Cousin Glady Geist wrote: There were three Williams in the Randall family in the Durand, Winnebago, IL area. William I was know as as Squire because he had studied law a a young man and acted as a lawyer for the area. He had William known as Billy and Henry had a son William known as Will. Henry and son Will were the Randalls with wealth. They were horse traders.

cousin Gladys Geist wrote: Fred Davis did a great deal of traveling by train, he claimed he worked for the railrod. He visited at our home about every two or three years. He was excellent at singing Irish songs. We never knew what happened to him but all of a sudden he stopped visiting us. Squire (Glady's grandfather) owned a race track on the northwest 40 of what is now the A. Laube farm. (east of Roland Hamer's home). Was a supervisor at one time. He bought furs on the Hudson, was about to be attacked by would be assians but saw a movement in time to strike a blow himself. Did not know what happened to the assians. His brother, John settled in Brodhead, Freemont in Roscoe. visited a mormon meeting, Minister was hit in mouth by a stone. Granfather William blamed, had to fight his way out of the meeting. William was a big man, 6 feet 4 inchs tall, weighed from 250 to 300 lbs. Filled a buggy to capacity, always gave kids peaches "big ones" instead of candy. Grandfather and Dad (Bert) defended and opposed on the case of S. Barker, who struck a woman with a stick of wood. Barker was made to pay the Dr.'s bill.

Jocye Keay Lundin family group records: Henry as he was called shipped horses to Atlanta, GA and St. Louis, MO and as far as Fitchburg and Boston, MA and north to the Canadian border. The western market was San Francisco where his partner was no less personage than the husband of "Lady Washburne", (a Republican Representative from Ill.) Henry was an excellent businessman and truly a great man. All who worked for him said he was as good man to work for as ever need be. Henry was the oldest of William "Spuire" Randall's children. Henry was 8 years old when the family came to Laona in 1838. He rode a pony most of the way. He was energetic and did much in opening up and making this country what it is. In 1861 he went to the Pacific coast with 57 horses with G.J. Thorne and W.H.H. Thorne of Durand helping. They only lost three horses. In 1863 he set out with 100 horses and right after this the Central and Union and Pacific Railroad was built, and he had the distinction of sending the first horses on this railroad. He brought $10,000 worth of gold back with him which he hid in his trunks, valises and pockets of his clothing.

In Memorial read at funeral of William H. Randall
Washington Irving says. "There is a remembrance of the dead to which we turn even from the charms of the living; this we would not exchange for the burst of revelry, or the songs of pleasure." In this thought we come to view the record of one whose life was lived among his boyhood chums and acquaintances, with an openness and fearlessness, betokening strong manhood. Just as the sunset glow makes golden the closing day, so death gilds and opens to freshness and beauty the kindly deeds of one loved and cherished by his fellows.
William H. Randall, son of Henry J. and Calista C. Randall was born in Pecatonica, IL, Oct. 24, 1855 and passed away at his home in Durand, IL Jan. 24, 1921, aged 65 yrs and 3 mths.
His early life was spent on a farm and his education obtained in the schools of Durand and Rockford, IL. In early manhood he became interested in buying and selling horses and in 1875 he formed a partnership with Herbert L. Norton, now deceased, and for several years they made their headquarters in Pembina, ND, during which time the firm purchased a third interest in the town-site of Hamilton, ND, to which place they moved and aided materially in its upbuilding. They were also interested in farm lands and came into possession of large tracts throughout ND, and continued their business at the above named place until 1891, when Mr. Randall with his family returned to Durand where he has since continuously resided. He was united in marriage Feb. 9, 1887 to Miss. Mary Allen, daughter of the late Judge Allen of Sterling, Il, and to their union one son, Edgar A. was born. to this little family a big book of love had closed. To eulogize Will Randall in his own community is unnecessary. He loved his friends and never forgot them. they know his virtues. In social circles he was a 32d degree Mason, a member of the Freeport Commandery K.T. and of Tebala Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. also a member of Rockford Lodge B.P.O. Elks and Unity Club of Durand. As a citizen he was public-spirited, ever ready and willing to assist in any movement looking to the benefit and uplift of the community. In business he was associated with the Citizens State Bank of Durand, IL... serving as Vice President from its organization. Besides his large farm north of town, in which he took so much interest and pride, he had land interests in other states. He was a man whose sagacity in business, far seeing and prudent management, charity, benevolence and hospitality made him known to a large circle of prominent men. He inherited the keen insight of his father, whose business acumen fell as a mantel to this worthy son. By his passing he leaves to mourn, a devoted and loving wife, his only son Edgar and wife and their little Karian (who was her grandfather's idol) a large circle of relatives and a host of friends, all of who will proclaim, "The good he did lives after him." The funeral services were held at the Durand M.E. church on Saturday, January 29, at 2 p.m. Rev. Charles A. Gage, a former pastor and intimate friend conducted the obsequies. Interment was made at Durand Cemetery.

Joyce Keay Lundin had the following:
Park River Herald, 10 Oct 1918:
Another Park River boy has succumbed to the ravages of the Spanish Influenza and the accompanying pneumonia. Robert W. Bates, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bates of this city, died Tuesday at Camp Custer. He was taken sick last week but the case was first reported as a slight attack. On Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock Mr. Bates received a telegram that the boy was critically ill with pneumonia and 2 hours later another telegram was received that he was dead. The body is being prepared for burial and will be shipped to Park River and will arrive on Friday's train. On account of the epidemic now going on there will be no inside service but short services will be held at the grave in the Memorial Cemetery at two o'clock. Robert Bates was born at Park River on Dec 14. 1900 and had attended public schools here. He would be eighteen years old next December had he lived. But though underage, he was eager to enlist in the US Army service and after a great deal of pleading, his parents consented to let him go. Gladys Geist searched for Edward and learned this information for a neigbor of Edwards', Mrs. Bill Kiser :
We received your most welcome letter concerning Ed. Robbins. Unfortunately, Ed died 10 Oct 1967 of cancer. He was single. He died on a ranch joining ours and was like a father to my husband and his brother. Mr. Kiser the boys father died in 1948, the boys were small and Ed lived right next door. Naturally, Mrs. Kiser remarried , but the boys still had a fatherly attachment for Ed. He guided the boys, played with them, babysat, etc. so for 20 years he was their "father". I met Ed in 1960 when Bill and I got married. We took him to town for groceries, etc., had him to dinner many times. We wanted him to live with us, but he was a very independent man, had his own cabin, dogs, cats, horses and cows. He was happy at his house. He was in the hospital about 2 weeks before he died. If at any time you folks are in Montana, we would love to have you stop for a visit.

They attended grade and high school there and upon graduation went to the Univ of No. Dakota for their college training. All four were members of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Henry Lockwood sold five acres off the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 in 1855. He sold to John Weber. John Weber sold the five acres to Tostrn Stabeck in 1885. Tostrn Staback sold to H.S. Randall 25 June 1900 for $200.00. This five acres is where the wooded area is and where Roy Geist built a new home.

I know he guided me in my habits and thinking and always for the better. He taught us to keep our teeth and bodies clean, and how to be kind to wildlife. He farmed, but I know he really enjoyed dealing more than farming. He bought and sold Army gooods, farm machinery, etc. He wa interested in raising quality chickens and pigs. He owned his own farm and was Laona township's and also County Road Commissioner for years. Was Laona's Republican Committeeman for many years. Loved the Yankee baseball club.
