supposition would substitute for fact, and the story would be re-told. Behold! the birth of folklore. Like all other communities small and large, her less prideful tales were repeated in hushed tones that met with downcast eyes. What's left is a mix of fact and doubt. Perhaps some grain of truth can be found here, in Sumner County's folklore.
