1. Arthur Allston Wells- born- Sept.20,1786 died- Jan.20,1824 2.Benjamin Wells- born Aug.28,1789 died Feb.28,1790- 6 months
He on 17 Feb 1824 in Delaware Gazette, February 17, 1824. NewsPaper Orbit "It is our painful task to record the death of Capt. Arthur A. Wells of the
packet sloop Fame. On yesterday afternoon, while beating up the creek against strong head wind, he received a violent blow on the head from the jib-sheet block, which knocked him overboard, and before he could be taken up, had expired. - He has left an interesting family and numerous friends to lament his unhappy fate.
From the Delaware Gazette, February 17, 1824
.We have waited with unusual solicitude, for one of the many friends of Arthur Wells, late Captain of the sloop Fame, Packet, of Wilmington, to notice his melancholy end, and eulogize his worth, but the feelings of regret, at his sudden, accidental, and lamented death, have been so general, that no individual it seems, thought it necessary as yet to notice it with the solemnity and respect it merits.
Yet to his absent and distant friends it may not be unnecessary to state that he commanded and partly owned a favorite and useful packet that sailed between Wilmington and Philadelphia called the Fame, that he was ambitious of Fame, and in truth ambitious to accommodate the public and his passengers; -that in unison with those feelings on Wednesday, in unison with these feelings, and to sustain his character for activity and enterpris- he perished by his endeavors to render his passengers and vessel secure, in a heavy squall, while every moment he anticipated the pleasure of domestic comforts, but
--"Death a necessary end Will come when it will come."
And in this instance as in others, it came most fatally and unexpectedly. Capt. Wells had ceased running the packet for the winter, but the weather being unusally moderate, he concluded to take another trip -and fatal was the conclusion, for on his return in nearing his house and family in Wilmington, and within the view of numerous friends on the public warf, a N. W. wind struck his vessel aback - when anxiouis to preserve his passengers, he sprung forward to haul in the jib sheet, when one of the blocks stuck his head, and the lamp of life being extinguished, he fell overboard - and his cloathing not being soon saturated, floated on the surface of the water, almost a living corpse.
Oh how truly was, in this melancholy case the Scriptural expressoin verified -"In the midst of life we are in death." He was taken up as quick as possible -delivered to his bereaved, distracted family, and every means resorted to by the most intelligent physicians of Wilmington to restore him, but ineffectually - vitality and animation were forever flown. His funeral was attended by his distressed relatives and friends -by his masonic brethren, and many hundred citizens.
"And thus left all that cheers and softens life, His dearest children, friends and wife."
On this mournful occasion, we cannot but reflect that we come into this world.without our own consent. In infancy we suffer, we suffer in childhood, in boyhood, in manhood, and in endeavoring to support those that nature places in our charge, by sweat of our brows, we often lose the life the Almighty gave us. But a merciful God will surely reward the just and upright one of whom we truly believe Capt Wells to have been. He was an affectionate husband -good father -kind friend -an active, honest and industrious citizen; and one of the
most obliging and attentive Captains that ever sailed out of any port -liberal in his opinions, but just in his dealings.
His faith perhaps in some nice tenents might Be deemed too free -his life was in the right.
THE COMMUNITY.
